  • Architectural design decisions and structural systems arrangements affect their earthquake behaviors significantly of reinforced concrete building in Turkey. Because the performances as safe and economical against earthquake loads of reinforced concrete buildings can be provided with especially design decisions in the architectural design stage. This matter reveals the importance of design decisions in the architectural design phase and the right structural system arrangement. The purpose of this study, the short-column situation frequently observed in reinforced concrete buildings after the earthquakes occurred in Turkey are to examine comparatively the effects on behavior and the rough construction cost of the building. The obtained results show that the short column circumstance composed due to different reasons negatively affects the earthquake performance of the reinforced concrete buildings and increases the rough construction cost. This matter shows that the measures to be taken against short column formation should be foreseen especially at the architectural design stage.

  • Recent advances in low-cost remote monitoring systems have made it possible and practical to perform structural health monitoring (SHM) on a large scale. However, it is difficult for a single remote monitoring system to cover a wide range of SHM applications due to the amount of specialization required. For the remote monitoring system to be flexible, sustainable, and robust, this article introduces a new cost-effective, advanced remote monitoring and inspection system named DuraMote that can serve as a next generation supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system for civil infrastructure systems. To evaluate the performance of DuraMote, we conduct experiments at two representative counterpart sites: a bridge and water pipelines. The objectives of this article are to improve upon the existing SCADA by integrating the remote monitoring system (i.e., DuraMote), to describe a prototype SCADA for civil engineering structures, and to validate its effectiveness with long-term field deployment results.

  • The stochastic phenomena of traffic network condition, such as traffic speed and density, are affected not only by exogenous traffic control but also by endogenous changes in service time during congestion. In this paper, we propose a mixed M/G/1 queuing model by introducing a condition-varying parameter of traffic congestion to reflect structural changes in the traffic network. We also develop congestion indices to evaluate network efficiency in terms of traffic flow and economic cost in traffic operating system using structure-changing queuing model, and perform scenario analysis according to various traffic network improvement policies. Empirical analysis using Korean highway traffic operating system shows that our suggested model better captures structural changes in the traffic queue. The scenario analysis also shows that occasional reversible lane operation during peak times can be more efficient and feasible than regular lane extension in Korea.

  • In recent years, there is a strong urge to introduce GPS systems which can role in reference points and measure global positions to the field of structural measurements. In this study, a new structural measurement system using low-cost L1 single frequency GPS receivers instead of conventional expensive RTK L1&L2 dual frequency GPS receiver. This system consists of GPS OEM board, GPS antenna, wireless access points, and monitoring program based on Lambda method and makes it possible to apply to monitor a static behavior of large scaled Infra-structures, such as dams, tall buildings, road slops.

  • Nowadays, Eurocodes have become the reference standards for silo design within the European Union. They include new procedures for load assessment and structural verifications aiming to design safer silos. However, many silo manufacturers are still reluctant to use them (or at least all their prescriptions) because of the loss of competitiveness they are experiencing in comparison with former standards. This paper shows how steel cost of flat-bottomed circular silos varies when different silo geometries and stored materials are considered. The influence of critical structural verifications on steel costs, such as buckling of the silo wall, were also analyzed and some conclusions and practical recommendations for silo designers were proposed.

  • In reinforced concrete design, structural member sizes and amount of reinforcing steel areas are usually selected based on the structural designers' experience. Most existing charts provided for the design of reinforced concrete structural members were developed mainly based on force equilibrium conditions and some serviceability criteria. Sections selected from these charts may not result in an economic solution in terms of material costs as well as construction costs. Practical design aids are developed and suggested in this study for the economical design of reinforced concrete beam under flexural loading. With the beam width fixed, the depth of a beam, positive steel areas and negative steel areas are found from Khun-Tucker necessary conditions with Lagrangian multipliers to minimize the sectional cost of a beam. The developed design aids might be useful in selecting optimum reinforced concrete beam sections. Theoretical derivations and use of the developed design aids are described in this paper.

  • Recently, the importance of multi-objective optimization techniques and stochastic search methods is increasing. The stochastic search methods have the concepts of the survival of the fittest and natural selection such as genetic algorithms(GA), simulated annealing(SA) and evolution strategies (ES). As many accidents of oil tankers cause marine pollution, oil tankers of double hull or mid deck structure are being built to minimize the marine pollution. For the improvement of oil tanker design technique, an efficient optimization technique is proposed in this study. Multi-objective optimization problem of weight and cost of double hull and mid deck tanker is formulated. Discrete design variables are used considering real manufacturing, and the concept of relative production cost is also introduced. The ES method is used as an optimization technique, and the ES algorithm was developed to generate a more efficient Pareto optimal set.

  • There are three items, which are panhead displacement, tilting angle of pan head, required moment of main shaft, which representing kinematic performance of pantograph. Kinematic variables effective on kinematic performance are length of each components and installation angle, In this study, cost function is defined with 3 items, By this cost function, length of thrust rod was optimized. Finite element analysis was used to consider structural soundness. Finite element model was qualified by comparison between analysis result with experiment result. By qualified F.E, model various severe condition was simulated to consider structural soundness.

  • This paper presents cost-effectiveness evaluation of semi-active control system for cable-stayed bridge under earthquake excitation. Bi-state control method with Linear Quadratic Gaussian(LQG) optimal controller is used for generic semi-active dampers. Cost-effectiveness of the structural control system is investigated by using the life-cycle cost(LCC) concept. The evaluation results show that the efficiency of semi-active control system is increased when the damage cost due to the failure of bridge system or the bridge importance is enlarged. It was also found that the damper cost had little influence on the cost-effectiveness of semi-active control system if it was relatively small to the initial construction cost.
