Crashworthy design of a train is a systematic approach to ensure the safety of passengers and crews in railway transportation for the prescribed accident scenarios. This approach needs new structural arrangements and designs to absorb higher levels of impact energy in a controlled manner and interior designs to minimize passenger injuries. In this paper, an evaluation method for crashworthiness of Korean tilting train express is introduced. Crush characteristics for each part of tilting train express are evaluated numerically through 3-dimensional shell element analysis with LS-DYNA. Based on a head-on collision and a level crossing collision scenarios, the crash behaviors of tilting train express are evaluated numerically using full-rake collision simulations.
The Korean traffic systems for transportation vulnerable are still under development and their social life are limited even if the traffic environment systems are developed consistently. To secure his/her mobility right, it has been required to set up the particular system for the traffic welfare, for example the express and intercity bus operations for wheelchair users. The express and intercity bus development for wheelchair users based on the original bus model has been performed. This study has investigated the safety tolerance for the bus stiffness, rollover and side impact characteristics to ensure occupant safety using the finite element models. The wheelchair bus model showed the improved crashworthiness according to the partially reinforced structure and better safety tolerance for the wheelchair users.
An intensive study was conducted for crashworthiness structural design of recently developed Korean High Speed Train. Two nam design concepts are setup to protect the both crews and passengers from serious injury at heavy collision accidents, and to reduce damages of the train itself at light collision accidents. For occupant protection a collision against a movable 15 tons rigid obstacle at 110 kph and a train-to-train collision at 30 kph were selected as accident scenarios for the heavy collisions based on the train accident investigations. A train-to-train collision at 8 kph was used for the light collisions. The crashworthiness behaviors of KHST have been evaluated numerically using the finite element method. Also, one-dimensional collision analyses show good crashworthy responses in a full rake consist and 3-dimensional shell element analyses do in the front-end structures of the power car. Occupant analyses and sled tests demonstrated that KHST performs well enough to protect occupants under the considered accident scenarios.
Train crashes involve complex interaction between deformable bodies in multiple collisions. The purpose of this study is to suggest the effective analytical procedure using hybrid model fur the crashworthiness of motorized trailer of high speed train. The hybrid approach, with very short modeling times and reduced computation times to extract the global behaviour and to perform a pre-optimization of the considered structure. Firstly, various types of crash events are investigated and the conditions for numerical simulation are defined. In this paper, the structural stiffness and crashworthiness of Korean High Speed Train trailer was examined through FE analysis. Crash analyses on energy absorbing part and safety zone were carried out to determine each section force.

In this paper, optimization for frontal crashworthiness is carried out for the weight reduction design of an auto-body member with the advanced high strength steels(AHSS) such as 780TRIP and 780DP. The frontal crashworthiness is evaluated in order to optimize thicknesses for the front rail member of the ULSAB-AVC, Thicknesses of the front rail member with AHSS are optimized by comparison of crushing distance, absorbed energy and the deceleration for the auto-body with the response surface methodology. The results demonstrate that the crashworhiness of the front rail member with the optimum thicknesses of the AHSS is similar to analysis results obtained from the ULSAB-AVC project. The results also show that the weight reduction design is performed by substituting the AHSS for conventional structural steels such as 440E in the auto-body members.

The object of this study is to get the superior double hull structure to its crashworthiness against collision comparing absorbed energy capacities of its various types with each other, varying material properties, collision positions and velocities, and structural arrangements such as double hull width, web and stringer spaces, etc. Local absorbed energy capacities, failure behaviors and damage extents of their members are also considered during collision in addition to the estimations of their global ones. This paper describes a series of numerical simulations of collisions between DWT 45,000 oil tanker(struck ship) and DWT 10,500 rigid one(striking ships) using Hydrocode LS/DYNA3D. Collisions are assumed to occur at the middle of struck ship with striking one moving at right angle to its centerline. The following remarks were obtained through this study: More flexible the double hull structure is, much superior its crashworthiness against collision is. The increment of double hull width does not give much influence than other factors do. The exact use of material property such as failure strain is also important on the numerical simulation of collision.
An intensive study was conducted for the crash worthy structural design of the recently developed Korean High Speed Train (KHST). Two main design concepts were set up to protect both crews and passengers from serious injury in heavy collision accidents, and to reduce damage to the train itself in light collision accidents. A collision against a movable 15-ton rigid obstacle at 110 kph was selected from train accident investigations as the accident scenario for the heavy collisions. A train-to-train collision at the relative velocity of 16 kph was used for the light collision. The crashworthiness behaviors of KHST were numerically evaluated using FEM. Analysis results using 1-D collision dynamics model of the full rake consist and 3-D shell element model of the front end structure showed good crashworthy responses in a viewpoint of structural design. Occupant analyses and sled tests demonstrated that KHST performed well enough to protect occupants under the considered accident scenarios. Finally our numerical approaches were evaluated by a real scale collision test.
As the South Korean rolling stock industry is developing designs for full compliance with the European Standards, it is fitting to take a look at these two core standards. The paper presents an overview of the load cases and structural requirements developed in Europe for the design of safe and compatible rolling stock vehicles. These load cases and structural requirements have been compiled into two standards namely EN12663 and EN15227. Standard EN12663 was developed as a reference design requirements standard. The work was mandated and sponsored by the European Committee for Standardization and Standard issuing National Institutions. EN12663 specifies a series of proof and fatigue load cases for European rolling stock regulations compliant vehicle designs. As EN12663 does not address the crashworthiness issue, a dedicated crashworthiness standard, EN15227, was therefore developed in a similar manner through industry wide consultations managed by a Trans-European working group of experienced engineers and specialists. In both standards, the vehicle and/or trains are grouped into categories reflecting the vehicle types and/or their indented operational function. EN15227, developed to complement EN12663, addresses the "passive" crashworthiness capability of the vehicles and trains. EN15227 specifies reference crash scenarios similar to those found in the Technical Specification for Interoperability (TSI) of high speed trains operating in Europe. The overview also touches on a general comparison with the corresponding British Group Standard (GM/RT2100) and also the UIC leaflet based load cases. The exercise is extended to pertinent design load cases specified by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) in the US.

To deal with ship collision or grounding, double hull structure has been applied to ships carrying dangerous cargoes. Studies about ability of double hull structure to absorb collision energy and determining fracture state are still under researching. In this study, commercial analysis code, LS-DYNA3D, is used to analyze collision strength of ships in various scenarios. 46K Chemical/Product Carrier is used as analysis subject ship. Study about Energy-Indentation and Force-Indentation is conducted under conditions that weight and collision velocity are changed. Results of this study are very helpful to make mechanism of collision accident clear and to supply useful information about collision strength criteria.

The fatalities rate for passenger vehicles, vans, and commercial vehicles is 1.23, 1.90 and 2.46 deaths per 10,000 registered vehicles, respectively. This shows that vans and commercial vehicles are vulnerable compare to passenger vehicles. To evaluate the crashworthiness of van and Light Truck Vehicle(LTV), we carried out frontal offset crash test at 64km/h, 40% overlap as per IIHS(Insurance Institute for Highway Safety). The test result show that LTV is very poor to protect occupant at frontal crash cause there is no safety system such as airbag and pretensioner and front end length(distance from front bumper to steering wheel) is short. One of the van rated as the lowest rating even it is equipped with airbag, cause its safety cage was collapsed during the test. This result shows that the structural integrity is very important in terms of occupant protection.
