This study focused on the effectiveness of seismic isolation technique in case of a reinforced concrete structure with soft story defined as the stiffness irregularity between adjacent stories. In this context, a seismically isolated 3-story reinforced concrete structure was analyzed by gradually increasing the first story height (3.0, 4.5, and 6.0 m). The seismic isolation system of the structure is assumed to be composed of lead rubber bearings (LRB). In the analyses, isolators were modeled by both deteriorating (temperature-dependent analyses) and non-deteriorating (bounding analyses) hysteretic representations. The deterioration in strength of isolator is due to temperature rise in the lead core during cyclic motion. The ground motion pairs used in bi-directional nonlinear dynamic analyses were selected and scaled according to codified procedures. In the analyses, different isolation periods (Tiso) and characteristic strength to weight ratios (Q/W) were considered in order to determine the sensitivity of structural response to the isolator properties. Response quantities under consideration are floor accelerations, and interstory drift ratios. Analyses results are compared for both hysteretic representations of LRBs. Results are also used to assess the significance of the ratio between the horizontal stiffnesses of soft story and isolation system. It is revealed that seismic isolation is a viable method to reduce structural damage in structures with soft story.
Soil structure plays an important role in ecological system, since it controls transport and storage of air, gas, nutrients and solutions. The study of soil structure requires an understanding of the interrelations and interactions between the diverse soil components at various levels of organization. Investigations of the spatial distribution of pore/particle arrangements and the geometry of soil pore space can provide important information regarding ecological or crop system. Because of conveniences in image analyses and accuracy, these investigations have been thrived for a long time. Image analyses from soil sections through impregnated blocks of undisturbed soil (2 dimensional image analyses) or from 3 dimensional scanned soils by computer tomography allow quantitative assessment of the pore space. Image analysis techniques can be used to classify pore types and quantify pore structure without inaccurate or hard labor in laboratory. In this paper, the last 50 years of the soil image analyses have been presented and measurements on various soil scales were introduced, as well. In addition to history of image analyses, a couple of examples for soil image analyses were displayed. The discussion was made on the applications of image analyses and techniques to quantify pore/soil structure.
The seismic isolation system makes a structure isolated from ground motions to protect the structure from seismic events. Seismic isolation techniques have been implemented in full-scale buildings and bridges because of their simplicity, economic effectiveness, inherent stability and reliability. As for the responses of an isolated structure due to seismic events, it is well known that the most uncertain aspects are the seismic loading itself and structural properties. Due to the randomness of earthquakes and uncertainty of structures, seismic response distributions of an isolated structure are needed when evaluating the seismic fragility assessment (or probabilistic seismic safety assessment) of an isolated structure. Seismic response time histories are useful and often essential elements in its design or evaluation stage. Thus, a large number of non-linear dynamic analyses should be performed to evaluate the seismic performance of an isolated structure. However, it is a monumental task to gather the design or evaluation information of the isolated structure from too many seismic analyses, which is impractical. In this paper, a new methodology that can evaluate the seismic fragility assessment of an isolated structure is proposed by using stochastic response database, which is a device that can estimate the seismic response distributions of an isolated structure without any seismic response analyses. The seismic fragility assessment of the isolated nuclear power plant is performed using the proposed methodology. The proposed methodology is able to evaluate the seismic performance of isolated structures effectively and reduce the computational efforts tremendously.

In this paper, we study the existing results of the structure-soil-structure interaction (SSSI) effect on seismic responses of structures and summarize important parameters. The parameters considered in this study are a combination of buildings in the power block of a nuclear power plant, the characteristics of earthquake ground motions and its direction, and the characteristics embedded under the ground. Based on these parameters, the seismic analysis model of the structures in the power block of the nuclear power plant is developed and the structure-soil-structure interaction analyses are performed to analyze the influence of the parameters on the seismic response. For all analyses, the soil-structure interaction (SSI) analysis program CNU-KIESSI, which was developed to enable large-sized seismic analysis, is used. In addition, the SSI analyses is performed on individual structures and the results are compared with the SSSI analysis results. Finally, the influence of the parameters on the seismic response of the structure due to the SSSI effect is reviewed through comparison of the analysis results.
This paper presents finite element (FE) based pushover analysis of a reinforced concrete structure with a two-leaf cavity wall (TLCW) to estimate the performance level of this structure. In addition to this, an unreinforced masonry (URM) model was selected for comparison. Simulations and analyses of these structures were performed using the DIANA FE program. The mentioned structures were selected as two storeys and two bays. The dimensions of the structures were scaled 1:1.5 according to the Cauchy Froude similitude law. A shake table experiment was implemented on the reinforced concrete structure with the two-leaf cavity wall (TLCW) at the National Civil Engineering Laboratory (LNEC) in Lisbon, Portugal. The model that simulates URM was not experimentally studied. This structure was modelled in the same manner as the TLCW. The purpose of this virtual model is to compare the respective performances. Two nonlinear analyses were performed and compared with the experimental test results. These analyses were carried out in two phases. The research addresses first the analysis of a structure with only reinforced concrete elements, and secondly the analysis of the same structure with reinforced concrete elements and infill walls. Both researches consider static loading and pushover analysis. The experimental pushover curve was plotted by the envelope of the experimental curve obtained on the basis of the shake table records. Crack patterns, failure modes and performance curves were plotted for both models. Finally, results were evaluated on the basis of the current regulation ASCE/SEI 41-06.

In this paper, we experimented on the deterioration process of power supply cords and analyzed the heating temperature of each part of those cords. We also analyzed the surface states, metallurgical structures surface structures and compositions of the wire melted by over-current. In the results of the analyses, the covering began to be deteriorated from the inside. The heating temperature of extension cord was higher than that of plug body. The dendrite structures appeared at the melted wire. By the SEM and EDS analyses, the dendrite structure showed the growth of copper oxide. We found out the characteristics of PVC insulated flexible cords by over-current from the above experiments and analyses. These results may be useful data in the analyses of deterioration causes of power supply cords.
Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and the Finite Element Method (FEM) are used to perform aerodynamics analysis and structure analysis. For the fluid-structure interaction analysis, each technology should be considered as well. The process of aerodynamics-structure coupled analysis can be applied to various integrated analyses from many research fields. In this study, the aerodynamics-structure coupled analysis is performed for the missile at high angle of attack condition through the use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and the Finite Element Method (FEM). For this purpose, the aerodynamics-structure coupled analyses procedure for the missile are established. The results of the integrated analysis are compared with rigid geometry of the missile and the effect of the deformation will be addressed.
The purpose of this study was to develop a buckling analysis technique for a windpower system structure under environmental loadings (hydrostatic pressure) using FEM. We analyzed an isotropic material and composite material and made a comparison using buckling pressure formulas. First, finite element analyses for an isotropic material (SC410) were performed to obtain the variation of buckling pressure for the number of elements and boundary conditions in a pressure-shell model, and the numerical results were compared with those of existing empirical formulas. Then, additional finite element analyses based on the results of the isotropic material (SC410) were performed to determine the optimum lamination angle and pattern for a composite material (URN300). The results of the FE analyses for the composite material were also compared with those of existing empirical formulas. The ply orientations (lamination angles) used in the FE analyses were $0^{\circ}$, $15^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$, $60^{\circ}$, $75^{\circ}$, and. The lamination patterns in the FE analyses were and. The lamination pattern was assumed to be the equivalent model of. The results of the FE analyses for the isotropic material (SC410) indicated that the optimal values for the number of elements and the boundary conditions were 6000 and both simply supported, respectively. The results of the FE analyses for the composite material (URN300) showed that the optimal ply orientation was $60^{\circ}{\sim}75^{\circ}$.
A few fluid structure interaction analyses have been developed for turbomachinery blades in comparison with aircraft wings. Also, the existing aeroelastic analyses for turbomachinery blades have been mostly limited to cases with a steady freestream. In reality, however, the inflowing freestream is often pulsating. Therefore, this paper presents stability and forced response analyses of an isolated three-dimensional blade under pulsating freestream conditions. A new three-dimensional unsteady vortex lattice model under a pulsating freestream has been developed in discrete time domain to examine unsteady aerodynamic forces acting on a vibrating blade. The blade's structural behaviors have been analyzed by using a three-dimensional plate model. In the aeroelastic analysis, the flutter onset of a blade under pulsating freestream is predicted by the Floquet analysis. The new time domain method can predict aeroelastic stability as well as time history.

The present study conducts CFD analyses on the internal flow fields of roots type vacuum pumps of semiconductor fabrication facility, and the computed CFD results for internal pressure and temperature distributions are applied to structural analyses of the pumps. The coupled analysis results between flow and structure show that the deformation of pump structure is mainly resulted from the thermal expansion of gas in pump, and the deformed impeller and housing produce their severe contact and impact phenomena causing mechanical damage and fracture.
