To improve braced frame performance, the connection strength, stiffness, and ductility must be directly considered in the frame design. The resistance of the connection must be designed to resist seismic loads and to help provide the required system ductility. In addition, the connection stiffness affects the dynamic response and the deformation demands on the structural members and connections. In this paper, current design models for gusset plate connections are reviewed and evaluated usingthe results of past experiments. Current models are still not sufficient to provide adequate connection design guidelines and the actual stress and strain states in the gusset plate are very nonlinear and highly complex. Design engineers want simple models with beam and column elements to make an approximate estimation of system and connection performance. The simplified design models are developed and evaluated to predict connection stiffness and system behavior. These models produce reasonably accurate and reliable estimation of connection stiffness.
In the steel structure of high-rise buildings, a connection analysisand a column design have been made after welding and bolting suitable gaps. Each country, however, has different codes, and such differences are very big. American steel has been designed according to a code that all axial loads can be carried from the upper parts to the lower parts as determined by the designer, but Korean and Japanese steel have been designed by 1/4 of the standard of all axial loads. In this paper, a metal touch experiment was done as an intermediation parameter with a connecting location and a connecting method for economic and constructive efficiency. Every specimen is tested by a low-to-high displacement control to grasp ultimate strength, displacement, the connection's lateral deflection, and stress. The results of the test were compared and analyzed.

The wall system has been also tending to shift from existing concrete wall to variable lightweight wall according to increasing use of column structure system in apartment construction. Therefore, wall needs certain amount of strength which also means the standard measurement of resistance against loading of wall attachments is needed. Nevertheless, there currently aren't enough researches of related standards for such measurement. For such reason, the research would be used as baseline data to development for test methods of load resistance about attachments on the lightweight wall, that presented improvements in the apparatus and maximum loads for domestic circumstances by researching current tests.

Abstract Spinel powder having a particle size of 0.9$\mu$m was calcined for 30 min at $1300^{\circ}C$, followed by ball milling for 4h, to obtain the spinel particle size of 3.29$\mu$m. The die-pressed spinel was presintered at $1100^{\circ}C$ for 2h and then lanthanum aluminosilicate glass was infiltrated at $1080^{\circ}C$ for 0~2 h to investigate the penetration kinetics in glass-spinel composite. The infiltration distance is parabolic in time due to capillarity. The strength and the fracture toughness of glassspinel composites were 317 MPa and 3.56 MPa $m^{1/2}$ respectively and dual microstructure of column (needle) and polygonal shapes as a result of recrystallization was observed due to the high calcination temperature.
Advanced analysis and optimal design of steel arch bridges is presented. In the design method using an advanced analysis, separate member capacity checks after analysis are not required because the stability and strength of the structural system and its component members can be rigorously treated in the analysis. The geometric nonlinearity is considered by using the stability function. The Column Research Council tangent modulus is used to account for gradual yielding due to residual stresses. A parabolic function is used to represent the transition from elastic to zero stiffness associated with a developing hinge. An optimization technique used is a modified section increment method. The member with the largest unit value evaluated by AASHTO-LRFD interaction equation is replaced one by one with an adjacent larger member selected in the database. The objective function is taken as the weight of the steel arch bridge and the constraint functions account for load-carrying capacities and deflection requirements. Member sizes determined by the proposed method are compared with those given by other approaches.

The main objective of this study is to develop an optimization algorithm of framed structures with rigid and various semi-rigid connections using the multilevel dynamic programming and the sequential unconstrained minimization techniques (SUMT). The second-order elastic analysis is performed for steel framed structures. The second order elastic analysis is developed based on nonlinear beam-column theory considering the bowing effect. The following semi-rigid connections are considered; double web angle, top-seat angle and top-seat angle with web angle. We considered the three connection models, such as modified exponential, polynomial and three parameter model. The total weight of the structural steel is used as the objective function in the optimization process. The dimensions of steel cross section are selected as the design variables. The design constraints consist of strength requirements for axial, shear and flexural resistance and serviceability requirements.

The design method of the reinforced concrete structures is converting from the current limit state design method to the reliability based design method and active studies have been done in the US, Europe, and Japan etc. Performance based design method is considering lots of uncertainty of current design provision rationally and make sure that structure have a reliable reliability and safety. The main area of these studies is to secure the non-linear analysis technology with high reliability. The data for reinforced concrete columns tested by many researchers are used to verify the applicability of the nonlinear finite element analysis program (RCAHEST, Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology). A comparison is made between analysis and test, calculated safety factor based on reliability theories to applies to analysis result.

The Concrete-Filled Tube (CFT) system was developed for its excellent structural performance, such as its good stiffness, stress and ductility, which is derived from the mechanical advantages of its composite structure. However, it is known that the flat type of reinforcing plates need stiffeners placed at a certain distance from each other to avoid buckling failure, which increases the cost accordingly. This paper investigates the contribution of the rib elements placed inside the steel tube for the purpose of increasing the bond strength between the steel and concrete and fire performance with no additional protection. The test results also demonstrate the effectiveness of the corrugated rib's shape against fire. The results of this study showed that the buckling prevention and fire resistance performance criteria were satisfied by the application of the inner surface attachment rib, due to the resulting increase in the strength of the CFT column. Therefore, it is considered that the CFT method using the corrugated rib structure reinforcement developed through this study satisfies the structural and fire resistance performance criteria without the need for a refractory coating. Future studies will be needed to make the process efficient and economical for factory production.
Many researches have been performed on concrete with fly ash and bottom ash. However researches on concrete with pond ash (PA) and its application to RC (Reinforced Concrete) structure are limitedly carried out. This paper presents an applicability of PA concrete in construction of real size structure. Referring to the previous study, 2 domestic PA samples with normal performance are selected and 2 replacement ratios (25% and 50%) to fine aggregate are considered for 5 PA concrete structures consisting of column, slab, and wall. In order to evaluate the property of fresh concrete, several tests including air content, slump, and setting time are performed. Using cored out samples from hardened PA concrete structure, tests for strength, resistance to carbonation and chloride penetration are carried out and compared with control samples. Additionally, tests for rebound hardness, drying shrinkage, and hydration heat are performed for PA concrete structure. The test results showed that PA concrete has reasonable strength and durability performances compared to those of normal concrete. Therefore, its potential application to RC structure is promising. The PA aggregate can be more actively used for RC structures with better quality control for content of fly ash, bottom ash, and unburned carbon.
This paper summarized the results of a full-scale cyclic seismic testing on four reduced beam section (RBS) steel moment connections. Specifically, these tests addressed a bolted web versus a welded web connection and strong versus medium panel zone (PZ) strength as key test variables. Specimens with medium PZ strength were designed to promote balanced energy dissipation from both PZ and RBS regions, in order to reduce the requirement for expensive doubler plates. Both strong and medium PZ specimens with welded web connection were able to provide sufficient connection rotation capacity required of special moment-resisting frames. On the other hand, specimens with bolted web connection performed poorly due to premature brittle fracture of the beam flange at the weld access hole. Unlike the case of web-welded specimens, specimens with cheaper bolted web connection could not transfer the actual plastic moment of the original (or unreduced) beam section to the column. No fracture occurred within the beam groove welds of any connection in this testing program. If fracture within the beam flange groove weld is avoided by using quality welding procedure as in this study, the fracture issue tends to move into the beam flange base metal at the weld access hole. Supporting analytical study was also conducted in order to understand the observed base metal fracture from the engineering mechanics perspective.
