  • Since the ceramic/metal joints is joined at high temperature, the residual stress will develop during when cooled from bonding temperature due to remarkable difference of thermal expansion coefficient between creamic and metal. Moreover, the edge of jointed interface makes singular stress field in the ceramic/metal joints and this singular stress field much influences on the strength of joints. In this study, The influence of residual stress, mechanical load and repeat thermal sysle was estimated in the ceramic/metal joints. According to this influence, the change of singular stress field was analyed and then strength test, X-ray measurement are performed.

  • In order to analyze the effect of leveling conditions on residual stress evolution of hot rolled high strength steels, a numerical algorithm was developed. It was able to implement the effect of plastic fraction (intermesh) in leveling, line tension, work roll bending, and initial residual stress and curl distribution. The effect of work roll bending on residual stress and curl were studied by using the developed program. The validity of simulated results was verified from comparison with the experimentally measured residual stress and curl in a sheet.

  • Effects of contact damage and residual stress for two kinds of dental restorative layered ceramics, porcelain/alumina and porcelain/zirconia bilayers, were observed with Hertzian and Vickers indentation methods. Indentation stress-strain behavior of each material, strength degradation of the coating material, and crack propagation behavior in the coating layer after Vickers indentation were examined by an optical microscope. As a result, porcelain as coating materials showed the classical brittleness. It was inferred that damage and strength in two bilayer system were dependent on thermal expansion mismatch between the coating material and the substrate, which affected the strength degradation. Residual stress resulting from thermal expansion mismtch was formed in the coating layer, and specially in the case of porcelain/zirconia, residual stress was eliminated as coating thickness decreased.

  • Strength test using strain rosette gage have been conducted to investigate safety of an auxiliary tank in a high-pressure air compressor. Thickness of auxiliary tanks in 6063-T5 aluminum at toy are 9mm and 17mm. The result of strength test make a comparison the design in strength of materials by nominal stress and the design in fracture mechanics with consideration of crack size. Summarizing the result: Comparing with the safe working pressure of the strength test and that of the design method in strength of materials by nominal stress with the experimental values, it makes difference 11% and 39% for 9mm and 17mm thickness of auxiliary tanks, respectively, and that of the design method by fracture mechanics, it makes difference 4% and 5% for them, respectively. It is confirmed that the design by fracture mechanics is more economical and safe design than the design in strength of materials by nominal stress.

  • An experimental study has been carried out on square plain concrete (PC) and reinforced concrete (RC) columns strengthened with carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets. A total of 78 specimens were loaded to failure in axial compression and investigated in both axial and transverse directions. Slenderness of the columns, number of wrap layers and concrete strength were the test parameters. Compressive stress, axial and hoop strains were recorded to evaluate the stress-strain relationship, ultimate strength and ductility of the specimens. Results clearly demonstrate that composite wrapping can enhance the structural performance of square columns in terms of both maximum strength and ductility. On the basis of the effective lateral confining pressure of composite jacket and the effective FRP strain coefficient, new peak stress equations were proposed to predict the axial strength and corresponding strain of FRP-confined square concrete columns. This model incorporates the effect of the effective circumferential FRP failure strain and the effect of the effective lateral confining pressure. The results show that the predictions of the model agree well with the test data.

  • Inner part of FRP specimen was made unidirectionally by pultrusion method and outer part of FRP was made by filament winding method to study the effect of fiber orientatons on the strength of FRP. The strength of bending and compression was simulated and evaluated. The results of simulated strength and evaluated strength were different greately each other. The stress which affect the feature of FRP was simulated to investigate the difference of the results between simulation and evaluation Shear stresses were investigated to the main stress to affect the fracture of FRP.

  • In this study, effect of steel fibers on toughness and some mechanical properties of concrete were investigated. Hooked-end steel fibers were used in concrete samples with three volume fractions (${\nu}_f$) of 0.5%, 0.75% and 1% and for two aspect ratios (l/d) of 45 and 65. Compressive and flexural tensile strength and modulus of elasticity of concrete were determined for cylindrical, cubic and prismatic samples at the age of 7 and 28 days. The stress-strain curves of standard cylindrical specimens were studied to determine the effect of steel fibers on toughness of steel-fiber-reinforced concrete (SFRC). In addition, the relationship between compressive strength and the flexural tensile strength of SFRC were reported. Finally, a simple model was proposed to generate the stress-strain curves for SFRC based on strains corresponding to the peak compressive strength and 60% of peak compressive stress. The proposed model was shown to provide results in good correlation with the experimental results.

  • The requirements of getting spring steel with higher fatigue strength have been increased to achieve the weight reduction of a vehicle. As the possible increment in fatigue strength by using the conventional shot peening treatment is found to be limited, it is necessary to modify the shot peening treatment. In this study, to investigate the effects of warm shot peening on increasing fatigue strength, tests are conducted on spring steel SAE9524. By the results of rotating bending fatigue tests, the fatigue strength increases up to 23.8% in warm shot peening specimens at $200^{\circ}C$ compared with conventional shot peening. The major reason why the warm shot peening is effective to the improvement of fatigue strength is the increment of the compressive residual stress, which can be effectively formed by shot peening under the condition of warm temperature than room temperature.

  • In this study, to investigate the effects of 2-step shot peening at the surface of spring steel, tests are conducted on spring steel and shot peened specimens. Various tests are accomplished to evaluate mechanical properties influenced by shot peening process, and fatigue tests are also performed to evaluate the improvement of fatigue strength. And then the residual stresses are examined. The mechanical properties of material did not change so much by shot peening. However, the fatigue strength of notched specimen remarkably increased. In the case of 1-step shot peening, fatigue strength increased by about 20% than unpeened specimen. Especially, in the case of 2-step shot peening, fatigue strength increased by about 40%, because the residual compressive stress at surface was higher than that of 1-step shot peened specimen. The fatigue strength and life are closely related to the value and position of maximum compressive residual stress by shot peening.
