Method: A descriptive-exploratory research design was employed. Two hundred and twenty-three patients with hypertension using W Public Health Center were randomly recruited on the basis of being over 30 of age. Upon the receipt of their written consents, direct interview with a structured questionnaire were conducted by a public health nurse. Descriptive statistics and $X^2-test$ were utilized. Results: Three subgroups were identified. Group I members had a low score on all three factors including knowledge, attitudes and behavior related to medication and health lifestyle. Group II members had a low score on one or two of the factors. Group III members had a high score on all three factors. The three subgroups were significantly associated with education level, economic status, non-smoking and non-drinking. Conclusions: Further research should be conducted to validate these findings and test tailored nursing intervention for patient compliance.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify motivational factors that may influence health behaviors of patients with coronary artery disease. Methods: Structured questionnaires were used with a convenience sample of 164 subjects who were discharged from the hospital. The subjects were recruited for an interview at outpatient clinic in hospitals. The tools for the study were the motivational factors and health behaviors measure for the Elderly with cardiovascular disease. The data were analyzed using frequency, t-test, ANOVA, sheffe, Pearson correlation coefficient and stepwise multiple regressions. Results: There were significant correlations between motivational factors and health behaviors, ranging from r=.192 to .692. Stepwise multiple regression analyses indicated that 51% of variance in health behaviors was explained by self-efficacy and perceived benefits among four motivational factors(F=34.988, p<.01). Self-efficacy contributed the greatest amount of variance in health behaviors(${\beta}=.467$), followed by perceived benefits(${\beta}=.235$). Conclusions: The results of the study indicate that motivation, especially self-efficacy, was very important in predicting health behaviors of patients with coronary artery disease. Thus it would be necessary to include motivational factors in designing rehabilitation program for people with coronary artery disease.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify risk factors of fall and to examine its results among patients aged 60 and over diagnosed with osteoporosis. Methods: A retrospective descriptive survey was conducted with 91 patients admitted in a university hospital in a city. Data were collected using an interview method with a structured questionnaire, and were analyzed using descriptive statistics and multiple logistic regression. Results: In patients with osteoporosis, the intrinsic risk factors of falls were aging (OR = 3.742), gait disturbance (OR = 12.565), taking one or fewer medicine (OR = 7.873), and having two or more diseases (OR = 5.173). The extrinsic risk factors included the use of a bed (OR = 3.093), slippery floors (OR = 12.130), bathroom mat without anti-slip rubber backing (OR = 3.564), and presence of a night light on the passage from the bedroom to the bathroom (OR = 2.980). Conclusion: For the elderly aged over 70 who are most vulnerable to falls, screening tests such as bone mineral density (BMD) should be conducted in health examinations and the risk of fracture caused by osteoporosis should be communicated to the vulnerable elderly. Besides, development of new exercise programs combining weightbearing exercise is needed to prevent bone loss and increase functional activities.
