  • Cyclical changes in the fine structures of endometrial stroma of guinea pig during the estrous cycle were studied by electron microscopy. Cytochemical studies were made in order to investigate the ultrastructural localization of the acid phosphatase, alkaline phosphatase and ATPase in these cells. The results obtained are as follows: 1. During estrus collagen fibers were most abundant in the stroma. The stromal cells showed increases in the number of several cytoplasmic organelles, especially the rough endoplasmic reticulum was significantly increased and the structures were greatly differentiated. 2. Many cytoplasmic processes and cell debris have been distributed in the stroma of metestrus. The distributions were increased and degenerated mitochondria were observed during diestrus. 3. Cytochemical studies indicated that during metestrus and diestrus acid phosphatase activities were localized in the degenerating collagen fibers. Alkaline phosphatase activities were weak in the collegen fibers during proestrus and estrus which intense activities were localized around the cell membrane during metestrus and diestrus. ATPase activities were present on the cell membrane and intercellular space of stromal cell during proestrus and estrus.

  • In the present paper author investigated the symptom, pathogenic fungus and pathogenicity of Endothia canker of Carpinus laxiflora in Korea, and made clear the indistinct discription on its pathogen in the past. 1. The pathogen is identified as Endothia fluens (Schw.) Shear et Stevens. The discription is recorded as follows: Stromata cortical, erumpent, spherical or conical, outer yellowish-brown and inner yellowish, 0.5 to 2.5 mm in diameter; perithecia irregularly embeded in the bottom of stroma, 7 to 23 in a stroma usually spherical to elliptical or irregular, 235 to $370{\mu}$ in diameter, with black slender necks; each neck open the papilliate ostiole to the surface, about 250 to $400{\mu}$ in length; asci clavate or fusoid, colorless, 31.16 to 42.64 by 6.54 to $8.20{\mu}$ in size, average 37.02 by $6.84{\mu}$, with 8 ascospores in double line; ascospores elliptical, ovate or cylindrical, with rounded ends, hyaline, 1-septate, not constrict at the septum, 6.51 to 9.30 by 3.16 to $3.72{\mu}$, average 7.61 by $3.44{\mu}$ in size; pycnidia formed abundantly in stroma. spherical at first but later irregular large cavity by fussing each other; pycnospores oblong or rod-shaped, hyaline, non-septate, 3.8 by $1.9{\mu}$ in size; spore-horn formed abundantly under moist condition. 2. The pathogen is wound parasite invading the hosts through the wound. But after the infection is established, expanding the disease lesion is swiftly vigorus.

  • Background: The tumor-stroma ratio (TSR) represents the percentage of neoplastic cell components compared to the combined area of neoplastic cells and the surrounding tumor-induced stroma. A low TSR (predomination of stromal component) has been demonstrated to be an independent adverse prognostic factor in cancers of several organs. In cervical carcinoma patients, TSR has been evaluated in only one previous study with different histological types. The present study aimed to assess the prognostic value of TSR in early stage cervical cancer patients with adenocarcinoma histology only. Materials and Methods: Histological slides of patients with early stage (IB-IIA) cervical adenocarcinoma who underwent surgical treatment between January 2003 and December 2011 were reviewed. Patients who had received preoperative chemotherapy were excluded. TSR was categorized as low (<50%) and high (${\geq}50%$). Correlations between TSR and clinicopathological variables were evaluated. Prognostic values of TSR and other variables were estimated using Cox's regression. Results: Of 131 patients; 38 (29.0%) had low TSR and 93 (71.0%) had high TSR. The patients with low TSR had significantly higher proportions of deep cervical stromal invasion (outer third of wall, p=0.011; residual stroma less than 3 mm, p=0.008) and parametrial involvement (p=0.026). Compared to the patients with high TSR, those with low TSR tended to have lower 5-year disease-free survival rate (83.8% versus 88.9%) and overall survival rate (85.6% versus 90.3%), although the differences were not statistically significant. Low TSR was significantly associated with decreased overall survival in univariate analysis (HR 2.7; 95% CI 1.0-7.0; p=0.041), but not in multivariate analysis. TSR was not significantly associated with decreased disease-free survival. Conclusions: Low TSR is associated with decreased overall survival in patients with early stage cervical adenocarcinoma treated by surgery. However, it was not found to be an independent prognostic predictor in this study.

  • Chloroplasts isolated from Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni leaves contained an enzyme activity which catalyzed hydroxylation of ent-kaurenoic acid (ent-kaur-16-en-19-oic acid; ent-KA) to steviol (ent-13-hydroxy kaur-16-en-19-oic acid), the diterpenoid carboxylic alcohol which is the aglycone of sweet stevioside-related glycosides. $[^(14)C]-methylated$ ent-KA was used to localize ent-KA hydroxylase. $[^(14)C]-methyl-KA$ was most actively was transformed into methyl-steviol in chloroplast. The enzymatic activity was found in stroma fraction but not in thylakoid membrane in Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni. However, ent-KA 13-hydroxylase activity was not detected in stroma fraction of either Spinacia oleracea and Solidago altissima. The reaction products using $[^(14)C]-methyl-KA$ were purified and identified on TLC autoradiogram. The hydroxylation of ent-KA from stromal protein to form steviol required NADPH and oxygen. FAD and riboflavin stimulated the enzyme activity 1.5-and 1.7-fold, respectively. It also turned out that the activity of this enzyme using methyl-KA as a substrate was 16.7% that of ent-KA. The purified ent-KA 13-hydroxylase did not act on t-cinnamic acid, 4-hydroxyphenyl acetic acid, choline and resorcinol, known as monooxygenase and hydroxylase substrates.

  • Bone marrow stroma is a complex tissue encompassing a number of cell types and supports hematopiesis, differentiation of erythreid, nyel and lymphoid lineages, and also maintains undifferentiated hematopoietic stem cells. Marrow-derived stem cells were composed of two populations, namely, hematopoietic stem cells that can differentiate into blood elements and mesenchymal stem cells that can give rise to connective tissues such as bone, cartilage, muscle, tendon, adipose and stroma. Differentiation requires environmental factors and unique intracellular signaling. For example, $TGF-{\beta}$ or BMP2 induces osteoblastic differentiation of mesenchymal stem are very exciting. However, the intrinsic controls involved in differentiation of stem cells are yet to be understood properly in order to exploit the same. This review presents an overview of the recent developments made in mesenchymal stem cell research with respect to osteogenesis.

  • Carcinosarcoma is an unusual and rarest neoplasm in man, consisting of carcinomatous parenchyme and sarcomatous stroma. Two clinical types of carcinosarcoma were present. One type of tumor was centrally located [endobronchial type], infrequent metastasis, and better prognosis than parenchymal type. The other type was peripherally located [parenchymal type], frequent metastasis, and poor prognosis. The histogenesis of carcinosarcoma is many hypothesis, but controversial; 1] sarcomatous degeneration of stroma, 2] intermingling of simultaneously arising carcinoma & sarcoma, 3] multiple primary tumor, 4] blastomatous changes in hamartoma, 5] stromal reaction to squamous cell carcinoma, 6] true & collision carcinosarcoma. In this case, 52 year-old male patient was hospitalized due to intermittent hemoptysis & known pulmonary lesions. Since 1968, chest PA showed round haziness within cyst & multiple cyst on RUL & RLL. Radical pneumonectomy was performed and histopathology showed carcinosarcoma, surrounded by bronchial epithelium. The patient maintain general well-being without clinical evidence of recurrence till now.

  • Antisera to ox red blood cells were prepared by injection of ox red blood cell stroma without adjuvant in outbred white rabbits. Purified IgM fraction for T-cell subset assay was obtained from these rabbit anti-ox red blood cell stroma antisera by precipitation with 50% saturated ammonium sulphate followed by DEAE-Cellulose chromatography and Sephadex G-200 gel filtration. The serological identification of purified IgM fraction was achieved by immunoelectrophoresis with guinea pig antiserum against rabbit anti-ox red blood cell IgM antibody.

  • Lymphoepithelial carcinoma, also known as malignant lymphoepithelial lesion or lymphoepithelioma, is a rare tumor in salivary glands. Lymphoepithelial carcinoma has a characteristic histological findings comprising irregularly-shaped nests of malignant epithelial cells within a lymphocyte-rich stroma, occasionally forming lymphoid follicles. We recently experienced a case of fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) of lymphoepithelial carcinoma of parotid gland in a 61-year-old male. The FNAC yielded a hypercellular smear of many irregular clusters of malignant epithelial cells in the background of lymphoid stroma.

  • Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is a form of neoplasm that origins from the epithelial surface of many organs. Ocular occurrence in small animals is rare, especially in the central cornea without the involvement of limbus or conjunctiva. In the current case, a 10-year-old, spayed female Shih-Tzu was presented with a central corneal mass. Through an ophthalmic examination the sign of corneal scarring around the mass was found. Pink fleshy lesion that protruded outward was removed through superficial keratectomy. The mass with the size of $8.5{\times}6.5$ millimeter was histopathologically diagnosed as corneal SCC infiltrating not only the epithelium, but also the superficial corneal stroma with surrounding superficial lymphoplasmacytic and neutrophilic chronic keratitis. Also, the adjacent, non-affected corneal epithelium was markedly hyperplastic and keratinized; the adjacent stroma was moderately vascularized and fibrotic. The pulse-dose therapy using 1% topical 5-flourouracil were applied for five cycles. The tumor has not recurred through nine months of follow-up time.
