Development of quality monitoring system using thickness gauge, width gauge, themometer for a rolling operation in hot rolling mill plant (열연공장의 압연공정 두께계 폭계 온도계를 이용한 품질모니터링 시스템 개발)

  • Today, hot rolled mill plant are currently operating 24 hours a day. The main processes of hot-rolled steel mill are Reheating Furnace, Roughing Mill, Fishing Mill and the Down Coiler. In the process checking over the thickness and width of rolled material, temperature control is an important factor. It is quite often the cause of the work breakdown and find a bad elements for product. After the shipping out the product, when a claim occurs requires an investigation. In each process of the conventional thickness gauge, width, and thermometer. Operation by an independent data acquisition and this monitoring is problematic and straining of the operator. The monitoring process the data of each function and incorporate monitoring results can also check future work. The installation of this system will improve our efficiency and productivity. In the rolling process by developing more efficient operating quality monitoring system, this will be made possible.

Design of the anvil shape in sizing press for decrease of the defect generated width reduction (사이징 프레스에서 폭 압하 공정중 결함 감소를 위한 엔빌의 형상설계)

  • Generally, the vertical roll process is used to achieve extensive width reduction in hot strip mill. However, it is difficult to avoid the defects such as dog-bone and seam-defect. The sizing press has been developed in response to the defects mentioned above. Especially, this study is carried out to investigate the deformation of slab by two-step sizing press. The deformation behavior in the width sizing process is more favorable than that in conventional vertical rolling edger. The objective of this study is to determine the optimal anvil shape parameters in the sizing press with two-step die from the viewpoint of edge-seam length. In general, the edge-seam defect occurs parallel to the rolling direction at both edges in horizontal rolling process after sizing press. The optimal combination of the parameters is determined by FE-simulation and Artificial Neural Network (ANN). The slab deformation in sizing press with convex anvil is analyzed by FE-simulation. The most suitable profile of the anvil is also discussed fur the improvement of trimming loss because of the side seam defect by FE-simulation and ANN.

Improvement of Cooling Technology through Atmosphere Gas Management

  • The production of advanced high strength steels requires the improvement of cooling technology. The use of high cooling rates allows relatively low levels of expensive alloying additions to ensure sufficient hardenability. In classical annealing and hot-dip galvanizing lines a mixing station is used to provide atmosphere gas containing 3-5% hydrogen and 97-95% nitrogen in the various sections of the furnace, including the rapid cooling section. Heat exchange enhancement in this cooling section can be insured by the increased hydrogen concentration. Drever International developed a patented improvement of cooling technology based on the following features: pure hydrogen gas is injected only in the rapid cooling section whereas the different sections of the furnace are supplied with pure nitrogen gas; the control of flows through atmosphere gas management allows to get high hydrogen concentration in cooling section and low hydrogen content in the other furnace zones. This cooling technology development insures higher cooling rates without additional expensive hydrogen gas consumption and without the use of complex sealing equipments between zones. In addition reduction in electrical energy consumption is obtained. This atmosphere control development can be combined with geometrical design improvements in order to get optimised cooling technology providing high cooling rates as well as reduced strip vibration amplitudes. Extensive validation of theoretical research has been conducted on industrial lines. New lines as well as existing lines, with limited modifications, can be equipped with this new development. Up to now this technology has successfully been implemented on 6 existing and 7 new lines in Europe and Asia.

  • Recently, AC variable-speed motors are used for many steel rolling mill drive systems, because of their low maintenance and enhanced control performance. We have been applied GTO inverters for these AC motor drive systems since 1993. We have developed world largest 6-inch diameter GTO and large capacity 3-level GTO inverter up to 20000(kVA). As an example, in this paper, we describe the main circuit, system arrangement and control features of the 6-inches GTO inverters to drive rougher mills for hot strip mill of Pohang Iron & Steel Co., Ltd. The motor capacity is 6000(kW), and it's overload is 250(%).

  • 최근 환경과 에너지에 대한 관심이 증대됨에 따라 차체의 경량화를 위한 고합금계 알루미늄 합금의 연구가 활발히 진행되고 있다. 특히 5000계 알루미늄 합금은 비중이 낮을 뿐만 아니라 Mg의 첨가에 의해 높은 강도 및 성형성을 얻을 수 있기 때문에 자동차용 판재로 많은 주목을 받고 있다. 현재 사용되는 대부분의 알루미늄 합금판재는 DC주조법과 추가적인 압연공정으로 제조되기 때문에 경제성 문제와 낮은 냉각속도로 인한 금속학적인 문제를 갖는다. 그러나 DC주조법과는 달리 쌍롤 박판주조법은 용탕으로부터 직접 판재를 제조하기 때문에 경제적이며 효율적인 주조공정이다. 또한 냉각속도가 빠르기 때문에 비교적 주조편석이 적고 전반적인 미세조직이 균일하여 고합금계 알루미늄 합금 판재제조에 매우 유용하게 응용될 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 쌍롤 박판주조법으로 고합금계 알루미늄 합금 판재를제조하고, 제조된 합금의 열간압연 및 열처리 조건에 따른 기계적 특성을 비교 및 평가하였다. 또한 미세조직 및 집합조직을 분석함으로써 고합금계 알루미늄 합금 판재의 실용화 가능성을 평가하였다.

The Cause of Vibration at Finishing Stands in a Hot Strip Mill (열간 사상압연기에서의 진동 원인)

  • Chatter vibration of a rolling machine in steel plants has a significant effect on thickness quality of the products. The cause and mechanism of the mill chattering is addressed through measurement of vibration and dynamic torque. An FFT system and an FM telemetry system are employed to collect data at several locations of possible damages. The results reveal the followings as sources of the mill vibration. The first is defects in roller bearings of a work roll chock. The second is instability of an oil film bearing in a backup roll chock, which has been investigated with a theoretical model describing the phenomenon. Dynamic torque is not the direct cause of mill vibration but rather influenced by the vibration. Appropriate treatment methods are suggested to address each of the above sources.

  • A computer program has been developed for analyzing the two-dimensional unsteady conservation equations for transport phenomena in the ool region of direct rolling with semi-solid metal in order to describe the velocity and temperature, and the solidification process of the semi-solid metal. The energy equations of cooling roll is solved simultaneously with semi-solid metal in order consider heat transfer through the cooling roll. The FDM(finite difference method) and FEM(finite element method) are used in region of pool and roll, respsctively, to reduce computing time and to improve accuracy of calculation. In the present study, influence of solid fraction and casting speed are investigated in a point of view of strip formability with semi-solid metal.

Identification of Linear Model of Tandem Cold Mill Using N4SID Algorithm (N4SID 알고리즘을 이용한 연속 냉간 압연기의 선형모델 규명)

  • This paper identifies a linear time-invariant mathematical model of each stand of a five-stand tandem cold mill to design a robust $H_\infty$ thickness controller by applying input and output data sets to N4SID (Numerical algorithms for Subspace State Space System Identification) method. The input-output data sets describe interstand interference in the process of tandem cold rolling and are obtained from a nonlinear simulator of the tandem cold mill. In result, it is shown that the identified model well approximates the nonlinear model than a Taylor linearized model. Furthermore, uncertainties including roll eccentricity and incoming strip variation are quantitatively analyzed from the plot of maximum singular values.

  • A study on corrosion and adhesion properties of evaporated Zn-Cr films were conducted on steel strip by two-source evaporater. Corrosion resistance of Zn-Cr coated steel was evaluated by salt spray test in 5% NaCl. Adhesion property of Zn-Cr films on steel substrate was evaluated by tape test after $180^\circC$ bending. Adhesion was improved with increasing the Cr content and reached the maximum at the Cr content of 6 to 8wt%. Corrosion resistance was enhanced with increasing the Cr content and improved by rolling Zn-Cr coated specimen, as a post-treatment.

  • 최근 자동차용 강판을 대체하기 위한 재료로서 알루미늄 합금에 대한 관심이 높아지고 있다. 알루미늄 합금은 철강 재료에 비해 비강도가 높으며 재활용이 용이하고 내식성이 뛰어난 활용 가치가 높은 소재이다. 하지만 기존의 강판을 알루미늄 합금으로 대체하기 위해서는 높은 경제성, 강도 및 성형성이 요구되고 있는 현실이다. 따라서 고강도 알루미늄 합금 판재를 경제적으로 제조하기 위한 제조 공정기술 및 후가공 기술의 개발이 필요하다. 본 연구에서는 기존의 쌍롤 박판주조법에 비대칭 노즐을 이용하여 높은 주조 속도를 유지하면서도 중심 편석 및 열간 균열을 완화시켜 첨가되는 용질 원소의 양을 증가시켰다. 제조한 다양한 조성을 가진 알루미늄 합금 판재의 후속 압연성, 기계적 특성 및 성형성을 평가하기 위하여 미세조직 및 집합조직을 분석하였으며 이에 따른 실용화 가능성을 평가하였다.
