In the process of integrity evaluation for nuclear power plant components, a series of fracture mechanics evaluation on surface cracks in reactor pressure vessel(RPV) must be conducted. These fracture mechanics evaluations are based on stress intensity factor, K. However, under pressurized thermal shock(PTS) conditions, the combination of thermal and mechanical stress by steep temperature gradient and internal pressure causes considerably high tensile stress at the inside of RPV wall. Besides, the internal pressure during the normal operation produces high tensile stress at the RPV wall. As a result cracks on inner surface of RPVs may experience elastic-plastic behavior which can be explained with J-integral. In such a case, however, J-integral may possibly lose its validity due to constraint effect. In this paper, in order to verify the suitability of J-integral, two dimensional finite element analyses were applied for various surface crack. Total of 18 crack geometries were analyzed, and Q stresses were obtained by comparing resulting HRR stress distribution with corresponding actual stress distributions. In conclusion, HRR stress fields were found to overestimate the actual crack-tin stress field due to constraint effect.

This paper deals with an evaluation of the residual stress due to shot peening induced in a carburized gear tooth and its application to the fatigue crack propagation problem. A practical method is proposed on the basis of the assumption that the residual stress is caused by the difference of volume expansion in the case and the core, and the influence of both the reduction of retained austenite and the strain due to shot peening are considered. The evaluated residual stress is close to the measured stress, though the surface stress is rather overestimated. The stress intensity factor is computed by the influence function method, and it is shown that the factor is decreased by the residual stress in shot peened gear tooth. The shot peening is fairly effective to the reduction of fatigue crack growth rate. The crack propagation is simulated and the resistance due to shot peening is quantitatively demonstrated and discussed.

Plane-strain fatigue crack growth behavior of 7075-76 aluminium alloy was investigated by using side-grooved through-thickness center cracked tension(CCT) specimens. The effect of side-groove on the stress intensity factor value was examined. The effective thickness expression of $B_{e}$= $B_{o}$-( $B_{o}$-( $B_{ o-B_{n}^{2}}$$B_{o}$ is the most appropriate to evaluate the stress intensity factor of side-grooved CCT specimen for fatigue testing. Fatigue crack growth rates can be well described by the effective stress intensity factor range based on closure measurements, for both side-grooved and uniform thickness specimens. Provided that the thickness of specimen meets the requirements for valid plane-strain fracture toughness, uniform thickness specimen data may be assumed to approximately represent the plane strain through-thickness crack growth behavior.ehavior.r.
Methods for determination of the crack opening stress intensity factor ($K_{op}$) and for estimation of the effective stress intensity factor range ($\Delta{K}_{eff}$) are evaluated for crack growth test data of aluminum alloys. Three methods of determining $K_{op}$, visual measurement, ASTM offset compliance method, and the neural network method proposed by Kang and Song, and three methods of estimating $\Delta{K}_{eff}$, conventional, the 2/PIO and 2/PI methods proposed by Donald and Paris, are compared in a quantitative manner by using evaluation criteria. For all $K_{op}$ determination methods discussed, the 2/PI method of estimating $\Delta{K}_{eff}$ provides good results. The neural network method of determining $K_{op}$ provides good correlation of crack growth data. It is recommended to use 2/PI estimation with the neural $K_{op}$ determination method. The ASTM offset method used in conjunction with 2/PI estimation shows a possibility of successful application. It is desired to improve the ASTM method.

In this paper, in order to study the geometric factor effect of a circular hole near a crack tip in a semi-infinite plate, the Dimensionless Stress Intensity Factor, $F(=\frac K {\sigma {\sqrt{\pi a}}})$ is analyzed at the crack tip using a two Dimensional Boundary Element Method (BEM) program which is known as superior in Fracture Mechanics. Kelvin's solution was used as a fundamental solution in BEM analysis and displacement extrapolation method was used to determine Stress Intensity Factor.

a crack with electrically impermeable surfaces in an electrostrictive material subjected to uniform electric loading is analysed. A strip yield zone model is employed to investigate the effect of electric yielding on stress intensity factor. complete forms of electric fields and elastic fields for the crack are derived by using complex function theory. /the stress intensity factors are obtained based on the strip yield zone model.
This paper aims to analyze fatigue fracture mechnisms with high strength aluminum alloys, which are widely used in vehicles or airplanes to prevent accidents. Usefulness of the crack opening point was proposed by using an effective stress intensity facor when evaluating the fatigue crack propagaion rate. Therefore an exact crack opening ratio can be measured for a more exact fatigue crack propagation rate. It is found that the fatigue crack propagation rate was valid within the range of experimentation as an effective stress intensity factor. Summarizing the results are as follows in this paper ; (1) It is found that the value of the crack opening ratio is constant at the rear of the specimen, U'=0.25 at the crack mouth and U'=0.45 at the crack tip, respectively regardless of the stress ratio. (2) The crack opening ratio is different according to measurement locations. The crack opening ratio value was measured at the crack mouth by a clip gage or measured behind the specimen by a strain gage. It is found that the crack opening ratio value is more accurate that any other measuring test for evaluating the crack propagation ratio test by effective stress intensity factor.

In this study, the influence of compressive residual stress and corrosive condition for corrosion fatigue crack was investigated, after immersing in 3.5%NaCl, $10%HNO_3+3%HF,\;6%FeCl_3$. The immersion period was performed for 90days. The fatigue characterization of a spring steel with processed shot peening were performed by considering the several corrosion environments in the range of stress ratio of 0.05 by means of opening mode displacement. By using the methods mentioned above, the following conclusions have been drawn: The fatigue life shows more improvement in the shot peened material than that in the un peened material. And the fatigue life shows improvement in ambient than in corrosion conditions. Threshold stress intensity factor range of the shot peened materials has higher than of the un peened materials. And the threshold stress intensity factor range was decreased in corrosion environments over ambient.

The integrity evaluation of pipes in nuclear power plant are essential for the safety of reactor vessel, and integrity must be assured when flaws are found. Accurate stress intensity analyses and crack growth rate data of surface-cracked components are needed for reliable prediction of their fatigue life and fracture strengths. Fatigue design and life assessment are the essential technologies to design the structures such as pipe, industrial plant equipment and so on. The effect of crack spacing on stress intensity factor K values was studied using three-dimensional finite element method (FEM). For the case of cylinder under internal pressure, a significant increase in K values observed at the deepest point of the surface crack. Also, this paper describes the fatigue analysis for cracked structures submitted to bending loads.
Delayed hydride cracking (DHC) is an important failure mechanism for Zircaloy tubes in the demanding environment of nuclear reactors. The threshold stress intensity factor, $K_{IH}$, and critical hydride length, $l_C$, are important parameters to evaluate DHC. Theoretical models of them are developed for Zircaloy tubes undergoing non-homogenous temperature loading, with new stress distributions ahead of the crack tip and thermal stresses involved. A new stress distribution in the plastic zone ahead of the crack tip is proposed according to the fracture mechanics theory of second-order estimate of plastic zone size. The developed models with fewer fitting parameters are validated with the experimental results for $K_{IH}$ and $l_C$. The research results for radial cracking cases indicate that a better agreement for $K_{IH}$ can be achieved; the negative axial thermal stresses can lessen $K_{IH}$ and enlarge the critical hydride length, so its effect should be considered in the safety evaluation and constraint design for fuel rods; the critical hydride length $l_C$ changes slightly in a certain range of stress intensity factors, which interprets the phenomenon that the DHC velocity varies slowly in the steady crack growth stage. Besides, the sensitivity analysis of model parameters demonstrates that an increase in yield strength of zircaloy will result in a decrease in the critical hydride length $l_C$, and $K_{IH}$ will firstly decrease and then have a trend to increase with the yield strength of Zircaloy; higher fracture strength of hydrided zircaloy will lead to very high values of threshold stress intensity factor and critical hydride length at higher temperatures, which might be the main mechanism of crack arrest for some Zircaloy materials.
