  • This paper presents a method of topological modeling using only low-cost sonar sensors. The proposed method constructs a topological model by extracting sub-regions from the local grid map. The extracted sub-regions are considered as nodes in the topological model, and the corresponding edges are generated according to the connectivity between two sub-regions. A grid confidence for each occupied grid is evaluated to obtain reliable regions in the local grid map by filtering out noisy data. Moreover, a convexity measure is used to extract sub-regions automatically. Through these processes, the topological model is constructed without predefining the number of sub-regions in advance and the proposed method guarantees the convexity of extracted sub-regions. Unlike previous topological modeling methods which are appropriate to the corridor-like environment, the proposed method can give a reliable topological modeling in a home environment even under the noisy sonar data. The performance of the proposed method is verified by experimental results in a real home environment.

  • During X-ray examinations in the DR system, the scattered X-rays physically generated by the patient cause image blurring in poor quality. Although X-rays to increase the contrast of images, this increases the patient's exposure dose and is likely to result in grid induced artifacts. Therefore, the purpose of this study is obtain images similar to those of real-grid with non-grid level conditions using a VGR (Virtual Grid Role) algorithm that serves as a virtual grid. Comparing MTF, SNR and CNR of non-grid and VGR algorithm images obtained with 70% exposure conditions of real-grid images showed that the MTF0.5 differed from 0.265 to 0.350 and the MTF0.1 from 0.412 to 0.467 and the SNR, CNR were also different. In addition, comparing MTF, SNR and CNR of VGR algorithm and real-grid images showed that the MTF0.5 differed from 0.350 to 0.367 and the MTF0.1 from 0.467 to 0.483 and the SNR, CNR by little.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the validity of the dynamic sub-grid G-equation model to a complex turbulent premixed combustion such as bluff body stabilized turbulent premixed flames for the considering of the realistic engineering application. In this study, a new turbulent flame speed model, introduced by the sub-grid turbulent diffusivity and the flame thickness, is also proposed and is compared with an usual model using sub-grid turbulent intensity and with the experimental data. The calculated results can predict the velocity and temperature of the combustion flow in good agreement with the experiment data.

  • The sub-salt imaging technique becomes more crucial to detect the hydro-carbonates in petroleum exploration as the target reservoirs get deeper. However, the weak reflections from the sub-salt structures prevent us from obtaining high fidelity sub-salt image. As an effort to overcome this difficulty, we applied the waveform inversion by implementing multi-grid technique to the sub-salt imaging. Through the comparison between the conventional waveform inversion using fixed grid and the multi-grid technique, we confirmed that the waveform inversion using multi-grid technique has advantages over the conventional fixed grid waveform inversion. We showed that the multi-grid technique can complement he velocity estimation result of the waveform inversion for imaging the sub-salt structures, of which velocity model cannot be obtained correctly by the conventional fixed grid waveform inversion.

  • In this paper, we propose a volume rendering method using grid computing for large-scale volume data. Grid computing is attractive because medical institutions and research facilities often have a large number of idle computers. A large-scale volume data is divided into sub-volumes and the sub-volumes are rendered using grid computing. When using grid computing, different computers rarely have the same processor speeds. Thus the return order of results rarely matches the sending order. However order is vital when combining results to create a final image. Job-Scheduling is important in grid computing for volume rendering, so we use an obstacle-flag which changes priorities dynamically to manage sub-volume results. Obstacle-Flags manage visibility of each sub-volume when line of sight from the view point is obscured by other subvolumes. The proposed Dynamic Job-Scheduling based on visibility substantially increases efficiency. Our Dynamic Job-Scheduling method was implemented on our university's campus grid and we conducted comparative experiments, which showed that the proposed method provides significant improvements in efficiency for large-scale volume rendering.

  • A sub-munition which has low aspect ratio does not have flight stability and control of drag force under free-fall condition. In order to satisfy those problems, fin, which is called grid-fin, is designed instead of conventional flight fins and adapted to the sub-munition. The base model of the sub-munition is firstly set and numerical simulation of the model is conducted under transonic condition that is free-fall range of the sub-munition. Wind test is secondly performed to verify the simulation result. The result shows that grid fin adapted sub-munition has high drag force, but the flight stability is still needed. In order to enhance the flight stability, two additional grid-fins are designed which modify web-thickness and numerical simulations of modified models are conducted. As the results, the thinnest web-thickness grid-fin has the highest flight stability and still maintains high drag coefficient. Based on these results, design of grid-fin adapted sub-munition is completed, the path trajectory of the sub-munition can be predicted with acquired aerodynamic datum and it is expected that grid fin can be used to various shape of the flight vehicle and bomb.

  • The objective of this study is to develop a two-dimensional (2D) flood model that can perform accurate flood analysis with simple input data. The 2D flood inundation models currently used to create flood forecast maps require complex input data and grid generation tools. This sometimes requires a lot of time and effort for flood modeling, and there may be difficulties in constructing input data depending on the situation. In order to compensate for these shortcomings, in this study, a grid-based model that can derive accurate and rapid flood analysis by reflecting correct topography as simple input data was developed. The calculation efficiency was improved by extending the existing 2×2 sub-grid model to a 5×5. In order to examine the accuracy and applicability of the model, it was applied to the Gamcheon Basin where both urban and river flooding occurred due to Typhoon Rusa. For efficient flood analysis according to user's selection, flood wave propagation patterns, accuracy and execution time according to grid size and number of sub-grids were investigated. The developed model is expected to be highly useful for flood disaster mapping as it can present the results of flooding analysis for various situations, from the flood inundation map showing accurate flooding to the flood risk map showing only approximate flooding.

  • It is common practice to identify the insulation faults of GIS through monitor the contents of SF6 decomposed components. Partial discharges (PD) could lead to the decomposition of SF6 dielectric, so new reactions usually occur in the mixture of the newly decomposed components including traces of H2O and O2. The new reactions also cause the decomposed components to differ due to the different amounts of H2O and O2 even under the same strength of PD. Thus, the accuracy of assessing the insulation faults is definitely influenced when using the concentration and corresponding change of decomposed components. In the present research, a needle-plate electrode was employed to simulate the PD event of a metal protrusion insulation fault for two main characteristic components SO2F2 and SOF2, and to carry out influence analysis of trace H2O and O2 on the characteristic components. The research shows that trace H2O has the capability of catching an F atom, which inhibits low-sulfide SFx from recombining into high-sulfide SF6. Thus, the amount of SOF2 strongly correlates to the amount of trace H2O, whereas the amount of SO2F2 is weakly related to trace H2O. Furthermore, the dilution effect of trace O2 on SOF2 obviously exceeds that of SO2F2.
