In this paper, mechanical and short-term durability properties of fly ash and slag based geopolymer concretes (FAGPC-SGPC) were investigated. The alkaline solution was prepared with a mixture of sodium silicate solution ($Na_2SiO_3$) and sodium hydroxide solution (NaOH) for geopolymer concretes. Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) concrete was also produced for comparison. Main objective of the study was to examine the usability of geopolymer concretes instead of the ordinary Portland cement concrete for structural use. In addition to this, this study was aimed to make a contribution to standardization process of the geopolymer concretes in the construction industry. For this purpose; SGPC, FAGPC and OPC specimens were exposed to sulfuric acid ($H_2SO_4$), magnesium sulfate ($MgSO_4$) and sea water (NaCl) solutions with concentrations of 5%, 5% and 3.5%, respectively. Visual inspection and weight change of the specimens were evaluated in terms of durability aspects. For the mechanical aspects; compression, splitting tensile and flexural strength tests were conducted before and after the chemical attacks to investigate the residual mechanical strengths of geopolymer concretes under chemical attacks. Results indicated that SGPC (100% slag) is stronger and durable than the FAGPC due to more stable and strong cross-linked alumina-silicate polymer structure. In addition, FAGPC specimens (100% fly ash) showed better durability resistance than the OPC specimens. However, FAGPC specimens (100% fly ash) demonstrated lower mechanical performance as compared to OPC specimens due to low reactivity of fly ash particles, low amount of calcium and more porous structure. Among the chemical environments, sulfuric acid ($H_2SO_4$) was most dangerous environment for all concrete types.

The purpose of this article is to strengthen concrete structures using buckling and non-buckling braces. Connection plates are modeled in three shapes including the effect of 1.5t hinge zone length, 2t one and without the zone (1.5t-CP, 2t-CP and WCP). According to the verification performed with ABAQUS software, the connection plates which are superior in ductility and strengthening are found. The results show adding steel braces in concrete moment frames increase the strength and stiffness of the structures up to about 12 and 3 times, respectively. The frame strength increased about 21 and 25 percent with considering the effect of 2t hinge length in connection plates compared to 1.5t-CPs and WCPs. Also the ductility of retrofitted frames with 2t-CP improved 2.06 times more than WCP ones. Thus, 2t-CP sample is the best choice for connecting steel braces to concrete moment frames for retrofitting them. Afterwards, optimum conditions for elemental coating in braces with no buckling are assessed. The length of concrete coatings could be reduced about 30 percent, and buckling did not occur. Therefore, the weight of restraining coating decreased, and its performance improved. It is worth noting that BRBs could be constructed with only steel materials, which have outer steel tubes too. In fact, only the square cross sections of the tube profiles are appropriate for removing the filler concrete, and the rectangular ones are prone to buckle around their weak axis.
In this study cadalene, which is classified into sesquiterpenes constructed with 15 carbons of naphthalene skeleton, was isolated from ethanol extracts of Zelkova wood (Zelkova serrata) using successive silica gel column chromatography. The purified cadalene compound was subjected to structural analysis using HPLC, EI-MS and $^1H$, $^{13}C-NMR$. Its molecular weight was measured to 244 (m/z) and methyl and isopropyl group were attached at C1 and C4 position, as well as hydroxyl group at C7 and methoxyl group at C3 in the naphthalene skeleton, respectively. Yield of 7-hydroxy-3-methoxycadalene amounts to 0.03% based on air dried Zelkova wood powder. It was distributed only in xylem tissues(only in heartwood) of Zelkova wood, not in leaves and bark.
This research was designed to compare the subjective evaluation of texture image and preference by structure and sensible characteristics of women's suits fabrics between on- and off-line. 78 subjects who majored in fashion design evaluated the sensibility image and preference of 15 various kinds of specimens on- and off-line. Factor analysis, t-test, Pearson correlation and regression were used for a statistical analysis by SPSS WIN 13.0. The results of this study were as follows: 1. Women's suits fabrics were classified according to five sensibility image factors: 'classic', 'sophisticated', 'natural', 'characteristic', and 'practical'. 2. The results of the t-test showed that there were no differences between the on- and off-line evaluation of sensibility images. 3. The analysis of correlation indicated that the 'classic'-'sophisticated' and 'natural'- 'practical' sensibility images show a significant correlation between the two kinds of evaluation. 4. The results of regression revealed that 'sophisticated', 'characteristic' and 'practical' sensibility images had an effect on the purchase preference of women's suits fabrics. 5. 'Sophisticated', 'characteristic' and 'classic' sensibility images had an effect on the tactile preference of women's suits fabrics. 6. The structural characteristics of fabrics: thickness, weave and weight had an effect on the 'classic' sensibility image. Thickness had an effect on the 'sophisticated' sensibility image and fabric count had an effect on the 'characteristic' sensibility image.

This study investigates, analyzes, and summarizes Dansplantation techniques and methods through practical methodology centering on fieldwork in order to present effective planting methods for large trees that have important significance. The conclusions are as follows : 1. The transplantation process of a large tree generally consists of the stages of digging up a tree, manufacturing a carrier frame, loading the tee on a vehicle, transporting, transplanting the tree, installing a strut and maintaining and managing the new transplant. In addition, planting a tree on a mounted place includes the primary procedures of trimming out the root, and preparing for transplanting the tree on a mounted place, as well as the secondary work of trimming out the root, transplanting a tree on a mounted place, maintenance and management. 2. In order to decide on a transplantation method for a large-sized tree, a structure calculation has to be performed first. That is, one must calculate the weight of the tree and the allowable stress of the strut (H-beam, etc.) fhst and then decide on the upper method through computer modeling based upon this structural calculation. 3. As a result of the analysis of a transplanted tree using the life soil method, it was confirmed that large quantities of feeder roots had developed around the root within a short time after the transplantation. The life soil method has proven to be very effective for transplantation of large-sized trees. 4. As for the production method of an H-beam strut frame, it was found that the manufacturing process and disassembly process were simple and proper; therefore, the H-beam frame is an appropriate structure to be used in the transplantation of large trees. 5. The concavo-convex method, which consists of filling the life soil in the concavo-convex area around the root, was found to be a method that promotes the growth of feeder roots within a short period of time and saves the supply of water at the same time.
Adriamycin is a commonly used chemotherapeutic agent for cancer, including acute leukemia, lymphoma, and a number of solid human tumors. However, recent studies have recognized severe cardiotoxicity after an acute dose, which are likely the result of generation of free radicals and lipid peroxidation. Therefore, the clinical uses of adriamycin have been limited. Melatonin, the pineal gland hormone known for its ability to modulate circardian rhythm, has recently been studied in its several functions, including cancer growth inhibition, stimulating the immune system, and acting as an antioxidant and radical scavenging effects. In the present study, we evaluated the effect of melatonin administration on adriamycin-induced cardiotoxicity in rat. Heart slices were prepared using a Stadie-Riggs microtome for the measurement of malondialdehyde (MDA) content used as an index of lipid peroxidation and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release as an indicator of lethal cell injury. Serious adriamycin-induced lethality was observed in rat by a single intraperitoneal injection in a dose-dependent manner. A single injection of adriamycin (25 mg/kg, i.p.) induced a lethality rate of 86%, with melatonin (10 mg/kg s.c. for 6 days) treatment reducing the adriamycin-induced lethality rate to 20%. The severe body weight loss caused by adriamycin was also significantly attenuated by melatonin treatment. Treatment of melatonin marked reduced adriamycin-induced the levels of MDA formation and LDH release. A cell damage indicated by the loss of myofibrils, swelling of the mitochondria as well as cytoplasmic vacuolization was seen in adriamycin-treated group. Melatonin attenuated the adriamycin-induced structural alterations. These data provide evidence that melatonin prevents adriamycin-induced cardiotoxicity and might serve as a combination with adriamycin to limit free radical-mediated cardiotoxicity.
Neoagaro-oligosaccharides are produced only by enzymatic degradation of agarose by ${\beta}-agarase.^{1)}$ Neoagaro-oligosaccharides inhibit the growth of bacteria, slow the rate of degradation of starch, are used as low-calorie additives to improve food quality, and have macrophage-stimulating activity. Furthermore, neoagarobiose is a rare reagent that has both moisturizing effect on skin and whitening effect on melanoma $cells.^{2)}$ An agar-degrading marine bacterium was isolated from the sea water at the northeast coast in Cheju island, Korea. The strain was gram negative, aerobic, and motile rod. The 16S rRNA of the strain had the closest match of 98% homology, with that from Agarivorans albus. On the basis of several phenotypic characters and a phylogenetic analysis, this strain was designated Agarivorans sp. JA-1. In solid agar plate, Agarivorans sp. JA-1 produced a diffusible agarase that caused agar softening around the colonies. Agarivorans sp. JA-1 was cultured for 36 hr in marine broth 2216 (Difco, USA) and the supernatant that containing an extracellular ${\beta}-agarase$ was prepared by centrifugation of culture media. The enzyme exhibited relatively strong activity at $40^{\circ}C$ and was stable up to $60^{\circ}C$. Using PCR primers derived from the ${\beta}-agarase$ gene of Vibrio sp., the gene encoding ${\beta}-agarase$ from Agarivorans sp. JA-1 was cloned and sequenced. The structural gene consists of 2931 bp encoding 976 amino acids with a predicted molecular weight of 107,360 Da. The deduced amino acid sequence showed 99% and 34% homology to $agaA^{2)}$ and $agaB^{2)}$ genes for ${\beta}-agarase$ from Vibrio sp., respectively. The expression plasmid for ${\beta}-agarase$ gene of Agarivorans sp. JA-1 is being constructed and the recombinant enzyme will be biochemically characterized.
The purpose of the current study was to investigate histologic changes in the alveolar bone of the lower molar region subsequent to the loss of their opposite molars, and to characterize chemical alterations by utilization of histochemical procedures. Twenty five rats(Sprague Dawley), approximately 150-200gm body weight, were used in this experiment. In the treated animals, upper molars were removed. The animals were decapitated by groups at the following intervals after teeth removals: 10th, 20th, 50th, 70th and 100th day. The normal, untreated rats were used as controls. The molar region of lower jaw, including the intact alvelar bone and teeth was dissected and specimens were decalcified in 3% formic acid. After the tissues were fully decalcified, the specimens were embedded in celloidin and sectioned in mesiodistal plane. These sections were stained in the following staining methods. Mallory azan stain and hematoxylin-eosin stain were utilized for structural evaluation. Polysaccharides were demonstrated by means of the PAS reaction. Acidmucopolysaccharides were studied by means of the colloidal iron stain. Alloxan-Schiff reaction was used for protein. The results were as follows: 1) In the control animals, bone resorption was noted in the distal alveolar bone proper and bone apposition was shown in the mesial alveolar bone proper. But in the treated animals, bone apposition was observed on the mesial and distal walls of the alveolus and osteoclastic activity was not noted in any walls. 2) Bone apposition was most prominent from the 10th to 20th day after treatment. 3) Appositional growth of cementum along the surface of root was prominent from the 50th to 70th day after treatment. 4) In the area where osteoblastic activity was apparent, osteoblasts were stained strongly in the PAS and alloxan-Schiff reaction. A plastic resorption line showed strong alloxan-Schiff reaction. 5) In the colloidal iron stain, the alveolar wall adjacent to the cementum apposition area was stained more strongly than the other areas.
A method for lmprovlng strengths of recycled concrete was studied to make use of it in nolmal
concrete structures. Recycled conc~ete was prepared by replacing 50% by weight of coarse aggregate with recycled aggregate. Mix design rnet hod for crushed aggregates was used and specirriens were cured by normal moisture curing method. A plastlciser and a fly ash were added to the mix to improve performance of recycled concrete. Compressive strength, flexural strength,
tensile strength, elastic modulus, stress-strain relationship, long-term compressive strength and fracture toughness were evaluated and compared with those of rlormal concretes. Recycled concrete showed, in general, lower compressive strength than normal concreks. It also showed lower elastic modulus, lower tensile and flexural strengths, and higher strain under the same stress
level. However, by reducing w /c ratio down to 35% using the plasticiser. average compressive strength(${\alpha}_{28}$) of recycled concrete was reached. with slump of $16{\pm}2$cm, to $225kg/cm^2$ or hlgher,
which is an acceptable strmgth level for normal structural concrete. I-Iowevei., elastic modulus
and strain should be improved further for practical use of recycled concrctc: in normal structure.
Fly ash addition in both concretes showed an effect of irnprovilig long term compressive strength
and reducing strengths.
Recently, there has been a growing interest in expanded sidewalks for existing bridges. The cantilever beam system applied to expanded sidewalks for existing bridges are connected with the concrete structure by adhesive anchor bolts. However, the extended sidewalks are currently constructed without standardized regulations, which lead to excessive design of the beam spacing and installation and the construction difficulties due to the excessive over-weight. Moreover, there is only limited analysis and experiment data on the post-installed adhesive anchor bolts, so the excessive number of bolts is used for the connection. This paper deals with a method to increase the effectiveness of beam sections and anchor bolts geometry for expanded sidewalk of existing bridge. The study results showed that the failure of cantilever beam connected by adhesive anchor bolts was dominated by bond failure of interface between concrete and bolt. Also, the results indicated the possibilities of improving serviceability as well as safety of the sidewalks by changing of beam section and prestressing the bolts.
