  • In order to increase endurance flight efficiency of long endurance electric powered UAV, main wing of UAV should have high aspect ratio and low structural weight. Since a spar which consists of thin and slender structure for weight reduction can cause catastrophic failure during the flight, it is important to develop verification method of structural integrity of the spar with the light weight design. In this paper, process of structural analysis using non-linear finite element method was introduced for the verification of structural integrity of the spar. The static strength test of the spar was conducted to identify structural characteristic under the static load. Then, the experimental result of the spar was compared to the analytical result from the non-linear finite element analysis. It was found that the developed process of structural analysis could predict well the non-linear structural behavior of the spar under ultimate load.

  • SHM (Structural Health Monitoring) technique for monitoring aircraft structural health and damage, EHM (Engine Health Monitoring) for monitoring aircraft engine performance, and APM (Application Performance Management) is used for each function. APMS (Airplane Performance Monitoring System) is a program that comprehensively applies these techniques to identify the difference between the performance manual provided by the manufacturer and the actual fuel mileage of the aircraft and reflect it in the flight plan. The main purpose of using APMS is to understand the performance of each aircraft, to plan and execute flights in an optimal way, and consequently to reduce fuel consumption. First, it is to check the fuel efficiency trend of each aircraft, check the correlation between the maintenance work performed and the fuel mileage, find the cause of the fuel mileage increase/decrease, and take appropriate measures in response. Second, it is to find the cause of fuel mileage degradation in detail by checking the trends by engine performance and fuselage drag effect. Third, the APMS is to be used in making maintenance work decisions. Through APMS, aircraft with below average fuel mileage are identified, the cause of fuel mileage degradation is identified, and appropriate corrective actions are determined. Fourth, APMS data is used to analyze the economic analysis of equipment installation investment. The cost can be easily calculated as the equipment installation cost, but the benefit is fuel efficiency improvement, and the only way to check this is the manufacturer's theory. Therefore, verifying the effect after installation and verifying the economic analysis is to secure the appropriateness of the investment. Through this, proper investment in fuel efficiency improvement equipment will be made, and fuel efficiency will be improved.

  • Recently, there has been a growing interest in marine leisure sports and high speed power boat for fishing. The prototype of 20 feet class power boat was developed and authors are joined in this government-led project. The research was performed to evaluate the optimal structure and design of the structural strength necessary to ensure the structural safety of the power boat. A new material ROCICORE fiber added to the mat and roving was adopted for high-power tenacity. ANSYS Workbench has been used to make the structural model, evaluate the strength and optimize the structural design. The response of the structure to quasi-static slamming loads according to the rules and regulations of ISO 12215-5, Lloyd’s Register of Shipping and Korean Register has been implemented and studied. An optimization study for the structural response is carried out by changing the plate thickness and section modulus of stiffeners. The power boat structure derived fuel efficiency is optimized by performing the best possible structural design to minimize the hull weight.

  • RIKEN Structural Genomics Beamlines have been constructed for the crystallographic analysis in the structural genomics research at synchrotron radiation facility SPring-8. Synchrotron radiation accelerates the crystallographic analysis of protein structure. The target of the research and development is focused on the automatic beamline operation to maximize beamline efficiency. We are developing the sample management system, which is composed of the sample auto-changer and the database system, for high-throughput data collection. The sample management system and the beamline operating system make it possible to execute automatic data collection without any operators. The beamlines will be ready for user operation in autumn 2002. The concept of automatic beamline operation and the present status of RIKEN Structural Genomics Beamlines will be presented.

  • The optimal seismic retrofitting of NPP(Nuclear Power Plant) cabinet structures that contained class 1 relays were studies in this paper. During earthquake event, the failure modes of relays are not appeared in form of structural failure, but are appeared in form of contact chatter of relay. Therefore, the retrofitting of cabinet has to be aimed to the reducing of the structural response, such as acceleration. In this study, the optimal characteristic values of dampers were searched by μ-GA (micro-Genetic Algorithm) scheme for several installation patterns. To keep accuracy and efficiency of analysis, the structural models of cabinet were considered as a frame structure. The responses of structure were obtained in form of acceleration response spectra derived from the results of nonlinear time history analysis including damping nonlinearity. The fitness function of the optimum procedure was constructed based on the ratio of maximum spectral value and target GERS (General Equipment Ruggedness Spectra). The results show the good improvements of fitness fur adequate retrofitting pattern. Especially, the improvements of fitness were remarkable when the damping exponents are proper.

  • This study aims to evaluate the structural safety of the balcony photovoltaic systems easily installed or moved on the buildings. Also, the systems are controlled by solar altitudes focused on its mobility rather than high efficiency generation performance thereof. The results of the study are as follows. Two types of typical photovoltaic systems which can be mounted on the balcony are proposed, and, the sizes of the systems are designed to be adjusted within certain ranges of the frames in order to attach the various rail sizes. To evaluate the structural safety of the proposed systems, several simulation evaluations are performed on the safety evaluation standards by the Ministry of Construction-Transportation and KCI 2007. The results are that the proposed plans are reasonable in terms of stress and deflection in the structural aspects at the wind pressures of $1,907(N/m^2)$ of external wall surface under the condition of wind velocity higher than 25(m/s).

  • This work deals with the design optimization of tuned mass damper (TMD) devices used for mitigating vibrations in high-rise towers subjected to seismic accelerations. A stochastic approach is developed and the excitation is represented by a stationary filtered stochastic process. The effectiveness of the vibration control strategy is evaluated by expressing the objective function as the reduction factor of the structural response in terms of displacement and absolute acceleration. The mechanical characteristics of the tuned mass damper represent the design variables. Analyses of sensitivities are carried out by varying the input and structural parameters in order to assess the efficiency of the TMD strategy. Variations between two different criteria are also evaluated.

  • Performance-based design concept is needed to evaluate the seismic capacity of building. In this study, the method estimating the performance point of the spatial structures based on capacity spectrum method (CSM) is proposed. And for efficient evaluation for the performance point of the spatial structures, the algorithm to convert spatial structural system to ESDOF system is simulated Its efficiency is confirmed by comparing with time history analysis of full model. And dynamic behaviors of spatial structures are examined by using this method. At last, evaluation of structural performance according to variation of stiffness after plastic deformation on the substructures is carried out.

  • This study aims to present a novel optimization algorithm known as gravitational search algorithm (GSA) for structural damage detection. An objective function for damage detection is established based on structural vibration data in frequency domain, i.e., natural frequencies and mode shapes. The feasibility and efficiency of the GSA are testified on three different structures, i.e., a beam, a truss and a plate. Results show that the proposed strategy is efficient for determining the locations and the extents of structural damages using the first several modal data of the structure. Multiple damages cases in different types of structures are studied and good identification results can be obtained. The effect of measurement noise on the identification results is investigated.
