Structural health monitoring (SHM) is of great importance to super high-rise buildings. The Shanghai Tower is currently the tallest building in China, and a complete SHM system was simultaneously constructed at the beginning of the construction of the tower. Due to the variety of sensor types and the large number of measurement points in the SHM system, an online automatic structural health assessment method with few computations and no manual intervention is needed. This paper introduces a structural health assessment method for the Shanghai Tower that uses the coefficients of an autoregressive (AR) time series model as structural state indicators. An analysis of collected data indicates that the coefficients of the AR model are affected by environmental factors, and the principal component analysis method is used to remove the influence of environmental factors. Finally, the control chart method is used to track the changes in structural state indicators, and a plan for online automatic structure health state evaluation is proposed. This method is applied to long-term acceleration and inclination data from the Shanghai Tower and successfully identifies the changes in the structural state. Overall, the structural state indicators of the Shanghai Tower are stable, and the structure is in a healthy state.

Structural health monitoring (SHM) of concrete structures is necessary because structural safety is directly linked to life safety. This study proposes a transmission line configuration for SHM based on time domain reflectometry (TDR). For this purpose, six transmission lines consisting of electrical wires, rebars, and joints were prepared. The TDR waveforms were measured and analyzed in air and concrete using six transmission lines to select the most suitable configuration. A two-line wire with joints was selected as the optimal transmission line for SHM because it exhibited the highest sensitivity among the configurations. Experiments to apply SHM were performed on defective concrete blocks containing an optimal transmission line. The results showed that the defect locations in concrete were precisely investigated using TDR waveform analysis. The distances estimated from the TDR waveform were similar to the measured distances for the locations of the defects and joints in the concrete blocks. This study suggests that a transmission line consisting of two-line wires and joints may be an effective non-destructive evaluation tool for assessing the structural health of concrete.
This paper presents the structural health monitoring (SHM) of Shanghai Tower. In order to provide useful information for safety evaluation and regular maintenance under construction and in-service condition, a comprehensive structural health monitoring (SHM) system is installed in Shanghai Tower, which is composed of a main monitoring station and eleven substations. Structural responses at different construction stages are measured using this SHM system and presented in this study. Meanwhile, a detailed finite element model (FEM) is created and comparison of results between SHM and FEM is carried out. Results indicate that the time-dependent property of concrete creep is of great importance to structural response and the measured data can be used in FEM updating to obtain more accurate FEM models at different construction stages. Therefore, installation of structural health monitoring system in super-tall buildings could be considered as an effective way to assure structural safety during the construction process.
Structural Health Monitoring System (SHMS) works as an efficient platform for monitoring the health status and performance deterioration of engineering structures during long-term service periods. The objective of its installation is to provide reasonable suggestions for structural maintenance and management, and therefore ensure the structural safety based on the information extracted from the real-time measured data. In this paper, the SHMS implemented on a world-famous kilometer-level cable-stayed bridge, named as Sutong Cable-stayed Bridge (SCB), is introduced in detail. The composition and core functions of the SHMS on SCB are elaborately presented. The system consists of four main subsystems including sensory subsystem, data acquisition and transmission subsystem, data management and control subsystem and structural health evaluation subsystem. All of the four parts are decomposed to separately describe their own constitutions and connected to illustrate the systematic functions. Accordingly, the main techniques and strategies adopted in the SHMS establishment are presented and some extension researches based on structural health monitoring are discussed. The introduction of the SHMS on SCB is expected to provide references for the establishment of SHMSs on long-span bridges with similar features as well as the implementation of potential researches based on structural health monitoring.

Structural health monitoring has been conducted by non-destructive evaluation method when a turbine rotor system of an aircraft engine has cracks. Local stiffness of a turbine rotor system is degraded and critical speed is changed due to the presence of cracks in rotor. Critical speed which is affected by location and depth of crack, is obtained using compliance matrix of cracked rotor. The database of the obtained critical speed is used to evaluate structural health monitoring of a rotor system of a gas turbine engine.
Structural parameter evaluation and external force estimation are two important parts of structural health monitoring. But the structural parameter identification with limited input information is still a challenging problem. A new simultaneous identification method in time domain is proposed in this study to identify the structural parameters and evaluate the external force. Each sampling point in the time history of external force is taken as the unknowns in force evaluation. To reduce the number of unknowns for force evaluation the time domain measurements are divided into several windows. In each time window the structural excitation is decomposed by orthogonal polynomials. The time-variant excitation can be represented approximately by the linear combination of these orthogonal bases. Structural parameters and the coefficients of decomposition are added to the state variable to be identified. The extended Kalman filter (EKF) is augmented and selected as the mathematical tool for the implementation of state variable evaluation. The proposed method is validated numerically with simulation studies of a time-invariant linear structure, a hysteretic nonlinear structure and a time-variant linear shear frame, respectively. Results from the simulation studies indicate that the proposed method is capable of identifying the dynamic load and structural parameters fairly accurately. This method could also identify the time-variant and nonlinear structural parameter even with contaminated incomplete measurement.
The railway in Korea has been one of important transportation means as the introduction of high-speed train and progress in subway systems. Also, as increases in the speed of train, the guarantee of safety becomes more important, especially, in the fields of railway vehicles and/or facilities. The structural health evaluation for the prevention and diagnosis of the accidents could be conducted using several types of nondestructive evaluation techniques such as ultrasonic developed using infrared thermography or optic fiber sensors. In this paper, the recent progress in structural health evaluation for railway systems has been introduced, and the case studies have been discussed.
In this paper, vibration-based structural health monitoring methods that are suitable for caisson-type structures are examined by an experimental evaluation. To achieve the objective, four approaches are implemented. First, vibration-based structural health monitoring methods are selected to monitor the structural condition of caisson-type breakwaters. Second, a lab-scaled caisson structure is constructed to verify the selected monitoring methods. Third, the vibration characteristics are numerically analyzed using an FE model due to the change in the rubble mound condition. Finally, experimental vibration tests of the lab-scaled caisson structure are performed to monitor the vibration responses due to changes in rubble mound conditions and the performances of the selected methods are examined from the monitoring results.
This paper provides an overview of the use of different Distributed Optical Fiber Sensor systems (DOFSs) to perform Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) in the specific case of civil engineering structures. Nowadays, there are several methods available for extracting distributed measurements from optical fiber, and their use have to be according with the aims of the SHM performance. The continuous-in-space data is the common advantage of the different DOFSs over other conventional health monitoring systems and, depending on the particular characteristics of each DOFS, a global and/or local health structural evaluation is possible with different accuracy. Firstly, the fundamentals of different DOFSs and their principal advantages and disadvantages are presented. Then, laboratory and field tests using different DOFSs systems to measure strain in structural elements and civil structures are presented and discussed. Finally, based on the current applications, conclusions and future trends of DOFSs in SHM in civil structures are proposed.
To ensure the safety and functionality of a railroad bridge, maintaining the integrity of the bridge via continuous structural health monitoring is important. However, most structural integrity monitoring methods proposed to date are based on modal responses which require the extracting process and have limited availability. In this paper, the applicability of the existing damage identification method based on free-vibration reponses to time-domain deflection shapes due to moving train load is investigated. Since the proposed method directly utilizes the time-domain responses of the structure due to the moving vehicles, the extracting process for modal responses can be avoided, and the applicability of structural health evaluation can be enhanced. The feasibility of the presented method is verified via a numerical example of a simple plate girder bridge.
