The mock-up test was carried out to solve several problems of the hot weathered high strength concrete. The workability of concrete could be guaranteed by using high range water reducer containing polycarboxylic acid. The compressive strength calculation by rebound value of Schumidt hammer underestimated the actual strength of concrete structure. The temperature of concrete should be lowered by control of raw material temperature and transportation.
An effective way of increasing the strength and fracture toughness of reactor pressure vessel steels is to change the material specification from that of Mn-Mo-Ni low alloy steel(SA508 Gr.3) to Ni-Mo-Cr low alloy steel(SA508 Gr.4N). In this study, we evaluate the effects of alloying elements on the microstructural characteristics of Ni-Mo-Cr low alloy steel. The changes in the stable phase of the SA508 Gr.4N low alloy steel with alloying elements were evaluated by means of a thermodynamic calculation conducted with the software ThermoCalc. The changes were then compared with the observed microstructural results. The calculation of Ni-Mo-Cr low alloy steels confirms that the ferrite formation temperature decreases as the Ni content increases because of the austenite stabilization effect. Consequently, in the microscopic observation, the lath martensitic structure becomes finer as the Ni content increases. However, Ni does not affect the carbide phases such as $M_{23}C_6 $ and $M_7C_3$. When the Cr content decreases, the carbide phases become unstable and carbide coarsening can be observed. With an increase in the Mo content, the $M_2C$ phase becomes stable instead of the $M_7C_3$ phase. This behavior is also observed in TEM. From the calculation results and the observation results of the microstructure, the thermodynamic calculation can be used to predict the precipitation behavior.
In this paper, cyclic loading tests on composite frame inner joints of steel-reinforced recycled concrete (SRRC) column-steel beam were conducted. The main objective of the test was to obtain the shear behavior and analyze the shear strength of the joints. The main design parameters in the test were recycled coarse aggregate (RCA) replacement percentage and axial compression ratio. The failure process, failure modes, hysteresis curves and strain characteristics of the joints were obtained, and the influences of design parameters on the shear strength of the joints have been also analysed in detail. Results show that the failure modes of the joints area are typical shear failure. The shear bearing capacity of the joints maximally decreased by 10.07% with the increase in the RCA replacement percentage, whereas the shear bearing capacity of the joints maximally increased by 16.6% with the increase in the axial compression ratio. A specific strain analysis suggests that the shear bearing capacity of the joints was mainly provided by the three shear elements of the recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) diagonal compression strut, steel webs and stirrups of the joint area. According to the shear mechanism and test results, the calculation formulas of the shear bearing capacity of the three main shear elements were deduced separately. Thus, the calculation model of the shear bearing capacity of the composite joints considering the adverse effects of the RCA replacement percentage was established through a superposition method. The calculated values of shear strength based on the calculation model were in good agreement with the test values. It indicates that the calculation method in this study can reasonably predict the shear bearing capacity of the composite frame inner joints of SRRC column-steel beam.
In the Ultimate Strength Design, the design strength of a member is determined by multiplying the strength reduction factor to the nominal strength. This concept may be a reasonable approach, however it can not consider failure modes appropriately. Moreover, column design strength diagram show an abrupt change at a low level of axial load, which does not seem to be reasonable. This research compares the design strength determined by the strength resistance factors. As the material resistance factors for flexure and compression, 0.65 and 0.90 are proposed for concrete and steel, respectively. The design strength calculation process by applying material resistance factors addresses failure modes more effectively than by applying member strength reduction factor, and provides more resnable design strength for reinforced concrete flexural and compression members.
Nominal shear strength of concrete beam is the combined strength of concrete shear strength and steel shear strength in current design code. But Torsional moment strength of concrete is neglected in calculation of the nominal torsional moment strength of reinforced concrete beam in current revised code. Tensile stress of concrete strut between cracks is still in effect due to tension stiffening effect. But the tensile stresses of concrete after cracking are neglected in bending and torsion in design. The torsional behavior is similar to the shear behavior in mechanics. Therefore the torsional moment strength of concrete should be concluded to the nominal torsional moment strength of reinforced concrete beam. To verify the validity of the proposed model, the nominal torsional moment strengths according to CEB, two ACI codes(89, 99) and proposed model are compared to experimental torsional strengths of 55 test specimens found in literature. The nominal torsional moment strengths by the proposed model show the best results.
Increasing tensions of contact wire and messenger wire are essential to construct a test-bed for catenary system in the 400km/h speed on Honam high-speed railway. Because heavy load is applied to a mast due to the increased the tensions of both wires it is required to investigate the strength of the foundation. Therefore, in this study the maximum moment of an electric pole under the worst condition was calculated to investigate the strength of the pole foundation on the bridges. The maximum moment database table used in the construction of Kyungbu high-speed railway was referenced to derive the worst conditions and to review the composition of catenary system in the test-bed section. From the results of this study regarding assumptions and calculation process it will be possible to estimate the optimized strength of the pole foundations on the bridges which will be constructed in the future.
In this paper, we present a study concerning the design of a 400 N class side thruster for small ships. The side thrusters used in Korea are imported from abroad. The performance and durability of the imported products employed in Korea are not adequate, therefore the side thrusters which will be suitable for Korean domestic needs to be re-designed. The strength calculation of the side thruster was performed by KS standard. Strength calculation and design were made to meet design requirements. Structural analysis and safety factor analysis were carried out to confirm the validity of strength calculations and design. After manufacturing the bevel gear, a back lash test was conducted. We also conducted a no-load test, a rated load, and an overload test for a performance test and a durability test of the design while satisfying the design conditions.
In modern vehicle construction the search for means of weight reduction, improving durability, increasing comfort and raising body stiffness are issues of priority to the design engineer. The intelligent usage of many materials such as high strength steel, light-alloys and plastics enables a significant vehicle weight reduction to be achieved. The classical joining techniques used in the automobile industry need to be newly-evaluated since they often do not present workable solutions for such mixed-material connections, for example aluminium/steel. Calculation/simulation methods have made progress as a key factor for broader and more cost-effective implementation of structural bonding. This will lead to reduction of spotwelds and accelerate the car development. A special focus of the paper is the use of high strength steel grades. It will be shown that adhesive bonding is a key tool for yielding the potential of advanced high strength steel for low gauging without compromising the stiffness. The latest status of adhesive development has been described. Improvements with physical strength and glass temperature as well as of process relevant properties are shown. Also the situation regarding occupational hygiene is treated, showing that by further spotweld point reduction the emission around the working area can be even lowered against the current praxis. High performing lightweight design cannot longer do without high performing crash durable adhesives.
This paper simulates the hysteretic behavior of steel reinforced recycled concrete (SRRC) columns under cyclic loads using OpenSees software. The effective fiber model and displacement-based beam-column element in OpenSees is applied to each SRRC columns. The Concrete01 material model for recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) and Steel02 material model is proposed to perform the numerical simulation of columns. The constitutive models of RAC, profile steel and rebars in columns were assigned to each fiber element. Based on the modelling method, the analytical models of SRRC columns are established. It shows that the calculated hysteresis loops of most SRRC columns agree well with the test curves. In addition, the parameter studies (i.e., strength grade of RAC, stirrups strength, steel strength and steel ratio) on seismic performance of SRRC columns were also investigated in detail by OpenSees. The calculation results of parameter analysis show that SRRC columns suffered from flexural failure has good seismic performance through the reasonable design. The ductility and bearing capacity of columns increases as the increasing magnitude of steel strength, steel ratio and stirrups strength. Although the bearing capacity of columns increases as the strength grade of RAC increases, the ductility and energy dissipation capacity decreases gradually. Based on the test and numerical results, the flexural failure mechanism of SRRC columns were analysed in detail. The computing theories of the normal section of bearing capacity for the eccentrically loaded columns were adopted to calculate the nominal bending strength of SRRC columns subjected to vertical axial force under lateral cyclic loads. The calculation formulas of horizontal bearing capacity for SRRC columns were proposed based on their nominal bending strength.
Concrete-encased steel (CES) beam, in which structural steel is encased in a reinforced concrete (RC) section, is widely applied in high-rise buildings as transfer beams due to its high load-carrying capacity, great stiffness, and good durability. However, these CES beams are prone to shear failure because of the low shear span-to-depth ratio and the heavy load. Due to the high load-carrying capacity and the brittle failure process of the shear failure, the accurate strength prediction of CES beams significantly influences the assessment of structural safety. In current design codes, design formulas for predicting the shear strength of CES beams are based on the so-called "superposition method". This method indicates that the shear strength of CES beams can be obtained by superposing the shear strengths of the RC part and the steel shape. Nevertheless, in some cases, this method yields errors on the unsafe side because the shear strengths of these two parts cannot be achieved simultaneously. This paper clarifies the conditions at which the superposition method does not hold true, and the shear strength of CES beams is investigated using a compatible truss-arch model. Considering the deformation compatibility between the steel shape and the RC part, the method to obtain the shear strength of CES beams is proposed. Finally, the proposed model is compared with other calculation methods from codes AISC 360 (USA, North America), Eurocode 4 (Europe), YB 9082 (China, Asia), JGJ 138 (China, Asia), and AS/NZS 2327 (Australia/New Zealand, Oceania) using the available test data consisting of 45 CES beams. The results indicate that the proposed model can predict the shear strength of CES beams with sufficient accuracy and safety. Without considering the deformation compatibility, the calculation methods from the codes AISC 360, Eurocode 4, YB 9082, JGJ 138, and AS/NZS 2327 lead to excessively conservative or unsafe predictions.
