Melanin-based structural coloration of birds and its biomimetic applications

  • Melanin has been a widely researched pigment by scientists for decades as it is undoubtedly the most ubiquitous and ancient pigment found in nature. Melanin plays very signifcant roles in structural plumage colors in birds: it has visible light-absorbing capabilities, and nanoscale structures can be formed by self-assembling melanin granules. Herein, we review recent progress on melanin-based structural coloration research. We hope that this review will provide current understanding of melanin's structural and optical properties, natural coloration mechanisms, and biomimetic methods to implement artifcial melanin-based structural colors.

펨토초 레이저 유도 나노 및 마이크로 구조물을 활용한 금속 표면 기능성 제어 (Controlled Surface Functionalities of metals using Femtosecond Laser-induced Nano- and Micro-scale Surface Structures)

  • With femtosecond (fs) laser pulse irradiation on metals, various types of nano- and micro-scale structures can be naturally induced at the surface through laser-matter interaction. Two notable structures are laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSSs) and cone/spike structures, which are known to significantly modify the optical and physical properties of metal surfaces. In this work, we irradiate fs laser pulses onto various types of metals, cold-rolled steel, pickled & oiled steel, Fe-18Cr-8Ni alloy, Zn-Mg-Al alloy coated steel, and pure Cu which can be useful for precise molding and imprinting processes, and adjust the morphological profiles of LIPSSs and cone/spike structures for clear structural coloration and a larger range of surface wettability control, respectively, by changing the fluence of laser and the speed of raster scan. The periods of LIPSSs on metals used in our experiments are nearly independent of laser fluence. Accordingly, the structural coloration of the surface with LIPSSs can be optimized with the morphological profile of LIPSSs, controlled only by the speed of the raster scan once the laser fluence is determined for each metal sample. However, different from LIPSSs, we demonstrate that the morphological profiles of the cone/spike structures, including their size, shape, and density, can be manipulated with both the laser fluence and the raster scan speed to increase a change in the contact angle. By injection molding and imprinting processes, it is expected that fs laser-induced surface structures on metals can be replicated to the plastic surfaces and potentially beneficial to control the optical and wetting properties of the surface of injection molded and imprinted products.

Synthesis and Characterization of Tungsten Trioxide Films Prepared by a Sol-Gel Method for Electrochromic Applications

  • Tungsten trioxide thin films are successfully synthesized by a sol-gel method using tungsten hexachloride as precursors. The structural, chemical, and optical properties of the prepared films are characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and UV-Vis spectrophotometry. The electrochemical and electrochromic properties of the films before and after heat treatment are also investigated by cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, and in situ transmittance measurement system. Compared to as-prepared films, heat-treated tungsten trioxide thin films exhibit a higher electrochemical reversibility of 0.81 and superior coloration efficiency of $65.7cm^2/C$, which implies that heat treatment at an appropriate temperature is a crucial process in a sol-gel method for having a better electrochromic performance.

폴리아크릴로니트릴의 構造變化에 있어서의 動力學的 및 統計學的 硏究 (Kinetics and Statistics of Structural Changes in Polyacrylonitrile)

  • 폴리아크릴로니트릴을 加熱할 때 着色과 同時에 構造變化가 있다는 것은 잘 알려진 事實이며 이것은 部分水素化나프틸리딘型環을 形成함에 基因하는 것으로 알려지고 있다. 本硏究는 이와 같은 構造變化의 反應을 動力學的 및 統計學的으로 取扱하여 지금까지 알려지지 않았던 새로운 事實들을 發見하였다. 첫째로 폴리아크릴로니트릴을 加熱할 때의 니트릴基의 減少는 一次反應이라는 것이며 이는 環形成反應이 긴連鎖反應으로 이루어지지 않는다는 것을 말해 주는 것이다. 다시 말하면 環形成時의 kinetic chain length는 極히 짧다는 것이다. 또 本 構造變化는 반드시 分子間反應(架橋結合)이 아니드라도, 일어날 수 있다는 것을 證明했다. 둘째로 環形成으로 니트릴基가 減少할 때 19~22%의 니트릴基가 殘存한다는 것이며 이를 統計學的으로 解析해본 結果 19.2%라는 計算値를 얻었으며 이는 實驗値와 잘 맞는 數値이다.

  • Oligomeric extracts of poly(ethylene terephthalate-co-ethylene isophthalate)s [(PET/EI] are analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC) and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR). Existence of separated peaks for small cyclics of trimer and tetramer gives the existence of structural isomeric forms. NMR confirms that cyclization of PET/EI occurs more easily at the site of isophthaloyl unit.

생체모방기술을 응용한 감성의류용 구조발색사와 직물의 물성 (The Physical Property of the Structural Color Yarn and Fabric for Emotional Garment Using Biomimetic Technology)

  • 본 연구에서는 생체모방기술을 응용하여 감성의류용 구조발색사를 방사하고, 이를 사용하여 직물을 제직 감량 가공하여 이들의 발색성 및 촉감 물성을 측정하여 감성의류용 용도의 적용성을 확인하여 다음과 같은 연구결과를 얻었다. 삼각단면을 가진 37층의 폴리에스테르와 나일론을 교호로 적층한 구조발색사의 방사조건을 확립하였으며, 이 세 가지 사의 발색성을 multi angle spectro-photometer로 확인하였다. 그리고 이 사들로 제직한 구조발색 직물 세 가지의 겉보기 색차와 반사율을 분석한 결과, 700nm에서 400nm까지의 파장에서 발색성을 확인하였다. 또한, 직물의 밀도와 조직이 다른 세 가지 구조발색 직물을 제직하고 감량 가공 처리하여 직물 역학특성치에서 촉감을 측정한 결과, $100^{\circ}C$, 60분 감량 처리한 시료가 최적설계(194ends/in ${\times}$ 105picks/in) 및 감량 조건임을 확인할 수 있었다. 그리고 감량 처리 시 온도와 처리시간 증가에 따라 감량률이 13%에서 최대 23%까지 증가함을 확인할 수 있었다. 이때 직물의 신축특성, 굽힘강성 및 전단강성은 감소하며 압축특성은 증가하는 현상을 보였다. 그리고 최적설계조건인 1번 직물시료를 $100^{\circ}C$, 60분 감량 처리할 때 촉감이 가장 우수하며 일본 몰포 직물보다 더 우수한 촉감치를 얻었다.

  • The study has been conducted to investigate the relationship between yarn structural parameters such as diameter, twist multiplier and linear density, and mechanical properties of yarns measured by KES-F System. Each mechanical characteristic values per tex have non-linear relationship to the increment of yarn diameter, but as the linear density has increased, the mechanical characteristic values except for the bending characteristics have decreased linearly. It is, however, difficult to analyze obviously on the effects of twist multiplier even though the bending and the shear characteristic values were inclined to decrease. The effect of dyeing has also considered. The results are showing that yarn-dyed samples had higher effects than top-dyed ones on the mechanical characteristics.

고속방사 PET Filament의 구조와 응력완화에 관한 연구 (Structural Characteristics and Stress Relaxation Behaviors of PET Filament in High Speed Spinning)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the structural characteristics, mechanical properties, and stress-relaxation behavior of PET filament, which were prepared at various spinning speeds(1650, 3300, 4500, 5000, 5500, and 6000 m/min) and anneal(12$0^{\circ}C$, 20 min & 15$0^{\circ}C$, 40 min). In 4500 m/min of spinning speed the crystallinity, crystallite size, and degree of orientation of PET filament rapidly increased. By increasing spinning speed, the temperature dependence of stress-relaxation sharply decreased. Same results were obtained from heat-treated samples. As a result, activation energy for stress-relaxation increased with the crystallinity and spinning speed.

  • Nylon 6 grafted with polyacrylamide(PAAm) was synthesized by a dispersion polymerization method at 6$0^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours, and a cresol-soluble graft polymer(CSGP) and water-dispersable graft polymer (WI)GP) were separated. Infra-red(IR) spectrum analysis, differential scanning calorimetery(DSC), thermogravimetery(TG), and X-ray diffraction analysis were carried out to research their structural characteristics.

Structural Analysis for the Single Crystal of 2-(4-(9H-carbazol-9-yl)benzylidene) based Dye Compound

  • The designed dye material, namely 2-(4-(9H-carbazol-9-yl)benzylidene) compound, was synthesized. After the reaction, the solid was filtered and purified by recrystalization with acetone/water. To confirm and analyze its synthesis and structural formation, the single crystal was prepared and its measurement was carried out. A yellow needle crystal of $C_{22}H_{13}N_3$ were made on a Rigaku R-AXIS RAPID diffractometer using graphite monochromated CuK${\alpha}$ radiation. All details were suggested and introduced to support and communicate this study.
