The Yangsan fault system of Kyungsang Basin in the southeastern part of Korean peninsula is one of the most important structures in the peninsula. A number of strong earthquakes occurred in the vicinity of the fault. It was suggested that this fault can be divided into three segments: northern, central and southern ones. Earthquake data around the Yangsan fault were classified into two groups as incomplete and complete ones; the former is the data before the Choseon Dynasty and the latter is those since the dynasty. The maximum likelihood method was applied to compute seismicity parameters such as earthquake occurrence rates, b-values of frequency-magnitude relation and maximum possible magnitudes for each segment and the entire fault. These parameters show considerably different values from segment to segment. The b-value for the entire fault turned out to be 0.85 and maximum possible magnitudes for the northern, central and southern segments are 5.2, 6.8 and 6.0, respectively. The mean return periods for the maximum possible magnitudes for each segments are greater than 1000 years. In addition, according to the analysis of the frequency-magnitude relation, the occurrence pattern of earthquakes around the Yangsan fault show more similarity to the characteristic earthquake model than the Gutenberg-Richter model. The data for each segments are, however, too scarce to obtain any physically meaningful results.

Five half-scale beam-to-column connections in a precast concrete frame were tested with cyclic loading that simulated earthquake-type motions. Five half -scale interior beam-column assemblies representing a portion of a frame subjected to simulated seismic loading were tested, including one monolithic specimen and four precast specimens. Variables included the detailing used at the joint to achieve a structural continuity of the beam reinforcement, and the type of special reinforcement in the connection (whether ECC or transverse reinforcement). The specimen design followed the strong-column-weak-beam concept. The beam reinforcement was purposely designed and detailed to develop plastic hinges at the beam and to impose large inelastic shear force demands into the joint. The joint performance was evaluated on the basis of connection strength, stiffness, energy dissipation, and drift capacity. From the test results, the plastic hinges at the beam controlled the specimen failure. In general, the performance of the beam-to-column connections was satisfactory. The joint strength was 1.15 times of that expected for monolithic reinforced concrete construction. The specimen behavior was ductile due to tensile deformability by ECC and the yielding steel plate, while the strength was nearly constant up to a drift of 3.5 percent.
The Odaesan earthquake $(M_L=4.8)$ occurred near Mt. Odae, Jinbu-Myon, Pyongchang-Gun, Kangwon Province on January 20, 2007. It has a shallow focal depth about 10 km. Its felt area covers most of the southern peninsula except some southern and western inland area. The maximum MM intensity was VI in the areas including Jinbu, Doam, Kangreung, Jumunjin, and Pyongchang. In these areas, there was a very strong shaking that caused several cracks on the walls of buildings and houses, slates falling off the roof, tiles being off the wall, things falling off the desk, and rock falling from the mountains. In order to get fault plane solutions, grid searches were performed by fitting distributions of P-wave first-motion polarities and SH/P amplitude ratios for each event. The results showed that the main shock represented right-lateral strike-slip sense and two aftershocks, reverse sense. It seems that the seismogenic fault may be the NNE-SSW trending Weoljeongsa fault near the epicenter based on the distribution of epicenters (foreshock, main shock, and aftershocks), damage area, and fault plane solution. The distribution of the epicenters indicates that the length of the subsurface rupture is estimated to be about 2 km.
A rapid progress has been made over last decade in the state-of-the-art earthquake structura1 engineering towards a better understanding of both the earthqauke ground motion and structural response. These efforts seek to ensure that there will be no serious injury or loss of life in the event of earthquake, and that structures can be built at minimum cost. The design of structures in general, concrete structures in particular, to resist strong ground input motions is not a simple matter, and analytical models for such structures must be developed from a design perspective that accounts for the complexities of the structural responses. The primary obj ective of earthquake structural engineering research is to ensure the safety of structures by understanding and improving a design methodology. Ideally, this would require the development of an analytical model related to a design methodology that ensures a ductile performance. For the accurate assessment of the adequacy of analytically developed model, experiments conducted to study the inplane inelastic cyclic behavior of structures should verify the analytical approach. The fundamental goal of this paper is to present and demonstrate experimentally verified analytical methods that provide the adequate degree of safety and confidience in the behavior of reinforced concrete structural components. This study further attempts to extend the developed modeling techruque for use by practicing structural engineers for both the analysis and design.Plication of the relaxed diaphragm through left thoracotomy was done and result was excellent as seen on Fig. 5. Cause of eventration of the left hemidiaphragm was due to paralysis of the left phrenic nerve which was tested during thoracotomy.
Using survey data of selected 1,349 individuals nationwide in Korea, we measure the influencing factors for the acceptance of nuclear power and estimates the probability of acceptance under several scenarios with different percentages of monetary compensation. Results of panel probit demonstrate that nuclear risk aversion tendency was found to be higher in case of female, younger age, past experience of extreme event such as an earthquake. However, the residents' residency nearby the nuclear power plant was not related to the risk-aversion tendency. In addition, we found that the nuclear acceptance is improved when the monetary compensation rate is increased. Although the policy demand intended to reduce GHG emissions in South Korea, the expansion of nuclear power is not be easy due to the occurrence of recent strong earthquakes because the risk attitude of an individual is influenced by subjective assessments formed through direct and indirect experiences of natural disasters such as an earthquake. Our results suggest that the opposition to construction of nuclear power plant is expected to be further intensified especially when combined with the experiences of threatening earthquakes. As a result, the debate and policy conflicts of nuclear power plants will consistently continue and large social costs are apparent for the acceptance of nuclear power plant.
Purpose: The evaluation of seismic performance of critical structures has been emerging a key issue in Korea, since a magnitude 5.8 earthquake, the worst in Koran history, struck Gyeongju, southern area in Korea on september 12th, 2016. In particular, the catastrophic failure of nonstructural components such as sprinkler piping systems can cause significant economic loss or loss of life during and after an earthquake. The nonstructural components can be more fragile than structural components in seismic behavior. Method: This study presents the seismic performance evaluation of fire protection piping system, using coupled building-piping system installed with Triple Friction Pendulum Bearings (TPBs). Kobe (Japan), Kocaeli (Turkey), and GyeongJu (Korea) were selected to consider the uncertainty of ground motions in this study. Result: In the simulation results, it was observed that the reduction of maximum displacements of the piping system with the TPBs' system was significant: Kobe, Kocaeli, and Gyeongju cases were 49%, 14.4% and 21.5%, respectively. Conclusion: Therefore, using seismically isolated system in a building-piping system can be more effective to reduce the seismic risk than a normally installed building-piping systems without TPBs in strong earthquakes.

In order to quantify the relationships of the important physical factors relating failure to strong earthquake loading, the plastic fatigue problems for structural components under repeated loading were reviewed first. A new concept of very low cycle fatigue failure for structural components under severe cyclic excitations as in strong earthquakes was represented. Also, an experimental study was made of the very low cycle fatigue failure of structural steel elements. It was attempted to realize the ultimate failure in the course of loading repetitions of the order of several to twenty. The test specimen had a form of rectangular plate, representing a thin-plated element in a steel member as wide-flange cross section. It was subjected to uniaxial loading repeatedly, until complete failure takes place after undergoing inelastic buckling, plastic elongation and/or their combination. It was seen as a result that the state of the ultimate failure is closely related to the maximum strain at the extreme fiber in the cross section.

This paper evaluated the safety and serviceability of a building structure considering the multi-hazard and proposed TMD-based adaptive smart control system to improve the structural performance. To make multi-hazard loads, an artificial earthquake and artificial wind loads were generated based on representative regions of strong seismicity and strong wind in U.S.A. The safety and serviceability of a 20-story example building structure were investigated using the generated artificial loads. A smart TMD was employed to improve the safety and serviceability of the example structure and its capacity of structural performance improvement was evaluated. The smart TMD was comprised of a MR (magnetorheological) damper. Numerical analysis showed that the example building structure could not satisfy the design limit of safety and serviceability with respect to multi-hazard. The smart TMD effectively reduced the seismic responses associated with the safety and wind-induce responses associated with serviceability.
Seismic isolation is an effective method for the protection of buildings and their contents during strong earthquakes. This research work aims to assess the appropriateness of the linear and nonlinear models that can be used in the analysis of typical low-rise base isolated steel buildings, taking into account the inherent nonlinearities of the isolation system as well as the potential nonlinearities of the superstructure in case of strong ground motions. The accuracy of the linearization of the isolator properties according to Eurocode 8 is evaluated comparatively with the corresponding response that can be obtained through the nonlinear hysteretic Bouc-Wen constitutive model. The suitability of the linearized model in the determination of the size of the required seismic gap is assessed, under various earthquake intensities, considering relevant methods that are provided by building codes. Furthermore, the validity of the common assumption of elastic behavior for the superstructure is explored and the alteration of the structural response due to the inelastic deformations of the superstructure as a consequence of potential collision to the restraining moat wall is studied. The usage of a nonlinear model for the isolation system is found to be necessary in order to achieve a sufficiently accurate assessment of the structural response and a reliable estimation of the required width of the provided seismic gap. Moreover, the simulations reveal that the superstructure's inelasticity should be taken into account, especially if the response of the structure under high magnitude earthquakes is investigated. The consideration of the inelasticity of the superstructure is also recommended in studies of structural collision of seismically isolated structures to the surrounding moat wall, since it affects the response.

Concrete filled steel tube (CFT) columns have been widely used in moment resisting frame structures both in seismic zones. This paper discusses the design of such members based on the advanced methods introduced in the 2005 AISC Specification and the 2005 Seismic Provisions. This study focuses particularly on design following both linear and nonlinear methods utilizing equivalent static and dynamic loads for low-rise moment frames. The paper begins with an examination of the significance of pseudo-elastic design interaction equations and the plastic ductility demand ratios due to combined axial compressive force and bending moment in CFT members. Based on advanced computational simulations for a series of five-story composite moment frames, this paper then investigates both building performance and new techniques to evaluate building damage during a strong earthquake. It is shown that 2D equivalent static analyses can provide good design approximations to the force distributions in moment frames subjected to large inelastic lateral loads. Dynamic analyses utilizing strong ground motions generally produce higher strength ratios than those from equivalent static analyses, but on more localized basis. In addition, ductility ratios obtained from the nonlinear dynamic analysis are sufficient to detect which CFT columns undergo significant deformations.
