Restorative procedures can lead to weakening tooth due to reduction and alteration of tooth structure. It is essential to prevent fractures to conserve tooth. The resistance to fracture of the restored tooth may be influenced by many factors, among these are the cavity dimension and the physical properties of the restorative material. The placement of direct composite resin restorations has generally been found to have a strengthening effect on the prepared teeth. It is the purpose of this investigation to study the relationship between the cavity isthmus and the fracture resistance of a tooth in composite resin restorations. In this study, MO cavity was prepared on maxillary first premolar. Three dimensional finite element models were made by serial photographic method and isthmus(1/4, 1/3, 1/2 of intercuspal distance) were varied. Two types of model(B and R model) were developed. B model was assumed perfect bonding between the restoration and cavity wall and R model was left unfilled. A load of 500N was applied vertically at the first node from the lingual slope of the buccal cusp tip. This study analysed the displacement, 1 and 2 direction normal stress and strain with FEM software ABAQUS Version 5.2 and hardware IRIS 4D/310 VGX Work-station. The results were as follows : 1. Displacement of buccal cusp in R model occurred and increased as widening of the cavity, and displacement in B model was little and not influenced by cavity width. 2. There was a significant decrease of stress resulting in increase of fracture resistance in B model when compared with R model. 3. With the increase of the isthmus width, B model showed no change in the stress and strain. In R model, the stress and strain increased both in the area of buccal-pulpal line angle and the buccal side of marginal ridge, therefore the possibility of crack increased. 4. The stress and strain were distributed evenly on the tooth in B model, but in R model, were concentrated on the buccal side of the distal marginal ridge and buccal-pulpal line angle, therefore the possibility of fracture increased.

Elastic and elasto-plastic stress analyses of AlN/Cu and AlN/W pints produced by active-metal brazing method using Ag-Cu-Ti insert-metal were performed with use of Finite-Element-Method(FEM). The results of stress analyses were compared with those from the pint strength tests and the observations of fracture behaviors. It was shown that a remarkably larger maximum principal stress is built in the AlN/Cu pint compared to the A1N/ W joint. Especially, the stress concentration with tensile component was confirmed at the free surface close to the bonded interface of AlN/Cu. The elasto-plastic analysis under consideration of stress relaxation effect of Ag-Cu-Ti insert possessing a so-called 'soft-metal effect' showed that the insert leads to a lowering of maximum principal stress in AlNiCu pint, even though an increase of the insert thickness above 100$\mu\textrm{m}$ could not bring its further decrease. The maximum pint strengths measured by shear test were 52 and 108 MPa for AlNiCu and AlN/W pints. respectively. Typical fractures of AlN/Cu pints occurred in a form of 'dome' which initiated from the free surface of AlN close to the bonded interface and proceeded towards the AlN inside forming a large angle. AlN/W pints were usually fractured at AlN side along the interface of AlN/insert-metal.
At Aspo hard rock laboratory in Sweden, an in-situ heater experiment called "$\"{A}"{s}"{p}"{o}$ Pillar Stability Experiment (APSE)" is prepared to assess capability to predict spatting and stability in a rock mass between deposition holes for radioactive waste. To Predict reasonably fracturing process at rock pillar under a planned configuration before testing, a boundary element code FRACOD has been applied for modelling. The code has been improved to simulate explicitly fracture evolution both at rock boundaries and in intact rocks. A new inverse stress reconstruction technique using boundary element has been also developed to transfer stress field by excavation and thermal loading into the FRACOD model. This article presents the results from predictive modelling far the planned in-situ test condition. Excavation induced stresses might cause slight fracturing in the pillar walls. Typical shear fractures have been initiated and propagated near central pillar walls during 120 days of heating, but overall rock mass remained stable under the considered configuration. The effects of pre-existing joints and properties of fractures are also discussed. It is found from the results that FRACOD can properly model essential rock spatting and propagation at deep tunnels and boreholes.at deep tunnels and boreholes.
The deep geological repository of high-level radioactive waste shall be designed to meet the safety objective set in the form of radiation dose or corresponding risk to protect human and the environment from radiation exposure. Engineering feasibility and conformity with the safety objective of the facility conceptual design can be demonstrated by comparing the assessment result using the computational model for scenario(s) describing the radionuclide release and transport from repository to biosphere system. In this study, as the preliminary study for developing the high-level radioactive waste disposal facility in Korea, we reviewed and analyzed the entire list of FEPs and how to handle each FEP from a general point of view, which are selected for the geosphere region in the radiological safety assessment performed for the license application of the KBS-3 type deep geological repository in Finland and Sweden. In Finland, five FEPs (i.e., stress redistribution, creep, stress redistribution, erosion and sedimentation in fractures, methane hydrate formation, and salt exclusion) were excluded or ignored in the radionuclide release and transport assessment. And, in Sweden, six FEPs (i.e., creep, surface weathering and erosion, erosion/sedimentation in fractures, methane hydrate formation, radiation effects (rock and grout), and earth current) were not considered for all time frames and earthquake out of a total of 25 FEPs for the geosphere. Based on these results, an FEP list (draft) for the geosphere was derived, and the relative importance of each item was evaluated for conducting the radiological safety assessment of the domestic deep geological disposal facility. Since most of information on the disposal facility in Korea has not been determined as of now, it is judged that all FEP items presented in Table 3 should be considered for the radiological safety assessment, and the relative importance derived from this study can be used in determining whether to apply each item in the future.
Statement of problem: Problems such as loosening and fractures of retained screws and fracture of implant fixture have been frequently reported in implant prosthesis. Purpose: Implant has weak mechanical properties against lateral loading compared to vertical occlusal loading, and therefore, stress analysis of implant fixture depending on its material and geometric features is needed. Material and methods: Total 28 of external hexed implants were divided into 7 of 4 groups; Group A (3i, FULL $OSSEOTITE^{(R)}$Implant), Group B (Nobelbiocare, $Br{\aa}nemark$$System^{(R)}$Mk III Groovy RP), Group C (Neobiotec, $SinusQuick^{TM}$ EB), Group D (Osstem, US-II). The type III gold alloy prostheses were fabricated using adequate UCLA gold abutments. Fixture, abutment screw, and abutment were connected and cross-sectioned vertically. Hardness test was conducted using MXT-$\alpha$. For fatigue fracture test, with MTS 810, the specimens were loaded to the extent of 60-600 N until fracture occurred. The fracture pattern of abutment screw and fixture was observed under scanning electron microscope. A comparative study of stress distribution and fracture area of abutment screw and fixture was carried out through finite element analysis Results: 1. In Vicker's hardness test of abutment screw, the highest value was measured in group A and lowest value was measured in group D. 2. In all implant groups, implant fixture fractures occurred mainly at the 3-4th fixture thread valley where tensile stress was concentrated. When the fatigue life was compared, significant difference was found between the group A, B, C and D (P<.05). 3. The fracture patterns of group B and group D showed complex failure type, a fracture behavior including transverse and longitudinal failure patterns in both fixture and abutment screw. In Group A and C, however, the transverse failure of fixture was only observed. 4. The finite element analysis infers that a fatigue crack started at the fixture surface. Conclusion: The maximum tensile stress was found in the implant fixture at the level of cortical bone. The fatigue fracture occurred when the dead space of implant fixture coincides with jig surface where the maximum tensile stress was generated. To increase implant durability, prevention of surrounding bone resorption is important. However, if the bone resorption progresses to the level of dead space, the frequency of implant fracture would increase. Thus, proper management is needed.

The ball shear test was investigated in terms of the effects of test parameters, i.e., shear height and shear speed, with an experimental and non-linear finite element analysis for evaluating the solder joint integrity of area array packages. Two representative Pb-free solder compositions were examined in this work: Sn-3.5Ag-0.75Cu and In-48Sn. The substrate was a common SMD type with solder bond pad openings of 460 $\mu$m in diameter. The microstructural investigations were carried out using SEM, and the IMCs were identified with EDS. Shear tests were conducted with the two varying test parameters. It could be observed that increasing shear height, at fixed shear speed, has the effect of decreasing shear force for both Sn-3.5Ag-0.75Cu and In-48Sn solder joints, while the shear force increased with increasing shear speed at fixed shear height. Too high shear height could cause some undesirable effects on the test results such as unexpected high standard deviation values or shear tip sliding from the solder ball. The low shear height conditions were favorable for screening the type of brittle interfacial fractures or the degraded layers in the interfaces. The shear speed conditions were discussed with the stress analyses of the solder ball, and we cannot find any conspicuous finding which is related to optimum shear speed from the stress analyses.
Steel structures have a higher probability of being damaged by fatigue than by other causes of deterioration. As such, their maintenance to prevent fatigue damage is essential to sustain their safety and performance during their service period. In their maintenance, the current state of their fatigue cracks must be assessed to determine appropriate reinforcement methods and the suitable time intervals of periodic inspections when fatigue cracks are detected. Determining the crack growth rate is a successful method of predicting fractures, but it requires technical knowledge on fracture mechanics and experience in numerical methods and software for finite element analysis. In this study, a fatigue crack growth test on through-thickness cracked steel plates was conducted to assess the crack growth rate without superior technical knowledge and experience. The relationship between the Crack Opening Displacement (COD) and the crack growth rate was found in relatively long fatigue cracks.
It is seldom possible that geotechnical materials like rocks and concretes found without joints, cracks, or discontinuities. Thereby, the impact of micro-cracks on the mechanical properties of them is to be considered. In the present study, the effect of micro-crack on the failure mechanism of rock specimens under uniaxial compression was investigated experimentally. For this purpose, thermal stress was used to induce micro-cracks in the specimens. Several cylindrical and disk shape specimens were drilled from granite collected from Zanjan granite mine, Iran. Some of the prepared specimens were kept in room temperature and the others were heated by a laboratory furnace to different temperature levels (200, 400, 600, 800 and 1000 degree Celsius). During the experimental tests, Acoustic Emission (AE) sensors were used to monitor specimen failure at the different loading sequences. Also, Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) was used to distinguish the induced micro-crack by heating in the specimens. The fractographic analysis revealed that the thin sections heated to $800^{\circ}C$ and $1000^{\circ}C$ contain some induced micro-fractures, but in the thin sections heated to $200^{\circ}C$, $400^{\circ}C$ and $600^{\circ}C$ have not been observed any micro-fracture. In the next, a comprehensive experimental investigation was made to evaluate mechanical properties of heated and unheated specimens. Results of experimental tests showed that induced micro-cracks significantly influence on the failure mode of specimens. The specimens kept at room temperature failed in the splitting mode, while the failure mode of specimens heated to $800^{\circ}C$ are shearing and the specimens heated to $1000^{\circ}C$ failed in the spalling mode. On the basis of AE monitoring, it is found that with increasing of the micro-crack density, the ratio of the number of shear cracks to the number of tensile cracks increases, under loading sequences.

In the welded structure, the most dengerous section is welded parts and almost fractures of welded structure occur from welded parts. Accordingly, in other to prevents of fracture, it is important seeking the fracture behavior of welded parts. In this study as basic investigation of fracture behavior of welded parts, it is investigated that local distribution of fracture toughness and effect of multipass electrode welding, also effect of release of residual stress were investigated, as the subjected. material, the used steel having fatigue history and unused steel were selected. As the result of this study, it is dear that the base metal of unused steel and heat affected zone and weld metal are different each other in fracture toughness, and it seems clear that the weld metal may will become source of fracture because of it having the most low fracture toughness. Especially, in the case of crack occur in the used steel, it will be the most brittle section in the structure because of it having low fracture toughness then weld metal. It affirmation that, if welded parts has not flaw, the multi pass electrode welding effective to improve of fracture toughness, also release of residual stress is none effective to improve of fracture toughness in this study.
In this paper, finite element analyses for estimating the behavior of fractured femur just after the operation were carried out by using ABAQUS 6.71. A stainless steel bone plate and composite bone plates with various stacking angles were considered to find out the effect of bone plate properties on bone fracture healing. In order to simulate the actual state, contact conditions between the plate and bone and fractured bones were imposed on the finite element models and the whole analysis was divided by two steps; screw fastening step and load bearing step. The stress and strain distributions at the fracture site for the cases of the stainless steel and composite bone plates were analyzed and compared with. From the analyses it was found that the composite bone plate had potential advantages for effective bone fractures healing relieving stress shielding effect.
