Purpose: Currently, there is a variety of systems available for predicting prognosis of trauma patients such as trauma score, Injury severity score (ISS) and acid-base variables. But it is not clear that the initial acid-base variables are predictors of prognosis in trauma patients at the emergency department. The objective of this study is to compare the base deficit, lactate and strong ion gap as an early predictor of mortality in trauma patients. Methods: Retrospective record review of 136 trauma patients needed to admit to intensive care unit via emergency department (June 2004 to February 2005). Data included age, injury mechanism, ISS, Revised trauma score (RTS), Multiple organ dysfunction score (MODS), Acute physiology and chronic health evaluation III (APACHE III), Glasgow coma scale (GCS), laboratory profiles, calculated anion gap and strong ion gap. Patients were divided into survivors and non-survivors, shock group and non-shock group with comparison by t-test;significance was assumed for p<0.05. Correlation between acid-base variables and mean arterial blood pressure (MABP) was evaluated. Results: There was a significant difference between the RTS (p=0.00), APACHE III (p=0.00), MODS (p=0.00), GCS (p=0.00) of survivors and non-survivors. There was no significant difference between the ISS (p=0.082), lactate (p=0.541), base excess (p=0.468) and SIG (p=0.894) of survivors and non-survivors. There was a significant difference between the RTS (p=0.023), APACHE III (p=0.002), lactate (p=0.000), base excess (p=0.000) and SIG (p=0.000) of shock and non-shock group. There was no significant difference between the ISS (p=0.270), MODS (p=0.442) and GCS (p=0.432) of shock and non-shock group. The base excess was most correlated to MABP (r2=0.150). Conclusion: Initial base deficit, serum lactate and SIG are not predictors of mortality in moderate to severe trauma patients. Initial base deficit, serum lactate and SIG are correlated with the mean arterial blood pressure in trauma patients in emergency department.

Purpose: A high anion gap (AG) is known to be a significant risk factor for serious acid-base imbalances and death in acute poisoning cases. The strong ion difference (SID), or strong ion gap (SIG), has recently been used to predict in-hospital mortality or acute kidney injury (AKI) in patients with systemic inflammatory response syndrome. This study presents a comprehensive acid-base analysis in order to identify the predictive value of the SIG for disease severity in severe poisoning. Methods: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted on acute poisoning patients treated in the emergency intensive care unit (ICU) between December 2015 and November 2020. Initial serum electrolytes, base deficit (BD), AG, SIG, and laboratory parameters were concurrently measured upon hospital arrival and were subsequently used along with Stewart's approach to acid-base analysis to predict AKI development and in-hospital death. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) and logistic regression analysis were used as statistical tests. Results: Overall, 343 patients who were treated in the intensive care unit were enrolled. The initial levels of lactate, AG, and BD were significantly higher in the AKI group (n=62). Both effective SID [SIDe] (20.3 vs. 26.4 mEq/L, p<0.001) and SIG (20.2 vs. 16.5 mEq/L, p<0.001) were significantly higher in the AKI group; however, the AUC of serum SIDe was 0.842 (95% confidence interval [CI]=0.799-0.879). Serum SIDe had a higher predictive capacity for AKI than initial creatinine (AUC=0.796, 95% CI=0.749-0.837), BD (AUC=0.761, 95% CI=0.712-0.805), and AG (AUC=0.660, 95% CI=0.607-0.711). Multivariate logistic regression analyses revealed that diabetes, lactic acidosis, high SIG, and low SIDe were significant risk factors for in-hospital mortality. Conclusion: Initial SIDe and SIG were identified as useful predictors of AKI and in-hospital mortality in intoxicated patients who were critically ill. Further research is necessary to evaluate the physiological nature of the toxicant or unmeasured anions in such patients.

The experimental studies for the etch properties of the oxide grown on silicon substrate, which is in diluted hydrogen fluoride (HF) solution, are presented. Using different ion implantation dosages, dopants and energies, silicon substrate was implanted. The wet etching in diluted HF solution is used as a mean of wafer cleaning at various steps of VLSI processing. It is shown that the wet etch rate of oxide grown on various implanted silicon substrates is a strong function of ion implantation dopants, dosages and energies. This phenomenon has never been reported before. This paper shows that the difference of wet etch rate of oxide by ion implantation conditions is attributed to the kinds and volumes of dopants which was diffused out into $SiO_2$ from implanted silicon during thermal oxidation.

An ion-exchange/conductometric method is applied for the determination of total acidity in simulated atmospheric samples. Non-$H^+$ cations and strong acid anions are enriched by the preconcentrator columns in series and eluted through the corresponding parallel suppressor units. The conductivities from each channel correspond to the concentrations of the resulting ionized species in equivalents per unit volume. The difference is the measure of acidity due to strong acids. With 5-min sampling at a flow rate of 0.3 mL/min, the detection limits for ${NH_4}^+$ and ${SO_4}^{2-}$ are 0.3 and $0.1{\mu}equiv/L$, respectively. The acidity for samples composed of various ions can be determined without significant error, usually less than 5%. The proposed method discriminates against the artifact from the $CO_2$ dissolution. Principles of acidity measurements are also presented.
Transport of carbon and boron impurity ions parallel to magnetic field lines in the tokamak SOL (scrape-off layer) is numerically investigated for a one-dimensional steady state. The spatial distributions of density and velocity of the impurity ions in a steady state are calculated by finite difference method for a single-fluid model. The calculated results show that among forces acting on SOL particles thermal force produced tv plasma temperature gradient is a principal force determining the feature of impurity distribution profiles in the tokamak edge. However, strong collisional friction forces appearing dominant in front of the diverter plate restrain impurity ion flows due to temperature gradients from moving toward the midplane. Consequently, the stagnation point develops in the impurity flow by these two forces near the diverter region, in which ion flows change their directions. Impurity ions turn out to be accumulated at the stagnation points, where peaked profiles of highly-ionized state ions are relatively predominant over those of low-ionized state ions.
The Electron/Hole Pair is generated when the Activation Energy produces by Ultraviolet Ray illumination to the Semiconductor. And $OH^-$ ion produces by Water Photo-Cleavage reacts with Positive Hole. As a result, OH Radical acting as strong oxidant is generated and then Photocatalytic Oxidation Reaction occurs. The Photocatalytic Oxidation can oxidize the chlorophenol to Chloride and Carbon Dioxide easier, safer and shorter than conventional Water Treatment Process With the same degree of chlorination, the $Cl^-$ ion at para (C4) position is most easily replaced by the OH radical. And then, the blocking effect of $OH^-$ ion between the $Cl^-$ ions and $Cl^-$ ions at symmetrical location is easily replaced by the OH radical. For mono-, di-, tri-chlorophenols, there is no obvious difference in decomposition rate, decomposition efficiency and completeness of the decomposition reaction except for 2,3-dichloropheno, 2,4,5-, 2,3,4-trichlorophenol. The decomposition efficiency is higher than 75% and completeness of the decomposition reaction is higher than 70%. Therefore, continuous flow photocatalytic reactor is promising process to remove the chlorinated aromatic compounds which is more toxic than non-chlorinated aromatic compound.
Acid-base disorder is a common problem in veterinary emergency and critical care. Traditional methods, as well as the Stewart method based on strong ion difference concepts and the Fencl-Stewart method, can be used to analyze the underlying causes. On the other hand, there are insufficient comparative study data on these methods in cats. From 2018 to 2020, 327 acid-base analysis data were collected from 69 sick and 18 healthy cats. The three most well-known methods (traditional method, Stewart method, and Fencl-Stewart method) were used to analyze the acid-base status. The frequency of acid-base imbalances and the degree of variation according to the disease were also evaluated. In the traditional acid-base analysis, 5/69 (7.2%) cats showed a normal acid-base status, and 23.2% and 40.6% of the simple and mixed disorders, respectively. The Fencl-Stewart method showed changes in both the acidotic and alkalotic processes in 64/69 (92.8%), whereas all cats showed an abnormal status in the Fencl-Stewart method (semiquantitative approach). The frequencies of the different acid-base imbalances were identified according to the analysis method. These findings can assist in analyzing the underlying causes of acid-base imbalance and developing the appropriate treatment.

A pulsed laser ablation deposition (PLAD) technique has been used for producing fine particle as well as thin film at relatively low substrate temperatures. However, in order to manufacture and evaluate such materials in detail, motions of plume particles generated by laser ablation have to be understood and interactions between the particles by ablation and gas plasma have to be clarified. Therefore, this paper was focused on the understanding of plume motion in laser ablation assisted by Ar plasma at 50(mTorr). Two-dimensional hybrid model consisting of fluid and particle models was developed and three kinds of plume particles which are carbon atom (C), ion $(C^+)$ and electron were considered in the calculation of particle method It was obtained that ablated $C^+$ was electrically captured in Ar plasmas by strong electric field (E). The difference between motions of the ablated electrons and $C^+$ made E strong and the collisional processes active.
Silica glass is a core material for optical fiber in optical telecommunications, but its centrosymmetry eliminates the second order nonlinearity. But it is experimentally well known that the space charge polarization induces the Second Harmonic Generation (SHG) when a strong DC voltage is applied to silica glass for a long period of time with metal blocking electrodes. In this report, the results of a theoretical calculation of the nonlinear optical property caused by the space charge polarization, and a model of a numerical analysis to predict the small chance in nonlinear optical property as functions of time and space are provided. Assuming that amorphous silica is a solid state electrolyte and sodium ion is the only mobile charge carrier, 'Finite Difference Method' was employed for modeling of numerical analysis. The distributions of the concentration of sodium ion and electric field as functions of a normalized length of the specimen and a normalized applied voltage were simulated.
The relationship between ferromagnet anisotropic magnetization and the antiferromagnet atomic spin configuration was investigated for various angles of the uniaxial deposition magnetic field of the FeMn layer in the Corning glass/Ta(5nm)/NiFe(7nm)/FeMn(25nm)/Ta(5nm) multilayer that was prepared by the ion beam sputter deposition. The exchange bias field ($H_{ex}$) obtained from the measurement of the easy-axis MR loop decreased to 40 Oe at the deposition field angle of $45^{\circ}$, and to 0 Oe at the angle of $90^{\circ}$. When the difference between the uniaxial axis between the ferromagnet NiFe and the antiferromagnet FeMn was $90^{\circ}$, the strong antiferromagnetic dipole moment of FeMn caused the weak ferromagnetic dipole moment of NiFe to rotate in the interface.
