Displacement fields and interface stresses are obtained by modifying the potential energy functional with a penalty function which enforces the continuity of stresses at the interface of two-materials. Based on the displacement field and the interface stresses, a new methodology to generate a continuous stress field over the entire domain including the interface of the dissimilar materials has been proposed by combining the L$^{2}$ projection method of stress-smoothing and the Loubignac's iterative method of improving the displacement field. Stress analysis was carried out on two examples which are made of highly dissimilar materials. As a result of the analysis, it is found that the proposed method provides improved continuity of the stress field over the entire domain as well as predicting accurate nodal stresses at the interface. In contrast, the conventional displacement-based finite element method provides significant stress discontinuties at the interfaces. In addition, it was found that the total strain energy evaluated from the improved continuous stress field converge to the exact value as increasing the number of iterations in the proposed method.
In this study, the coupled effects of magnetic field, stress and thermal field on gravity waves propagating in a liquid layer over a solid surface are discussed. Due to change in temperature, initial hydrostatic stress and magnetic field, the gravity-sound Rayleigh waves can propagate in the liquid-solid interface. Dispersion properties of waves are derived by using classical dynamical theory of thermoelasticity. The phase velocity of gravity waves influenced quite remarkably in the presence of initial stress parameter, magneto-thermoelastic coupling parameter in the half space. Numerical solutions are also discussed for gravity-Rayleigh waves. In the absence of temperature, stress and magnetic field, the obtained results are in agreement with classical results.
Superconducting field coils using a high-temperature superconducting (HTS) wires with high current density generate high magnetic field of 2 to 5 [T] and electromagnetic force (Lorentz force) acting on the superconducting field coils also become a very strong from the point of view of a mechanical characteristics. Because mechanical stress caused by these powerful electromagnetic force is one of the factors which worsens the critical current performance and structural characteristics of HTS wire, the mechanical stress analysis should be performed when designing the superconducting field coils. In this paper, as part of structural design of superconducting field coils for 17 MW class superconducting ship propulsion motor, mechanical stress acting on the superconducting field coils was analyzed and structural safety was also determined by the coupling analysis system that is consists of commercial electromagnetic field analysis program and structural analysis program.
The subsurface stress field caused by both normal loads and tangential loads has been evaluated using the rectangular patch solution. The effect of tangential loading on the subsurface stress field has been investigated in detail for both the cylinder-on-cylinder contact and a spur gear teeth contact. For the cylinder-on-cylinder contact, the subsurface stress fields are moved more to the direction of tangential loads and the positions where the maximum stress occur are getting closer to the surface with the increasing tangential loads. The subsurface stress fields of the gear teeth contact are expanded more widely to the direction of tangential loads with the increasing tangential loads. The friction coefficient of a gear teeth contact is low because they are operated in a lubricated condition, and therefore surface tractions in the EHL condition hardly affect on the subsurface stress field.
In this study, the porothermoelastic problem with the effect of the magnetic field and initial stress was investigated. We applied normal mode analysis to solve the resulting non-dimensional coupled equations. Numerical results for the displacements, temperature distribution, pore pressure, stresses, induced electric field and induced magnetic field distributions are presented graphically and discussed. The medium deformed because of thermal shock and due to the application of the magnetic field, there result an induced magnetic and an induced electric field in the medium. Numerical analyses are given graphically on the square (2D) and cubic (3D) domains to illustrate the effects of the porosity parameter, magnetic field and initial stress parameter on the physical variables.
Morphotropic tetragonal and rhombohederal phase boundary(MPB) in PZT system was calculated and the effect of mechanical stress and electric field on the MPB was examined using phenomenological thermodynamic theory proposed by Devonshire. Mechanical stress and electric field was calculated to change free energies of phases and shift MPB. The stable composition range of the phase, of which spontaneous strain and spontaneous polarization aligned to the direction of tensile stress or electirc field, was expanded.
The propagating crack problems under dynamic plane mode in orthotropic material is studied in this paper. To analyze the dynamic fracture problems in orthortropic material, it is important to know the dynamic stress components and dynamic displacement components around the crack tip. Therefore the dynamic stress components of dynamic stress field and dynamic displacement components of dynamic displacement field in the crack tip of orthotropic material under the dynamic load and the steady state in crack propagation were derived. When the crack propagation speed approachs to zero, the dynamic stress component and dynamic displacement components derived in this study are identical to the those of static state. In addition, the relationships between dynamic stress intensity factor and dynamic energy release rate are determinded by using the concept of crack closure closure energy with the dynamic stresses and represented according to physical properties of the orthotrophic material and crack speeds. The faster the crack velocity, the greater the stress value of stress components in crack tip. The stress value of the stress component of crack tip is greater when fiber direction coincides with the crack propagation than when fider direction is normal to the crack propagation.
The propagating crack problems under dynamic antiplane mode in orthotropic material is studied in this paper. To analyze the dynamic fracture problems by theoretical method or experimental method in orthotropic material, it is important to know the dynamic stress intensity factor in the vicinity of crack tip. Therefore the dynamic stress field and dynamic displacement field with dynamic stress intensity factor of orthotropic material in mode III were derived. When the crack propagation speed approachs to zero, the dynamic stress components and dynamic displacement components derived in this paper are identical to the those of static state. In addition, the relationships between dynamic stress intensity factor and dynamic energy release rate are determined by using the concept of crack closure energy with the dynamic stresses and dynamic displacements derived in this paper. Finally, the characteristics of crack propagation are studied with the properties of orthotropic material and crack speed. The variation of angle .alpha. between fiber direction and crack propagating direction and crack propagation speed fairly effect on stress component and displacement component in crack tip. The influence of crack propagation speed on the speed on the stress and displacement is greater in the case of .alpha.=90.deg. than in the case of .alpha.=0.deg. and the faster the crack propagation speed, the greater the stress value and displacement value.
Since the hydraulic fracturing field testing method was introduced first to Korean geotechnical engineers in 1994, there have been lots of progresses in a hardware system as well as an interpretation tool. The hydrofracturing system of first generation was the pipe-line type, and it has been developed to a wire-line system at their second generation. The current up-to-date system is more compact and is able to be operated by all-in-one system. With a progress in a hardware system, the software for analyzing in-situ stress regime has also been progressed. The shut-in pressure, which is the most ambiguous parameter to be obtained from hydrofracturing pressure curves, can now be acquired automatically from the various methods. While the hardware and software for hydrofracturing tests are being developed during the last decade, the author could accumulate the field test results which can cover the almost whole area of South Korea. Currently these field data are used widely in a feasibility study or a preliminary design step for tunnel construction in Korea. Regarding the difficulties in a site selection and a test performance for the in-situ stress measurement at an off-shore area, the in-situ stress regime obtained from the field experiences in the land area can be used indirectly for the design of a sub-sea tunnel. From the hydrofracturing stress measurements, the trend of magnitude and direction of in-situ stress field was shown identically with the geological information in Korea.
For cam and roller-follower contacting surfaces, the effect of tangential loading on the subsurface stress field at an elaso-hydrodynamic lubrication condition has been studied numerically. As tangential load increases, the subsurface stress field extended more widely to the direction of the tangential load. The positions of the maximum shear stress and the maximum effective stress are getting closer to the surface with the increasing tangential load. The tangential load at the elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication condition is of little consequence to the subsurface stress field.
