  • In the present work, characteristics of the flow in the cage of a steam turbine bypass control valve for thermal power plant are investigated. Experimental measurement for wall static pressure has been carried out to validate numerical solutions. And, the flowfield is analyzed by solving steady three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations. Shear stress transport (SST) model is used as turbulence closure. The effects of the flow area between stages of the cage on the pressure drop are also found.

  • This paper presents performance analysis of two-linked robot system using ER (electro rheological) valve actuators. An ER fluid consisting of soluble chemical starches (particles) and silicone oil is made and its field-dependent yield stress is experimentally distilled using electro-viscometer. From this result, the design parameters of ER valve are determined. Based on parameter study, an ER valve system is designed and manufactured. Furthermore, the measured pressure drop is compared with predicted one obtained from the Bingham model. Following the evaluation of field-dependent pressure drop of ER valve, a two-linked robot system with two ER valve actuators is then constructed and its governing equation of motion is derived. From this equation, PID controller is established. Consequently, control performances of the proposed two-linked robot system featuring ER valve are evaluated.

  • The drag reduction is the phenomenon that occurs only when the shear stress from the wall of pipe is beyond the critical point. The drag reduction increase as the molecular weight, concentration of the polymer and Reynolds number increase, but it is limited by Virk's maximum drag reduction asymptote. Because of the strong shear force for the polymer on the turbulent flow, the molecular weight and the drag reduction do not decrease. Such mechanical degradation of the polymer occurs in all polymer solvent systems. This paper is to identify and develop high performance polymer additives for fluid transportations with the benefits of turbulent drag reduction. In addition, drag reduction in vertical flow by measuring the pressure drop and local void fraction on vertical-up flow of close system is evaluated.

  • This study explores the influence of volume fraction of nanocrystals of Cu-Zr amorphous alloys on shear band formation. As the number of crystals with very tiny size increases, the strain localization, i.e. shear band, decreases without large drop of flow stress. The DPRs also depict no sudden drop and relatively high values. The strain state during the deformation represents a few shear bands at low volume fraction while there are no distinguishable shear bands at high volume fraction of nanocrystals.

  • In this paper, we describe the structural reinforcement approach of the throwing-type firefighter assistance robot which can be thrown into a fire site to monitor inside the place and search trapped people while ensuring a firefighter's safety. The reinforcement design is focused on high strength with low weight for the robot. The in-depth structural analysis of the platform is carried out to track down the weakest part, especially with the 1.8m height of drop test. The analysis is verified by comparing with the 1.8m height of the drop test of the throwing-type firefighter assistance robot. The optimal approach for improving the strength of the weakest part aims at topological equivalent and equivalently stress distributed shape.

  • The temperature distribution of the deposited droplet was predicted by using the finite element analysis and it was assumed that the droplet was axisymmetrical model. The analysis of residual stress was performed with the temperature data, which is obtained from the result. Axisymmetric droplet is deposited three times to consider the actual phenomenon of droplet deposition. The analysis of the temperature distribution is respectively performed whenever the axisymmetric droplet is laminated and the residual stresses of the laminated axisymmetric droplet are calculated with the value of the temperature distribution.

  • Run-Out-Table is the region between EDT and CT. Hot killed strip is cooled by air and water in ROT. In this procedure, phase transformation and shape deformation occur due to temperature drop. Because of un-ideal cooling condition, deformation of strip and non-uniform phase distribution come into existence. This phenomenon affects the strip property and lead th the existence of residual stress. And it exerts effects on the Coiling process, Coil Cooling process, and Un-coiling process. Through these process, the residual stresses of strip are more larger and unbalance of these stresses become more severe. Finite element (FE) based models for the analysises of non-steady state heat transfer and elastoplastic deformation are described in this investigation. The analysises of thermodynamics and phase transformation kinetics are suggested also. Using the ROT simulation result coiling process and coil cooling process simulations are carried out.

  • Domestic three-way catalyst satisfies exhaust gas conversion efficiency or pressure drop etc. but doesn't satisfy thermal durability. Thermal stress analysis for three-way catalyst was performed based on experimental temperature distribution. Thermal safety of three-way catalyst was estimated by safety factor. Aspect ratio variable had the most significant effect on thermal stress. Thickness variable had the least significant effect on thermal stress. Optimal conditions for premature failure prevention of three-way catalyst were as follows : (1) aspect ratio of three-way catalyst : 0.6:1 (2) 2.84mm thick (3) silicon nitride. The safety of Taguchi-optimized three-way catalyst were 4.7 times higher than that of existent three-way catalyst.

  • Source parameters for forty four earthquakes which occurred in and around the Korean Peninsula were determined and the relations between them were studied. Snoke's method (Snoke, 1987) was applied in determining the corner frequencies and seismic moments. In general, the source parameters estimated at different stations for an earthquake show different values. These disagreements have been interpreted as originating, in principle, from an inadequate consideration of the source radiation pattern and direction dependent attenuation and amplification. The comer frequencies and seismic moments were averaged to exclude the such directional effects. Other source parameters were estimated from the mean corner frequency and seismic moment. The static stress drops, determined in this study, tend to be independent of seismic moment for events greater than a specific magnitude. For earthquakes with a size less than about $1.0{\times}10^{22}$ dyne-cm (nearly same as $M_L = 4.0$), the stress drop tends to decrease with the decreasing moment. This fact suggests a breakdown of the scaling law of source parameters in earthquakes below the threshold magnitude.
