An undergraduate course named computational structural analysis becomes more significant in recent years because of its important role in industries and the recent innovation in computer technology. Typically, the course consists of introduction to finite element method, utilization of general purpose finite element software, and examples focusing on static and linear analyses on various structural members such as a beam, truss, frame, arch, and cable. However, in addition to the static and linear analyses, current industries ask graduates to acquire basic knowledge on structural dynamics and nonlinear analysis, which are not listed in the conventional syllabus of the computational structural analysis. Therefore, this study develops geometrically nonlinear examples, which can help students to easily capture the fundamental nonlinear theory, software manipulation, and problem solving skills. For the purpose, five different examples are found, developed for the analyses of cables and cable nets, which naturally have strong geometrical non-linearity. In the paper, these examples are presented, discussed, and finally compared for a better subject development.
The present study aims to determine the structural response of full scaled rectangular columns under both of vertical and lateral loads using numerical methods. In the study, the composite columns considering full concrete filled circular steel tube (FCFRST) and concrete filled double-skin rectangular steel tube (CFDSRST) section types are numerically modelled using ANSYS software. Vertical and lateral loads are applied to models to assess the structural response of the composite elements. Also similar investigations are done for reinforced concrete rectangular (RCR) columns to compare the results with those of composite elements. The analyses of the systems are statically performed for both linear and nonlinear materials. In linear static analyses, both of vertical and lateral loads are applied to models as only one step. However in nonlinear analyses, while vertical loads are applied to model as only one step, lateral loads are applied to systems as step by step. The displacement and stress changes in some critical nodes and sections and contour diagrams are reported by graphs and figures. At the end of the study, it is demonstrated that the nonlinear models reveal more accurate result then those of linear models. Also, it is highlighted that composite columns provide more and more safety, ductility compared to reinforced concrete column.
Vulnerability studies on the existing building stock require that a large number of buildings is analyzed to obtain statistically significant evaluations of the seismic performance. Therefore, analytical evaluation methods need to be based on simplified methodologies of analysis which can afford the treatment of a large building population with a reasonable computational effort. Simplified Pushover-Based Earthquake Loss Assessment approach (SP-BELA), where a simplified methodology to identify the structural capacity of the building through the definition of a pushover curve is adopted, was developed on these bases. Main objective of the research work presented in this paper is to validate the simplified methodology implemented in SP-BELA against the results of more sophisticated nonlinear dynamic analyses (NLDAs). The comparison is performed for RC buildings designed only to vertical loads, representative of the "as built" in Italy and in Mediterranean countries with a building stock very similar to the Italian one. In NLDAs the non linear and degrading behaviour, typical of the structures under consideration when subjected to high seismic loads, is evaluated using models able to capture, with adequate accuracy, the non linear behaviour of RC structural elements taking into account stiffness degradation, strength deterioration, and pinching effect. Results show when simplified analyses are in good agreement with NLDAs. As a consequence, unsatisfactory results from simplified analysis are pointed out to address their current applicability limits.

Most yacht sails are made of thin fabric, and they have a cambered shape to generate lift force; however, their shape can be easily deformed by wind pressure. Deformation of the sail shape changes the flow characteristics over the sail, which in turn further deforms the sail shape. Therefore, fluid-structure interaction (FSI) analysis is applied for the precise evaluation or optimization of the sail design. In this study, fluid flow analyses are performed for the main sail of a 30-foot yacht, and the results are applied to loading conditions for structural analyses. By applying the supporting forces from the rig, such as the mast and boom-end outhaul, as boundary conditions for structural analysis, the deformed sail shape is identified. Both the flow analyses and the structural analyses are iteratively carried out for the deformed sail shape. A comparison of the flow characteristics and surface pressures over the deformed sail shape with those over the initial shape shows that a considerable difference exists between the two and that FSI analysis is suitable for application to sail design.
Results from nonlinear time-history analyses of wall-frame structural models indicate that the condition of vulnerable foundations -for which uplifting and reaching the bearing capacity of the supporting soil can occur before yielding at the base of the shear walls- may not be necessarily detrimental to the drift response of buildings under strong ground motions. Analyses also show that a soil-foundation system can inherently have deformation capacity well in excess of the demand and thus act as a source of energy dissipation that protects the structural integrity of the shear walls.
Damping out high frequency low amplitude structural vibrations using PZT bimorph is presented. Static and Dynamic analyses of the piezoelectric bimorph bender were performed. Three layer piezoelectric actuators were modeled with SOLID5 coupled-field elements using ANSYS. Static deflection and modal analyses of the piezoelectric bimorph bender are presented. Proper tuning of the values of the resistor and inductor in the shunt circuit is required for maximum vibration suppression.
A first-order moment method (FORM) reliability analysis is commonly used for structural stability analysis. It requires the values and partial derivatives of the performance to function with respect to the random variables for the design. These calculations can be cumbersome when the performance functions are implicit. A Gaussian process (GP)-based response surface is adopted in this study to approximate the limit state function. By using a trained GP model, a large number of values and partial derivatives of the performance functions can be obtained for conventional reliability analysis with a FORM, thereby reducing the number of stability analysis calculations. This dynamic renewed knowledge source can provide great assistance in improving the predictive capacity of GP during the iterative process, particularly from the view of machine learning. An iterative algorithm is therefore proposed to improve the precision of GP approximation around the design point by constantly adding new design points to the initial training set. Examples are provided to illustrate the GP-based response surface for both structural and non-structural reliability analyses. The results show that the proposed approach is applicable to structural reliability analyses that involve implicit performance functions and structural response evaluations that entail time-consuming finite element analyses.

Mineral wool is an insulation material commonly used in passive fire protection (PFP) systems on offshore installations. Insulation materials have only been considered functional materials for thermal analysis in the conventional offshore PFP system design method. Hence, the structural performance of insulation has yet to be considered in the design of PFP systems. However, the structural elements of offshore PFP systems are often designed with excessive dimensions to satisfy structural requirements under external loads such as wind, fire and explosive pressure. To verify the structural contribution of insulation material, it was considered a structural material in this study. A series of material tensile tests was undertaken with two types of mineral wool at room temperature and at elevated temperatures for fire conditions. The mechanical properties were then verified with modified methods, and a database was constructed for application in a series of nonlinear structural and thermal finite-element analyses of an offshore bulkhead-type PFP system. Numerical analyses were performed with a conventional model without insulation and with a new suggested model with insulation. These analyses showed the structural contribution of the insulation in the structural behaviour of the PFP panel. The results suggest the need to consider the structural strength of the insulation material in PFP systems during the structural design step for offshore installations.

In order to analyze the lateral-load resisting capability according to the core locations, three-dimensional structural analyses were performed for 20-story buildings with symmetric plan. Four analytical models for a center core, a single-axial eccentric core, and a double-axial eccentric core were constructed, and eigenvalue analyses, wind-load analyses, and earthquake-load analyses were performed. Torsion did not occur in the central core building, but the bending and torsion occurred in combination with the arrangement of the eccentric core, and the lateral-load resisting capability was degraded. The change in the wind load according to the eccentric core was small, but the maximum lateral displacement was found to increase greatly by the eccentric arrangement of the core. In addition, in case of the eccentric core, the seismic load was slightly reduced compared to the center core due to the decrease in the lateral stiffness, but it was found that the maximum story drift ratio increased significantly due to the torsional effect. Based on these results, the structural behavior according to the position of the core can be clearified and used as a guideline for core locations in the planning and design stage.

This paper presents the structural analysis of RIROB(Reactor Inspection Robot). Actually, several analyses such as kinetodynamics analysis, fluid mechanics analysis and structural mechanics analysis etc. should be carried out in the design of RIROB. These analyses are executed through the use of com-puter aided engineering(CAE) systems. The kinetodynamics analysis is carried out using a simple fluid dynamic analysis model for the water flow over the sensor support surface instead of difficult fluid mechanics analysis. Simultaneously the structural mechanics analysis is carried out to obtain the mini-mum thickness of the RIROB housing. The minimum thickness of the RIROB housing is evaluated to be 1.0 ㎝ for the safe design of RIROB. The kinetodynamics analysis of RIROB is performed using ADAMS and the static structural mechanics analysis of RIROB is performed using NISA.
