  • This study compared the morphological and molecular characteristics of the two Pampus spp. in Korea, Japan and China to clarify the long-confused taxonomic status of the two Korean pomfrets named as "Byeong-eo" and "Deok-dae". Among them "Byeong-eo" was identified as Pampus punctatissimus in having the following morphological traits: patch of wavy ridges extending beyond the anterior tip of the pectoral fin, the groove on the lower ridge of gill cover absent, and the number of vertebrae 34. On the other hand, "Deok-dae" was identified as Pampus argenteus in having the following morphological traits: patch of wavy ridges not reaching to the anterior tip of the pectoral fin, the groove on the lower ridge of gill cover reaching to the lower jaw, and the number of vertebrae 38~42. In addition, "Byeong-eo" almost corresponded to P. punctatissimus from Japan in the mitochondrial DNA cytochrome c oxidase subunit I sequences (genetic distance=0.1%), while "Deokdae" showed genetic distance of 0.3% when compared to P. argenteus from China. Our comprehensive results suggest the validify of P. punctatissimus for "Byeong-eo", and P. argenteus for "Deok-dae".

  • The fish fauna from the Yellow Sea was reviewed based on the published materials from Korea and China. As a results, author confirmed 389 species belonging to 257 genera, 123 families and 27 orders. Among them, the ascertained species in the western coast of Korean were 233 species belonging to 161 genera, 80 families and 20 orders, and those distributed in the Chinese water were 300 species belonging to 213 genera, 115 families and 27 orders. The largest fish group in this area was order Perciformes having 164 species belonging to 114 genera and 51 families, followed by order Scorpaeniformes comprising 45 species belong to 27 genera and 11 families, and order Pleuronectiformes having 34 species belong to 24 genera and 5 families. The important species in Korea economically were families Rajidae, Anguillidae, Clupeidae, Engraulidae, Scorpaenidae, Serranidae, Platycephalidae, Sciaenidae, Mugilidae, Trichiruridae, Stromateidae, Cynoglossidae, Pleuronectidae, Tetraodontidae. There were 9 endemic species in the westernsea of Korea : Neosalanx jordani, Pseudosciaena poliactis, Repomucenus koreanus, Repomucenus leucopoecilus, Achanthogobius elongata, Scartelaos sp., Cynoglossus joyneri, Takifugu flavidus and Takifugu obscurus.

  • Genetic variation and relationship of two wild (Pampus argenteus and P. echinogaster) and one cultured (P. chinesis) pomfret fish belonging to the genus Pampus were assessed. Specimens were collected from Korea and China and subjected to amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) DNA fingerprinting. Four primer combinations generated a total of 304 DNA fragments ranging from 153 to 251 bands. Polymorphism and genetic diversity of cultured P. chinensis (22.9% and 0.038) were significantly lower than the two wild species of P. argenteus (93.6% and 0.311) and P. echinogaster (94.0% and 0.290). Genetic distance ranged from 0.335 (P. argenteus and P. echinogaster) to 0.646 (P. argenteus and P. chinensis) and showed a congeneric relationship within this genus. Twenty one of specific AFLP markers from four primer combinations bands were produced. These results suggest that AFLP polymorphism may be a useful marker for genetic identification among the three species studies here.

  • Investigations were made on population biology of Pampus echinogaster (Basilewsky, 1855) in the coastal areas of Korea, Yellow Sea, between August 2005 and July 2006. Population structure was not significantly different between male and females. Monthly variation of gonadosomatic index (GSI) of both sexes defined spawning period extending from March through July. A similar pattern was also observed in change at maturity stages. For males and females GSI was positively correlated with hepatosomatic index (HSI). Fecundity, ranging from 41,250 to 103,610 eggs, was related to body size, indicating that body size is the useful determinant of fecundity. The sexual maturity ($L_{50}$) was estimated as 14.98 cm TL for males and 19.32 cm TL for females. Parameters of growth estimated by the modified von Bertalanffy growth function model showed that the values of $L_{\infty}$ and K for combined data were 39.12 cm TL and 0.65 $yr^{-1}$. The growth performance index of this study (2.75) was higher than that of the previous study (2.45). This difference could be attributed to sampling method. The recruitment patterns indicated one normally distributed group. Percentage of the recruitment was 51.04% in the spawning season and the highest in August (19.78%).
