The purpose of this paper is to pursue a general method to determine both the flow stress of a material and the friction factor by ring compression test. The materials are assumed to obey the expanded n-power hardening rule including the strain-rate effect. Ring compression is simulated by the rigid-plastic finite element method to obtain the database used in determining the flow stress and friction factor. The Simulation is conducted for various strain hardening exponent, strain-rate sensitivity, friction factor, and compressing speed, as variables. It is assumed that the friction factor is constant during the compression process. To evaluate the compatibility of the database, experiments are carried out at room and evaluated temperature using specimens of aluminum 6061-T6 under dry and grease lubrication condition. It is shown that the proposed test method is useful and easy to use in determining the flow stress and the friction factor.

This paper describes the extension of the numerical model, which was developed to simulate the nonlinear behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) structures subjected to monotonic in plane shear and introduced in the companion paper, to simulate effectively the behavior of RE structures under cyclic loadings. While maintaining all the basic assumptions adopted in defining the constitutive relations of concrete under monotonic loadings, a hysteretic stress strain relation of concrete, which across the tension compression region, is defined. In addition, unlike previous simplified stress strain relations, curved unloading and reloading branches inferred from the stress strain relation of steel considering the Bauschinger effect we used. The modifications of the stress strain relation of steel are also introduced to reflect pinching effect depending on the shear span ratio and an average stress distribution in a cracked RC element. Finally, correlation studies between analytical results and experimental studies are conducted to establish the validity of the proposed model.
Stress/stram dependencies of the critical current $I_c$ in AgMgNi sheathed multifilamentary Bi(2212) superconducting tapes were evaluated at 77K, 0T. The external reinforcement was accomplished by soldering Ag-Mg tapes to sin91e side or both sides of the sample. With the external reinforcement. the strength of tapes increased but $I_c$, decreased The $I_c$, degradation characteristic according to the external reinforcement was improved markedly in terms of the stress although it appeared less rectal.table on the basis of the strain. Effects of external reinforcement were discussed in a viewpoint of monitoring sensitivity of cracking in superconducting filaments by considering n-value representing the transport behavior of the current. It is closely associated with the location of them relative to the voltage-monitoring region in the tape.

This paper describes an extension of a numerical model, which was developed to simulate the nonlinear behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) structures subject to monotonic in-plane shear. While maintaining all the basic assumptions adopted in defining the constitutive relations of concrete under monotonic loadings, a hysteretic stress-strain relation of concrete, which crosses the tension-compression region, is defined. In addition, curved unloading and reloading branches inferred from the stress-strain relation of steel considering the Bauschinger effect are used. Modifications of the stress-strain relation of concrete and steel are also introduced to reflect a pinching effect depending on the shear span ratio and to represent an average stress distribution in a cracked RC element, respectively.

The objectives of this study are to estimate the strengthening effect of concrete column strengthened with CFS and to provide basic guideline for the strengthening design with laminated composite materials. Analysis stress-strain model of laminated CFS is presented based on laminate theory. This model has been implemented in the algorithm of evaluating confinement effect of CFS. From results of the algorithm, stress-strain relationship of confined concrete is obtained. Using this stress-strain relationship, section analyses of circular and rectangular concrete columns strengthened with CFS are carried our, and load-moment interaction and load-ductility curves of the columns are obtained. To evaluate the strengthening effects of CFS, parametric study is also conducted for the angle of ply, thickness of CFS, shape of section, and reinforcement ratio. Based on this investigation, design recommendations and basic guidelines for the strengthening design with CFS are proposed.
To investigate the stress-strain relation of PVC-FRP Confined Concrete (PFCC) column with RC ring beam joint subjected to eccentric compression, the experiment of 13 joint specimens, which were designed with principle of "strong joint and weak column", were presented. Several variable parameters, such as reinforcement ratio, width and height of ring beam, FRP strips spacing and eccentricity, were considered. The specimens were eventually damaged by the crushing of concrete, the fracture of PVC tube and several FRP strips. With the FRP strips spacing or eccentricity increased, the ultimate carrying capacity of specimens declined. The strain of FRP strips and axial strain of PVC tube decreased as FRP strips spacing decreased. The decrease of eccentricity would slow down the development of strain of FRP strips and axial strain of PVC tube. The slope of stress-strain curve of PFCC column decreased as FRP strips spacing or eccentricity increased. The ultimate strain of PFCC column reduced as FRP strips spacing increased, while the effect of eccentricity on the ultimate strain of PFCC was not distinct. Considering the influence of eccentricity on the stress-strain relation, a modified stress-strain model for conveniently predicting the weak PFCC column and strong RC ring beam joint under eccentric compression was proposed and it was in good agreement with the experimental data.

It is well-known that the mechanical behavior of fiber-reinforced composites under hydrostatic pressure environment is different from that of atmospheric pressure environment. It is also known that the mechanical behavior of fiber-reinforced composites is affected by strain rate. In this work, we investigated the effect of strain rate on the compressional elastic modulus and fracture stress of fiber-reinforced composites under hydrostatic pressure environment. The material used in the compressional test was unidirectional carbon/epoxy composites and the hydrostatic pressures applied was 250 MPa. Compressional tests were performed applying various strain rates of 0.05 %/sec, 0.25 %/sec, 0.45 %/sec, and 0.75 %/sec. The results showed that the elastic modulus increased with increasing strain rate while the fracture stress was little affected by the strain rate.
TiNi/ Al6061 shape memory alloy (SMA) composite was fabricated by hot press method to investigate the microstructure and mechanical properties. Interface bonding between TiNi reinforcement and A1 matrix was observed by using SEM and EDS. Pre-strain was imposed to generate compressive residual stress inside composite. A tensile test for specimen, which under-went pre-strain, was performed at high temperature to evaluate the variation of strength and the effect of pre-strain. It was shown that interfacial reactions occurred at the bonding between matrix and fiber, creating two inter-metallic layers. And yield stress increased with the amount of pre-strain. Acoustic Emission technique was also used to nondestructively clarify the microscopic damage behavior at high temperature and the effect of pre-strain of TiNi/ Al6061 SMA composite.
Yttria stabilized zirconia (Y-CSZ) single crystals show plastic deformation at high temperatures by activating dislocations. The effect of strain rate on the plastic behavior of this crystal was studied. As increasing strain rate from $\varepsilon=1.04\times10^{-5} sec^{-1}$ to $2.08\times10^{-5} sec^{-1}$ the yield drop was suppressed and resulted in higher Young's modulus and yield stress. Dislocation structures of the strained crystals were analyzed using a transmission electron microscope to elucidate the plastic behavior of these crystals. In the early stage of plastic deformation, dislocation dipoles and prismatic dislocation loops were formed in both samples. However, dislocation density was increased by increasing strain rate. Strong sessile dislocations were observed in the sample with higher strain rate, which may cause the higher work hardening.

The study presents structural integrity assessment of ductility degradation of a baffle former assembly by performing finite element analysis considering real loading conditions and stress triaxiality. Variations of fracture strain curves of type 304 austenitic stainless steel with stress triaxiality are derived based on the previous study results. Temperature distributions during normal operation such as heat-up, steady state, and cool-down are calculated via finite element temperature analysis considering gamma heating and heat convection with reactor coolant. Variations of stress and strain state during long operation period are also calculated by performing sequentially coupled temperature-stress analysis. Fracture strain is derived by using the fracture curve and the stress triaxility. Finally, variations of ductility degradation damage indicator with the fracture strain and the equivalent inelastic strain are investigated. It is found that maximum value of the ductility degradation damage index continuously increases and becomes 0.4877 at 40 EFPYs. Also, the maximum value occurs at top and middle inner parts of the baffle former assembly before and after 20 EFPYs, respectively.
