  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the phenomenon of son preference and the related factors among married women in Metro Manila Philippines and to compare between Filipino women and Chinese-Filipino women in many respects. Local schools were contacted for recruitment of participants (n=206) The results showed that more than a half of the respondents(54.5%) preferred a son for the first child. On the other hand almost a half(44.7%) preferred a daughter for the second child. It is interesting that almost a third of married women showed an equal preference between a son and a daughter for the first child (34.2%) and the second child (31.2%) The results of multiple regression analysis revealed that son preference was most strongly related to women's patriarchal attitude and orientation and secondly to a strong son preference for the first child. Two groups of women Filipino and Chinese-Filipino were compared in the level of parental support and expectation for sons and d ughters perception of women's position in family and society patriarchal attitudes and orientation sex preference for the first and the second child reasons of son preference and demographic characteristics. It was found that filipino women tended to prefer a daughter for the second child much more and to perceive women's position much higher than Chinese-Filipino women. Filipino mothers showed an equal level of support and expectations for sons and daughters much more than Chinese groups. For the reasons of son preference it was notable that Filipino women tended to rely on sons in old age much more than Filipino counterparts. Based on the findings of this study three factors were found strong enough to drawour attention. Daughter preference high position of women and equal support for sons and daughters appeared to be closely related in a meaningful way. Future studies need to focus on the relationships among three factors in depth Three factors suggest some important direction tha a strong son preference country like Korea need to head forward in a near future.

  • We examined the relationship between plasma folate and total homocysteine(Hcy) levels and the distribution of plasma folate and Hcy levels from 204 Korean adults(113 men and 91 women aged between 20yr and 69yr). Plasma folate levels were significantly lower in men(12.2nmol/L) than in women(14.6nmol/L) after controlling for smoking and drinking(p<0.05). Plasma Hcy levels were significantly higher in men(13.9$\mu$mol/L) than in women(11.8$\mu$mol/L) after controlling and drinking. Plasma Hcy levels were more more strongly correlated with plasma folate in women(${\gamma}$=-0.321, p<0.05) than in men(${\gamma}$=-0.202, p<0.05), but the difference between men and women was no longer statistically significant controlling for plasma folate concentration. Prevalence of mild homocysteinemia(plama Hcy>15$\mu$mol/L) was greatest among subjects with lowest folate status. These results indicate a strong association between plasma Hcy concentration and folate status and the poor folate status is the strong causative factor of mild homocysteinemia. • I study how the deviation of strong women clashes with patriarchism and the clash is represented in the films. Women of Spirit's in 1960's narrative deals with the generational conflicts and the older's defeat, and that reflects the changes of the times. The narrative of Horse-year Bride in 1960's deals with changes of housewives' status, deviation and return of the strong-willed women, and becoming 'a wise mother and good wife'. The Daughter-in-Law Born in the Year of Horse in 1970's has two meanings - rejecting the active women and reinforcing patriarchism. The narratives of these films mean the obedience to patriarchism and the punishment women for their activity. But, these films also show the pleasure of resistance by revealing the gap and the contradiction of patriarchism.

  • Objectives: This study was done to determine the prevalence of radiographic ankle osteoarthritis (OA) in Korean women with clinical primary ankle OA. Methods: This analysis involved 160 Korean women who visited our out patient clinic due to ankle joint pain. Ankle AP and lateral weight-bearing radiographs were evaluated retrospectively to check whether they have radiographic OA or not. Radiographs were read for features of ankle OA using School classification. Demographic factors and radiographic findings in both radiographic ankle OA group and non-radiographic ankle OA group were analyzed by the student t-test, the chi square test and the Pearson's analysis. A p value <0.05 was considered significant. Results: The prevalence of radiographic ankle OA in Korean women is 18.2 % in patient between 18 and 39 years and is 55.6 % in patient over 40. There was significant difference between two groups with age (P<0.001) and relatively strong correlation between radiographic OA and age (r=0.474, P<0.001). Conclusion: These results show that the prevalence of Korean women with radiographic changes of ankle OA was 45 % and there was relatively strong correlation between age and radiographic ankle OA.

  • Antioxidant activities of Ulmus davidiana root and bark extracts were evaluated by various antioxidant tests, including DPPH radical-scavenging, nitric oxide-scavenging, superoxide anion radical-scavenging, and ABTS radical-scavenging assays, and superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity and reducing power analysis, along with the determination of total phenolic and flavonoid contents. Both the extracts showed strong antioxidant activities by these testing methods. Ulmus davidiana root extract possessed strong reducing power and nitric oxide-scavenging activity, and high scavenging activities against free radicals including the superoxide anion, and the ABTS and DPPH radicals, but a weaker scavenging activity of SOD. In contrast, the Ulmus davidiana bark extract exhibited a strong SOD-like activity, but all the other activities were weak. It was observed that the total phenolic and flavonoid contents of the Ulmus davidiana root extract were higher than those of the Ulmus davidiana bark extract.
