  • This study was designed to identify the relationships of role-conflict and role-overload, coping strategies, and stress response of clerical workers. The subjects were 115 clerical workers from two company. The instruments were the role-conflict and role-overload scale developed by Lee(1989), coping scale developed by Latack(1986), and the stress response scale developed by Chang(1993). Analysis of data was done by descriptive statistics, Cronbach's $\alpha$, Pearson correlation coefficietnt, ANOVA. The results of this study were summarized as follows ; 1. The average score for the level of stress response was $83.6({\pm}9.1)$. The high risk stress group was 86.1% of the clerical workers, the latent stress group members was 13.9%, and healthy group was 0%. The overall stress level was very high. 2. Considering the coping strategies by sociodemographic factors, the use of control coping strategies showed significant differences by work-time. The use of symptom management coping strategies showed significant differences by sex, age, married status, year of career, pay, and type of work. The organizational coping strategies showed significant differences by year of education and type of work. 3. The clerical workers who had worked below 44 hours per week complained significantly lower stress response(F=4.942, p<.05). 4. Above 65% of all respondents answered that they needed all of organizational level coping strategies. 5. The role-confilct positively related to escape and organizational level coping strategies(r=.562, r=.495, p<.05). The role-overload didn't related to individual level coping strategies, but positively related to organizational level coping strategies(r=.320, p<.05). 6. The control coping strategies and the escape coping strategies positively related to symptom management, organizational level coping strategies(r=.409, r=.324, r=.316, r=.339, p<.05). 7. The relationship between role-related stress and stress response revealed positive correlation(r=.482, r=.431, p<.05), and the relationship between stress response and control, symptom management coping strategies revealed negative cor-relation(r=-.3204, r=-.3146, p<.05). In conclusion, this study revealed that relationship of role related stress, coping strategies, stress response was statistically significant. The result of this study support that coping strategies vary across situation of stress. Based on survey results, future studies should consider coping strategies in specific stress situation and concept of symptom management coping strategy. Also organizational or training interventions could be developed and initiate to help to increase the use of adaptive coping strategies in light of individual and situational differences.

The findings of this study are summarized in the following. First, the mean score of the level of financial management-related stress among urban housewives was 2.61 when the maximum level was set at 5. In order to overcome the stress from financial management, housewives utilized various strategies, such as purchasing management, financial planning, financial information gathering, getting a loan, and delaying payments. The average level of economic well-being among urban housewives was 2.82 when the maximum level was 5. Second, among socio-demographic factors, the family's monthly income and the husband's job satisfaction were the two most significant factors that affected the level of financial management stress among housewives. Third, there was a difference in employing coping strategies according to the level of stress. The group with a higher level of financial stress employed more coping strategies than the group with, a lower level of stress. Fourth, there were differences in the level of economic well-being, depending on the types of coping strategies employed. Fifth, the results from regression analyses, which were conducted to determine the relative explanatory power of different independent variable groups including subjective factors, financial management stress, and coping strategies, showed that socio-demographic and objective economic factors significantly affected economic well-being.

  • The purpose of this study was to contribute to family nursing in the areas of reducing stress and improving coping for parents of mentally retarded children. Data were collected through self-report questionnaires during a period of 2 months between November 1994 and January 1995 in the Kyoung-in area. The subjects consist of 176 parents (88 mothers and 88 fathers) of mentally retarded children attending schools for the handicapped. The levels of general stress and of parental role stress were measured with the General stress scale and the Parental role stress scale, respectively. The coping scale developed by Folkman & LaZarus was adopted to measure the level of coping, and the patterns of adaptation scale developed by Damrosch & Perry was adopted to measure the patterns of adaptation. The data were analyzed by a SAS program using Fisher's exact test, paired t-test, and oneway ANOVA. The results are as follows ; 1. The level of general stress was significantly higher in mothers than in fathers. Mothers experienced a significantly greater level of parental role stress than fathers did. No significant difference in the level of coping was observed between mothers and fathers. There were differences in maternal and paternal patterns of adaptation. 2. The adaptation pattern of fathers was different according to their level of general stress, parental role stress and coping. The adaptation pattern of mothers was not different according to their level of general stress and parental role stress, but was according to their level of coping. 3. General stress experienced by fathers was different according to education, health status and support from their spouses. Satisfaction with family life, satisfaction with spouse and the support from spouse influenced coping used by fathers. Their level of parental role stress was not associated with any of their general characteristics. 4. In mothers, the level of general stress was different according to their health status, the level of parental role stress was related to satisfaction with family life and satisfaction with spouse. Their level of coping was associated with the sup port from spouse. The above findings indicate that mothers did not have more coping strategies than fathers did, despite the results which showed that mothers experienced greater stress than fathers did. Especially, the adaptation pattern of mothers was different according to their level of coping. Hence, nursing interventions directed at managing stress and improving coping should be used with mothers who use adaptation pattern 1. In particular, fathers should actively participate in parenting, and support their spouses.
