Rapid seismic performance assessment method for one story hinged precast buildings

  • In this study, seismic performance of one story hinged precast buildings, which represents the majority of existing lightweight industrial building stock of Turkey, was assessed. A lot of precast buildings, constructed in one of the important seismic zones of western Turkey, were investigated and building inventories were prepared. By this method, structural properties of inventory buildings and damaged precast buildings in recent earthquakes were compared. Damage estimations based on nonlinear analysis methods have shown that estimated damage levels of inventory buildings and observed damage levels in recent earthquakes are similar. Accuracy of damage estimation study and the simplicity of the one story precast building models implied that rapid seismic performance assessment method for these buildings can be developed. In this assessment method, capacity curves and vibration periods of precast buildings were calculated by using structural properties of precast buildings. The proposed assessment method was applied to inventory buildings by using two different seismic demand scenarios which reflect moderate and soft soil conditions. Comparison of detailed analysis and rapid assessment methods have indicated that reliable seismic performance estimations can be performed by using proposed method. It is also observed that distribution of damage estimations is compatible in both scenarios.

  • There are many uncertainties in structural failures or structures, so probabilistic failure cause assessment should be performed in order to consider the uncertainties. However, in many cases of forensic engineering, the failure cause assessments are performed by deterministic approach though number of uncertainties are existed in the failures or structures. Thus, deterministic approach may have possibility for leading to unreasonable and unrealistic failure cause assessment due to ignorance of the uncertainties. Therefore, probabilistic approach is needed to complement the shortcoming of deterministic approach and to perform the more reasonable and realistic failure cause assessment. In this study, reliability-based failure cause assessment (reliability based forensic engineering) is performed, which can incorporate uncertainties in failures and structures. For more practical application, the modified ETA technique is proposed, which automatically generates the defected structural model, performs structural analysis and reliability analysis, and calculates the failure probabilities of the failure events and the occurrence probabilities of the failure scenarios. Also, for more precise reliability analysis, uncertainties are estimated more reasonably by using bayesian approach based on the experimental laboratory testing data in forensic report.

  • North Anatolian Fault Zone is tectonically active with recent earthquakes (Mw7.6 1999-Kocaeli and Mw7.2 1999-Düzce earthquakes) and it passes through Marmara region, which is highly industrialized, densely populated and economically important part of Turkey. Many power plants, located in Marmara region, are exposed to high seismic hazard. In this study, open source OpenQuake software has been used for the probabilistic earthquake hazard analysis of Marmara region and risk assessment for the specified energy facility. The SHARE project seismic zonation model has been used in the analysis with the regional sources, NGA GMPEs and site model logic trees. The earthquake hazard results have been compared with the former and existing earthquake resistant design regulations in Turkey, TSC 2007 and TBSCD 2018. In the scope of the study, the seismic hazard assessment for a typical natural gas combined cycle power plant located in Marmara region has been achieved. The seismic risk assessment has been accomplished for a typical control building located in the power plant using obtained seismic hazard results. The structural and non-structural fragility functions and a consequence model have been used in the seismic risk assessment. Based on the seismic hazard level with a 2% probability of exceedance in 50 years, considered for especially these type of critical structures, the ratios of structural and non-structural loss to the total building cost were obtained as 8.8% and 45.7%, respectively. The results of the study enable the practical seismic risk assessment of the critical facility located on different regions.

  • Collapse was one of the typical common geological hazards during the construction of tunnels. The risk assessment of collapse was an effective way to ensure the safety of tunnels. We established a prediction model of collapse based on Bayesian Network. 76 large or medium collapses in China were analyzed. The variable set and range of the model were determined according to the statistics. A collapse prediction software was developed and its veracity was also evaluated. At last the software was used to predict tunnel collapses. It effectively evaded the disaster. Establishing the platform can be subsequent perfect. The platform can also be applied to the risk assessment of other tunnel engineering.

  • The performance based design obligates quantitative assessment of required performances by means of transparent and objective science. In this design scheme, simulation of both macro and micro-scale structural behaviors is thought to be a powerful tool. This paper proposes a way how to unify the structural safety and serviceability check method and durability assessment of RC structures. Though component chemical-physical processes are crudely assumed, system dynamics of micro-scale pore structure formation and macro-scale defects and deformation of structures was shown as possible and promising approach in future. The authors understand that the unification of structural and durability design has just started. For further progress and development, predictive tool of structural behaviors from birth to death of concrete under any specified environment and load serves as an essential technicality.

  • It has become important to evaluate the qualitive reliability and condition assessment of existing structural systems in order to establish a rational program for repair and maintenance. Since most of if existing structural system may suffer from defect corrosion and damage, it is necessary to account for their effects in fuzzy reliability analysis, In this paper, an attempt is made to develope a reliability analysis for damaged structural systems using failure possibility theory. Damage state is specified in terms of linguistic valiables using natural language information and numerical information, which are defined by fuzzy sets. Using a subjective condition index of failure possibility and information of the damage state is introduced into the calculation of failure probability.   • A reliability-based cost-benefit model for the risk management of oil platforms in the formulation of optimal decisions based on life-cycle consideration is proposed. The model is based on structural risk assessments and the integration of social issues and economics into the management decision process. Structural risks result from the platform's exposure to the random environmental loading associated with the offshore site where it is located. Several alternative designs of a typical platform are proposed and assessed from the cost-effectiveness viewpoint. This assessment is performed through the generation of cost/benefit relationships that are used, later on, to select the optimal design.

  • In this study an adequate type of offshore structure at the Sakhalin region as cold region is proposed and its structural design results are presented based on the reliability analysis. Structural safety assessment has been carried out for the proposed offshore structure at the Sakhalin area as designed by the reliability method. And a rational design procedure is presented based on the reliability analysis. Followings are drawn through the present study : - Four colum TLP structure is proposed as an adequate offshore structure type at the cold region like the Sakhalin region and the reliability-based structural design results are presented. It is seen that the proposed type is a more adequate and economic than the fixed type. - Safety assessment of the proposed structure applying the extended incremental load method is performed. - Referring the allowable safety level for offshore structures it has been found present TLP structure has sufficient structural safety at the system level as well as at the component level.

  • Since there is a large variation in measurements of the thickness of corroded elements, the thickness of corroded elements are considered as imprecise elements. There is also a considerable degree of uncertainty in a visual assessment of thickness loss. The remaining thickness of a severly corroded element may be represented by an imprecise which expresses the range over which there is uncertainty about the thickness. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to propose a new methodology to safety assessment using imprecise reliability into conventional safety assessment frameworks. For this purpose, this study presents a safety assessment model using Imprecise reliability for large civil structures and demonstrates the applicability of the approach to cable-stayed bridge projects.

  • It is now well recognized that the ultimate limit state approach is a much better basis for design and strength assessment of ships and offshore structures since it is difficult to determine the realistic margin of safety using the traditional allowable working stress approach on the basis of linear elastic method solutions together with buckling strengthchecks adjusted by a simple plasticity correction. This paper outlines ALPS theory for ultimate limit state assessment of ship structures. ALPS is a computer software which stands for nonlinear Analysis of Large Plated Structures. Application examples of ALPS program to ultimate limit state assessment of plates, stiffened panels and ship hull girders are presented. A benchmark study is made by a comparison with the ALPS solutions with other methods including class rule formulae, nonlinear finite element methods and experimental results.
