In this paper, load monitoring technologies using U-shape Magnetoelastic (EM or ME) sensors have been exploited systemically for the first time. The steel rod to be tested is the Japan 7 mm piano steel rod. The load dependence of the magnetic properties of the piano steel rod was manifested. Two experimental designs of U-shape magnetoelastic sensors were introduced, one with double pick-up concentric coils wound on the rod to be tested, the other with pick-up coil on one yoke foot. The former design is used to derive the correlation of the relative permeability with elastic tension, while the latter is aimed to reflect the stress induced magnetic flux variation along the magnetic circuit. Magnetostatic simulations provide interpretations for the yoke foot sensing technology. Tests with double pick-up coils indicate that under proper working points (primary voltages), the relative permeability varies linearly with the axial load for the Japan 7 mm piano steel rod. Tests with pick-up coil on the yoke foot show that the integrated sensing voltage changes quadratically with the load, and error is more acceptable when the working point is high enough.
It is very important to determine the thermo-mechanical characteristics of the rock mass surrounding the repository of radioctive waste and the LPG storage cavern. In this study, Hwasoon-Shist. Dado-Tuff adn Chunan-Tonalite were the selected rock types. Temperature dependence of the mechanical properteis such as uniaxial compressive strength, tensile strength, Young's modulus was investigated by measuring the behaviour of these properties due to the variation of temperature. Also, the characteristics of strength and deformation of these rocks were examined through high-temperature triaxial compression tests with varing temperatures and confining pressures. Important results obtained are as follows: In high temperature tests, the uniaxial compressive strength and Yong's modulus of Tonalite showed a sligth increase at a temperature up to 300$^{\circ}C$ and a sharp decrease beyond 300$^{\circ}C$, and the tensile strength showed a linear decrease with increasing heating-temperature. In high-temperature triaxial compression test, both the failure stress and Young's modulus of Tonalite increased with the increase of confining pressure at constant heating-temperature, and the failure stress decreased at 100$^{\circ}C$ but increased at 200$^{\circ}C$ under a constant confining pressure. In low temperature tests, the uniaxial compressive and tensile strengths and Young's modulus of these rocks increased as the cooling-temperature is reduced. Also, the uniaxial compressive and tensile strengths of wet rock specimens are less than those of dry rock specimens.
Silicon-based thin film was prepared at room temperature by an electrochemical deposition method and a feasibility study was conducted for its use as an anode material in a rechargeable lithium battery. The growth of the electrodeposits was mainly concentrated on the surface defects of the Cu substrate while that growth was trivial on the defect-free surface region. Intentional formation of random defects on the substrate by chemical etching led to uniform formation of deposits throughout the surface. The morphology of the electrodeposits reflected first the roughened surface of the substrate, but it became flattened as the deposition time increased, due primarily to the concentration of reduction current on the convex region of the deposits. The electrodeposits proved to be amorphous and to contain chlorine and carbon, together with silicon, indicating that the electrolyte is captured in the deposits during the fabrication process. The silicon in the deposits readily reacted with lithium, but thick deposits resulted in significant reaction overvoltage. The charge efficiency of oxidation (lithiation) to reduction (delithiation) was higher in the relatively thick deposit. This abnormal behavior needs to clarified in view of the thickness dependence of the internal residual stress and the relaxation tendency of the reaction-induced stress due to the porous structure of the deposits and the deposit components other than silicon.

Comprehensive numberical computations have been made for four turbulent swirling jets with and without recirculation to critically evaluate the accuracy and universality of several exising turbulence models as well as of the modified k-.epsilon. model proposed in the present study. A numerical scheme based on the full Navier-Stoke equations ha been developed and used for this purpose. Inlet conditions are given by experiments, whenever possible, to minimize the error due to incorrect initial conditions. The standard k-.epsilon. model performs well for the strongly swirling jets with recirculation while it underpredicts the influence of swirl for weakly swirling jets. Rodi's swirl correction and algebraic stress model do not exhibit universality for the swirling jets. The present modified k-.epsilon. model derived from algebraic stress model accounts for anisotropy and streamline curvature effect on turbulence. This model performs consistently better than others for all cases. It may be because these flows have a strong dependence of stresses on the local strain of the mean flow. The predictions of truculence intensities indicate that this model successfully reflect the curvature effect in swirling jets, i.e. the stabilizing and destabilizing effects of swirl on turbulence transport.
A strain-gradient crystal plasticity constitutive model was developed in order to predict the Hall-Petch behavior of a Ni-base polycrystalline superalloy. The constitutive model involves statistically stored dislocation and geometrically necessary dislocation densities, which were incorporated into the Bailey-Hirsch type flow stress equation with six strength interaction coefficients. A strain-gradient term (called slip-system lattice incompatibility) developed by Acharya was used to calculate the geometrically necessary dislocation density. The description of Kocks-Argon-Ashby type thermally activated strain rate was also used to represent the shear rate of an individual slip system. The constitutive model was implemented in a user material subroutine for crystal plasticity finite element method simulations. The grain size dependence of the flow stress (viz., the Hall-Petch behavior) was predicted for a Ni-base polycrystalline superalloy NIMONIC PE16. Simulation results showed that the present constitutive model fairly reasonably predicts 0.2%-offset yield stresses in a limited range of the grain size.
Violin bridge blank cut from maple wood with good quality has typical pattern of the radial direction in the side edge with minimal dispersion. This experimental study was designed and carried out to examine the effect of the physical and macroscopical characteristics on the compressive creep of violin bridge blank which had been imported from European manufacturer. This research arose from the idea that the maple solid wood with heterogeneous wood density and ray direction in the side edge would have uneven rheological property of violin bridge blank which is supposed to be pressed by the tension of strings. Experimentally, the compressive creep of bridge blank became smaller with the higher density of imported maple wood and showed clear density-dependence for the duration of load under the string tension of 5 kgf. Every bridge blank showed the behavior of primary creep stage(stress stabilization) having logarithmic regression creep curve with high correlation coefficient under the designed stress level. Even though the relationship between compressive creep and ray direction on the side edge of bridge was not so clear contrary to expectation, we could conclude that wood density and ray direction should be the quality decisive factors affecting the acoustical characteristics and performance of the bridge, the core member of violin-family bow instruments.
The deformation properties of a TiC-Mo eutectic composite were investigated in a compression test at temperatures ranging from room temperature to 2053 K and at strain rates ranging from $3.9{\times}10^{-5}s^{-1}$ to $4.9{\times}10^{-3}s^{-1}$. It was found that this material shows excellent high-temperature strength as well as appreciable room-temperature toughness, suggesting that the material is a good candidate for high-temperature application as a structure material. At a low-temperature, high strength is observed. The deformation behavior is different among the three temperature ranges tested here, i.e., low, intermediate and high. At an intermediate temperature, no yield drop occurs, and from the beginning the work hardening level is high. At a high temperature, a yield drop occurs again, after which deformation proceeds with nearly constant stress. The temperature- and yield-stress-dependence of the strain is the strongest in this case among the three temperature ranges. The observed high-temperature deformation behavior suggests that the excellent high-temperature strength is due to the constraining of the deformation in the Mo phase by the thin TiC components, which is considerably stronger than bulk TiC. It is also concluded that the appreciable room-temperature toughness is ascribed to the frequent branching of crack paths as well as to the plastic deformation of the Mo phase.
The high temperature deformation behavior of $SiC_p/Al-Si$ composites and Al-Si matrix was studied by hot torsion test in a range of temperature from $270^{\circ}C$ to $520^{\circ}C$ and at strain rate range of $1.2{\times}10_{-3}~2.16{\times}10_{-1}/sec$. The hot restoration mechanisms for both matrix and composites were found to be dynamic recrystallization(DRX) from the investigation of flow curves and microstructural evolutions. The Si precipitates and SiC particles promoted DRX, and the peak strain$({\varepsilon}_p)$ of the composites was smaller than that of the matrix. Flow stresses of $SiC_p/Al-Si$ composites were found to be generally higher than the matrix, but the difference was quite small at higher temperature due to the decrease of capability of load transfer by SiC particles. With increasing temperature, failure strain of matrix and composites are inclined to increase, the increasing value of failure strain for the $SiC_p/Al-Si$ composites was small compared to that of matrix. The stress dependence of both materials on strain rate() and temperature(T) was examined by hyperbolic sine law, $\.{\varepsilon}=A_1[sinh({\alpha}{\cdot}{\sigma})]_n$exp(-Q/RT)
Potato starches are obtained from Irish Cobbler (the dry type), Shepody and superior (the intermediate type) and Dejima (the moist type). Rheological properties of heat-gelatinized potato starch paste were studied to elucidate difference of various potato starches. Heat-gelatinized 3 to 7% potato starch paste showed pseudo plasticity in yield stress. As starch paste concentration increased, the values of consistency index was increased. Relationship between logarithmic consistency index and concentration of potato starch paste was linear at 5% starch concentration. Concentration dependence of consistency index and yield stress of Shepody was highest. As measuring temperature increased, the value of consistency index was decreased. Irish Cobbler starch paste at $50^{\circ}C$, Shepody, Superior and Dejima starch paste at $60^{\circ}C$ showed linear relationships with different slopes. The activation energies of Shepody starch paste was 3.97㎉l/㏖.
Changes in viscosity and dynamic theological properties of Job's-tears were measured by Bohlin dynamic tester as a function of moisture, and measurement was performed within a linear viscoelastic range. The result of the shear stress vs shear rate of Job's-tears at different moisture contents $(50{\sim}75%)$ was applied to mathematical models and Herschel-Bulkley model showed the highest correlation coefficient. Lower moisture content (55%) produced higher yield stress and consistency index, but lower flow behavior index, whereas higher moisture content showed reverse effects. Job's-tears with $50{\sim}70%$ moisture contents showed a higher storage modulus (G') than loss modulus (G') at all frequencies, showing a higher concentrated polymer characteristics. However, higher moisture content (>75%) showed crossover point between G' and G', and frequency dependency. As the moisture content was increased, the amount of viscoelastic properties such as G', G', complex viscosity decreased during heating, and initial temperature and miximum value of viscoelastic properties shifted to higher temperatures, representing the moisture-dependence of Job's-tears upon theological properties.
