  • Presented herein are the results of a laboratory study on structural loads (icing weight and wind loads) associated with icing formation on rigidly fixed, circular power-transmission cables and cylinders. The experiments were carried out using movable wind tunnel under two different conditions: refrigerated and non-refrigerated conditions. Temporal evolution of icing loads were determined in the refrigerated laboratory and wind loads for icings at several stages of icing formation were measured in the non-refrigerated laboratory.

  • This paper discusses the multi-level optimization method in dynamic optimization problems, through stiffened plate of ship structures. In structural optimization, the computational cost increases rapidly as the number of design variables increases. And we need a great amount of calculation and time on problems of modified dynamic characteristics of large and complicated structures. In this paper, the multi-level optimization is proposed, which decreases computational time and cost. The dynamic optimum designs of stiffened plate that control the natural frequency and minimize weight subjected to constraints condition are derived. It is shown that the results are effective in the optimum modification for dynamic characteristics of the stiffened plate.

  • This study examined small-size specimen's effectiveness that is used to evaluate floor impact sound performance. Floor impact sound level of small-size specimen is higher than full-size. This is due to excessive impact power of Bang machine. Impact hammer that has small impact power relatively can solve this problem. But, according to the size of specimen, mode shape and frequency that influence to structural borne sound is changed. Slab mode of full-size specimen was changed to frequency design of resilient materials. But in case of small-size specimen, there is no change of vibration mode by resilient materials change, Vibration mode of small-size specimen is the same. Therefore, it is not proper that use small-size specimen in floor impact sound estimation.

  • Compared with the hydroforming technology for steel, the hydroforming technology for aluminum has not been actively investigated. Recently, the hydroforming of high strength aluminum tubes has attracted great interest because of its good strength to weight ratio. In this study, front side member (FSM) is fabricated with the hydroforming of aluminum tube and the mechanical properties and dimensional accuracy of the hydroformed FSM is investigated. For hydroforming process, extruded aluminum tubes with ribs to improve the structural rigidity are used. To ensure the mechanical properties, the aluminum tubes are T6 heat-treated before hydroforming.

Developing Designs and Making Men's Outdoor Breathable Waterproof Jackets with Solar Cells for Emergency Communications

  • This study provides the structural design for commercialization of outdoor breathable waterproof jackets for men merged with solar cells to enable emergency communications, utilizing wearable devices to develop smart clothing and extend convenience in everyday life. The most popular waterproof jacket with two-layer and three-layer moisture-permeable waterproof fabric was selected, based on previous studies of functional outdoor jackets and style with affinity to fashion. Flexible solar films suitable for clothing were embedded in the lining of the sleeve area and hood visor, and printed film was developed to balance weight and design. High performance smart solar jackets have application to expanding the use of smart phones for everyday and emergency communication, and leisure and outdoor sports activities, as well as day-to-day functions as a waterproof breathable outdoor jacket for men. It is also eco-friendly. Satisfying both the aesthetic and practical, a solar cell jacket with smart features, is an innovative tool for use in a variety of outdoor activities, and a fashion-forward commercialized product.

  • Zinc Oxide (ZnO) films have attracted considerable attention for transparent conducting films, because of their high conductivity, good optical transmittance from UV to near IR as well as a low-cost fabrication. To increase the conductivity of ZnO, doping of group III elements (Al, Ga, In and B) has been carried out. Transparent conducting films have been applied for optoelectric devices, the development of the transparent conducting thin films on flexible light-weight substrates are required. In this research, the transparent conducting ZnO thin films doped with Aluminum (Al) on polymer substrates were deposited by the RF magnetron suputtering method, and the structural, optical and electrical properties were investigated.

Characterization of Segmented Block Copolyurethane Network Based on Glycidyl Azide Polymer and Polycaprolactone

  • To improve the poor mechanical and low-temperature properties of glycidyl azide polymer (GAP)-based propellants, the addition of binders was investigated using GAP and flexible polymer backbone-structural polycaprolactone (PCP) at various weight(wt) ratios, and varying the ratio of Desmodur N-100 pluriisocyanate (N-100) to isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI). Using Gee's theory, the solubility parameter of the PCP network was determined, in order to elucidate the physical and chemical interaction between GAP and PCP. The structure of the binder networks was characterized by measuring the cross-link densities and molecular weights between cross-links ($M_c$) obtained by a swelling experiment using Flory-Rhener theory. The thermal and mechanical properties of the segmented block copolyurethane (GAP-b-PCP) binders prepared by the incorporation of PCP into the binder recipes were investigated, along with the effect of the different curatives ratios.

  • Flexible Table Form is being used more frequently at the level of formwork in construction site. However, one of the most common structural frameworks, the RC column-beam structure, is having problems in these factors. To improve this problems, this study developed support devices and proposed installation specifications to enable application of the one-way void slab method to flexible table form. It is expected that the effects of reducing the self-weight of the slab in the floor slab construction using flexible table form.

Simplified finite element modelling of non uniform tall building structures comprising wall and frame assemblies including P-Δ effects

  • The current investigation has been conducted to examine the effect of gravity loads on the seismic responses of the doubly asymmetric, three-dimensional structures comprising walls and frames. The proposed model includes the P-${\Delta}$ effects induced by the building weight. Based on the variational approach, a 3D finite element with two nodes and six DOF per node including P-${\Delta}$ effects is formulated. Dynamic and static governing equations are derived for dynamic and buckling analyzes of buildings braced by wall-frame systems. The influences of P-${\Delta}$ effects and height of the building on tip displacements under Hachinohe earthquake record are investigated through many structural examples.

A Study for the Design of the Air-Conditioning Duct of Korean High Speed Train (한국형 고속전철의 에어컨 덕트 설계를 위한 연구)

  • The noises generated from the air-conditioning duct are known to strongly affect the indoor-noises of high speed trains. The acoustic characteristics of an air-conditioning duct should depend on the geometry and shape of the duct. The structural material for Korean high speed train is supposed to be changed from Steel, which was used for TGV, to Aluminum in order to reduce the total train weight. Accordingly, the shape and layout of the air-conditioning duct of Korean high speed train will be different from that of TGV. Thus, this paper introduces a analytical method to predict the noise attenuation through the air-conditioning duct, based on the ISO 7235. In this method, the whole duct is divided into several pieces and the noise attenuations predicted for each duct piece are integrated to get the noise attenuation for the whole duct system. The validity of the method introduced herein is discussed through some numerical tests.
