This study aimed at identifying the differences between gifted students and general students in parental attitude toward science and trust perceived by them and their science self-efficacy. To achieve this purpose, a quantitative research was carried out for elementary gifted and general students. The results were as follows. Firstly, Gifted students recognized more positively their parents' attitude toward science than general students, and both of groups perceived more positively their mothers' than fathers'. Secondly, Parents' trust by gifted students was perceived more positively than by general students, but showed no difference between fathers and mothers. Thirdly, The average of science self-efficacy for gifted students was statistically meaningfully higher than for general students.
The current study examined college students' overall eating behavior and physical activity, highlighting differences between male and female students attending a public university in the southwestern United States. Research findings indicated that many college students did not eat enough fruits, fruit juices, and green salad. Furthermore, the results of Chi-square analysis showed that there were significant differences in consumption amounts of green salad, hamburgers/hot dogs/sausage, and French fries/potato chips between male and female students. Study findings showed that when students were asked about attributes of food/restaurant choice, female students were more concerned about nutritional aspects when they chose the foods compared with male students. In terms of physical activity levels among college students, male students were more likely to participate in sports activities and weight training. On the other hand, female students were more inclined to walking or bicycling.
This study investigated the impact of parents' marital conflict and adult attachment on ego-resiliency among college students. The participants were three hundred sixty six undergraduate students (118 men and 248 women) enrolled in a university in Gyeongbuk Province. Survey questionnaires were used to measure parents' marital conflict perceived by the students, adult attachment, and ego-resiliency. Data were analyzed by means, standard deviations, t-tests, one-way ANOVA, Scheffe test, correlation, and multiple regressions. Results are summarized in the following: (1) Male students' ego-resiliency level was higher than lunate students'. (2) Students' ego-resiliency was higher in the group whose parents remained married than in the group whose parents did not. (3) The level of parents' marital conflict perceived by students was negatively correlated with their ego-resiliency. The level of adult attachment was positively correlated with students' ego-resiliency. (4) Regression analysis showed that adult attachment was more influential on college students' ego-resiliency than parents' marital conflict as perceived by the students.
The purpose of this study was to compare the Korean and Chinese university students' materialism and clothing attitudes. Self-administered questionnaires developed by researcher were used and the research periods were from Feb. 20 to Mar. 19, 2003. 429 Korean and 405 Chinese students's data was used for analysis. Cluster analysis, one-way ANOVA, t-test, and discriminant analysis were done. Korean students pursuited happiness more than utility and accomplishment, but Chinese students pursuited accomplishment more than happiness and practicality. The students were divided into the happiness pursuit, the utility pursuit, and the accomplishment pursuit. The group size of the utility pursuit and the happiness pursuit among Korean students and the utility pursuit and the accomplishment pursuit among Chinese students were larger. Korean students preferred fashionability, psychological dependence, sexual attraction of clothing more, but Chinese preferred conformity more. Utility and accomplishment of materialism, and fashionability and conformity of clothing were strong variables which discriminated Korean students from Chinese students, and total discriminating power was 77.1%.
The purposes of this study were to examine the relationship between brand sensitivity and public self-consciousness, and the effects of gender and age on brand sensitivity and public self-consciousness. The subject used for this study were three hundred and thirty-five college students (118 male students and 217 female students). For data analysis, descriptive statistics, Cronbach's alpha, multiple regression, and t-test were used. As the results, first, there were the significant differences between male students and female students on brand sensitivity and public self-consciousness. Female students had higher scores on brand sensitivity and public self-consciousness than male students as expected. Second, there were the significant differences between younger college students and older college students on brand sensitivity and public self-consciousness. Older college students had higher scores on brand sensitivity and public self-consciousness than younger college students. Finally, public self-consciousness influenced on brand sensitivity the most significantly, followed by age variable. Based on these results, brand management marketing strategy of fashion products would be provided.
The main purpose of this study is to provide a basic knowledge of Kimchi preferred by high school students and to improve high school students' Kimchi intake. A questionnaire survey was conducted on 1,056 high school students in Taegu area. The results were as follows: 82% of the students had an affirmative opinion of Kimchi intake and they regarded Kimchi as one of our traditional, healthful and nutritious foods. The most well known Kimchi is as follows: Kkaktugi, Baechu Kimchi, Mul Kimchi, Chonggak Kimchi, Pa Kimchi, Dongchimi, Kkaennip Kimchi and Buchu Kimchi. The students preferred the white stems of the Chinese cabbage. Boy students preferred taste of fresh prepared Kimchi but girl students more preferred properly fermented Kimchi than the other. Their favorite ingredients were Korean radishes, oysters, green onion and carrots, also their favorite spices were red pepper powder, anchovies sauce, garlic and sugar in the order. Among those spices, boy students more preferred anchovies sauce than girl students. The students regarded market Kimchi as one of convenient and time-saving, but less quality and insanitary foods.
This study was performed to compare the anthropometric and the food and nutrient intake of the adolescents between urban areas and islands in south Kyungnam and to identify their nutritional problems. A questionnaire survey was distributed among 383 middle school students for the food and nutrient consumption and other nutritional attitudes including socioecomonic status. The height and weight of the students were measured as well. Socioeconomic status, such as income, educational level, and jobs of the urban students parents was better than that of the island students. There was no significant difference in height between the students of both areas, but the body weight of the urban male students was far heavier than that of the other group. It is very interesting to note that the energy intake of the urban male students was much lower than that of the island male students. The students of the two areas consumed more protein, Vit B$_1$, Vit B$_2$, niacin and Vit C than the recommended daily allowances(RDA) but the intake of Ca, Fe, Vit A was less. As to the sources of animal fat, the urban males consumed much more. Regarding the taste preference, the study shows that urban male students are more likely to choose sweet, salty and soft tastes than island male students. In the case of female students, although island students prefer a rather hot taste, urban students are more likely to prefer sweet and soft tastes. The favorite foods of urban students are meat products, fastfoods, chocolate, cheese and milkshakes, while foods like cooked rice with assorted vegetable are the favorite of the island students. In general, the preference degree for meat products and fruits rates higher than for vegetables. Conclusively the urban students had a tendency of being obese and the intake of all nutrients by the urban adolescents was much lower than that of the islanders. In this study, the cause can be found in significant differences in consuming animal fat, of taste preference and of choosing favorite food. Accordingly a nutritional intervention or educational program is required to adjust the imbalanced intake of some nutrients for the adolescents in this province.
This study was performed to investigate the nutrition knowledge, attitudes, and dietary habits of physical education (PE) major and non-majors of male college students. The subjects were 253 students residing in Gyeonggi area. Nutrition knowledge scores of PE major students were lower than that of non-major students. Both PE major and non-major students reported TV, radio, and internet as their primary sources of nutrition information. Overall dietary attitude scores of two groups did not differ significantly, but PE major students showed more positive attitudes than non-major students for 'Enjoy eating foods that are good for health'. PE major students took more number of meals a day and took more irregularly than non-major students. Also they used more nutrient supplements than non-major students. PE major students drank more amounts of alcohol and drank more frequently than non-major students. But the smoking status of the two groups was not significantly different. PE major students scored higher than non-major students in dietary habits on balance of meals in spite of their low nutrition knowledge scores. How would environmental education be implemented for effectiveness today? Deep reflection on the way of teaching environment in classes to achieve effectiveness is required. If there exist differences in students' environmental perception depending on environment class pattern, its most effective way should be looked for. In environmental education, inducing the students to have advisable attitude voluntary about environment is more important than teaching them environmental knowledge. From such view, students' active participation is necessary for successful environmental classes. Students need to be set to share their principle, values, attitude about environment problems at environmental class through presentation which is important factor to make them have advisable environmental attitude. Therefore, environmental class need to be carried out student-led way. For that, a class model need to be designed which will be helpful for the students to arrange and elaborate their emitting thought about environment problems through disclosing their thoughts to share them with fellow students which will end up in their advisable environmental attitude. This study aimed to find out the effectiveness of environmental collage making class contributive to offering various environmental perception to students and grasping others' thinking about environment. Fifty-eight 10th graders at U Science High School in Ulsan metropolitan city were selected for the study that carried out from 2010 April to June by choosing total 10 environmental themes divided into environmental collage making class applied to the 30 test group students, and general environmental class applied to 28 control group students. Following are the study results. First, in students' environmental sensitivity, the students in the environmental collage making class appeared to be higher compared with them in general environmental class. Second, in students' intentional environment action, the students in the environmental collage making class appeared to be higher compared with them in general environmental class. Third, in students' satisfaction with environmental class, the students in the environmental collage making class appeared to be higher compared with them in general environmental class.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the nutrient intake, eating behaviors and health-related lifestyles of Korean non-nutrition major college students after they took a nutrition course. The subjects were 40 male and 147 female students at a university in Inchon. The results are summarized as follows: Average height of male and female students was 176.2 and 162.0 cm, respectively. Average weight was 66.2 and 52.3 kg, respectively. Average intake of calories, protein, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin $B_1$, vitamin $B_2$, niacin, and Ca was lower than Korean RDA. Fe intake of female students was lower than Korean RDA. Most students have had dietary problems such as overeating, eating unbalanced meals, and skipping meals. More than 60% of the students skipped breakfast. The main reason for skipping meals was lack of time. Most students didnt exercise regularly. About 40% of the students took vitamin or mineral supplements. As for smoking and alcohol use, 11.3% of the students drank alcohol and smoked, and 74.2% of them only drank alcohol. More than 30% of the students drank alcohol once a week. Most students ate out twice a week, and chose their based on taste rather than nutritional value. The main reason for eating out was simply to enjoy a meal. More than 60% of the students ate at places in or around campus. After taking the nutrition course, intake of milk and other dairy products, vegetables, fruits and protein-rich foods increased in female students. For both male and female students, intake of fat, sugar, processed foods, soft drinks, fried foods and spices decreased. Therefore, nutrition education had effect on non-nutrition major students, suggesting that proper nutrition education encouraged healthy eating habits on the part of college students.
