Technological Review on the Development of Metallic Armor Materials (금속 장갑재료의 개발기술 및 발전전망)

  • This paper describes the state of the art for the development of metallic armor materials which are mainly used as armor plates of the combat vehicles. Several important micro-structural features affecting ballistic properties of the metallic armor are discussed. Optimization of the strength and toughness balance of the metallic armor is necessary for the improvement of the ballistic performance resulting from maximizing the resistance to the penetration of the bullet and also to brittle failure of the plates. Understanding and control of the adiabatic shearing phenomenon developed remarkably during high strain rate deformation is needed to prevent brittle failure of the metallic armor materials.

  • The mechanical properties of bellows, such as the extensibility and the strength can be changed depending on the shape. For the shipbuilding material, it is favorable that the fatigue life is long due to the elastic property and the reduction of thermal stress in piping system. Nowadays, the domestic production and design of bellows are based on the E.J.M.A Code. Therefore, the design standard is in need because of much errors and lack of detailed analysis. In this study, it is attempted to find out the optimal shape of U-type bellows using the finite element method. The effective factors, mountain height, length, thickness, and number of mountains and the length of joint are considered and the proper values are chosen for the simulation. The results shows that if the number of mountains are reduced, the volume decreases while the stress increases. However, the number of mountains are increased, the volume increases above the standard volume and the stress obviously increases. In addition, the effect of the thickness of bellows on the stress is very large. Both of the volume and stress are decreasing at a certain lower value region.

  • Carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) composites have been widely used due to their great strength, stiffness and light weight. However, due to its anisotropy and inhomogeneous properties the machining process of CFRP composites is typically more complex than that of regular metals. Since there are many defects, such as delamination and tool wear during the machining process of CFRP composites, the optimization of this process is essential in improving the productivity. In this study, orthogonal machining of CFRP composites was performed to identify the machining characteristics of these materials. In addition, an experimental observation of delamination was investigated through the use of scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In these experiments, the cutting forces were measured and analyzed to determine the difference between machining of CFRP composites and metals. The comparison between the numerical models and experimental results was performed in terms of the maximum cutting forces.

Understanding the Mechanism of Hydrogen Adsorption into Metal Organic Frameworks (Metal-Organic Framework의 수소 흡착 메커니즘의 이해)

  • Hydrogen adsorption mechanism onto the porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has been studied by density functional theory calculation. The selected functionals for the predict ion of interact ion energies between hydrogen and potential adsorption sites of MOF was utilized after the evaluation with the various functionals for interaction energy of $H_2C_6H_6$ model system the adsorption energy of hydrogen molecule into MOF was investigated with the consideration of the favorable adsorption sites and the orientations. We also calculated the second favorable adsorption sites by geometry optimization using every combination of two first absorbed hydrogen molecules. Based on the calculation of first and second adsorption sites and energies, the hydrogen adsorption into MOF follows a cooperative mechanism in which the initial metal sites initiate the propagation of the hydrogen adsorption on the whole frameworks. In addition, it was found that the interaction strength between the simple benzene ring with hydrogen is significantly reinforced when the benzene ring has been incorporated into the framework of MOFs.

  • Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) have attracted much attention as promising materials for transparent conducting films (TCFs), thanks to their superior electrical conductivity, high mechanical strength, and complete flexibility. The CNT-based TCFs can be used in a variety of application fields as flexible, transparent electrodes, including touch panel screens, flexible electronics, transparent heaters, etc. First of all, this study investigated the effect of a variety of surfactants on the dispersion of SWCNTs in an aqueous solution. Following the optimization of the dispersion by surfactants, flexible TCFs were fabricated by spraying the CNT suspension onto poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) substrates. The sheet resistances of the TCFs having different surfactants were investigated with treatment in nitric acid ($HNO_3$) whose concentration and period of treatment time were varied. It seems that the $HNO_3$ removes the surfactants from and is simultaneously doped into the SWCNT network, reducing the contact resistance between CNTs. TCFs were characterized by UV-VIS spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and four-point probe.

A Design Method of Gear Trains Using a Genetic Algorithm

  • The design of gear train is a kind of mixed problems which have to determine various types of design variables; i,e., continuous, discrete, and integer variables. Therefore, the most common practice of optimum design using the derivative of objective function has difficulty in solving those kinds of problems and the optimum solution also depends on initial guess because there are many sophisticated constrains. In this study, the Genetic Algorithm is introduced for the optimum design of gear trains to solve such problems and we propose a genetic algorithm based gear design system. This system is applied for the geometrical volume(size) minimization problem of the two-stage gear train and the simple planetary gear train to show that genetic algorithm is better than the conventional algorithm solving the problems that have continuous, discrete, and integer variables. In this system, each design factor such as strength, durability, interference, contact ratio, etc. is considered on the basis of AGMA standards to satisfy the required design specification and the performance with minimizing the geometrical volume(size) of gear trains

  • In the microcell or picocell-based system the frequent movements of mobiles bring about excessive traffics Into the networks. A mobile location estimation mechanism can facilitate both efficient resource allocation and better QoS provisioning through handoff optimization. Existing location estimation schemes consider only LOS model and have poor performance in presence of multi-path and shadowing. In this paper we study multi-criteria decision making which can increase estimation accuracy by considering other multiple decision parameters than the received signal strength.

Economic performance of cable supported bridges

  • A new cable-supported bridge model consisting of suspension parts, self-anchored cable-stayed parts and earth-anchored cable-stayed parts is presented. The new bridge model can be used for suspension bridges, cable-stayed bridges, cable-stayed suspension bridges, and partially earth-anchored cable-stayed bridges by varying parameters. Based on the assumption that each structural member is in either an axial compressive or tensile state, and the stress in each member is equal to the allowable stress of the material, the material quantity for each component is calculated. By introducing the unit cost of each type of material, the estimation formula for the cost of the new bridge model is developed. Numerical examples show that the results from the estimation formula agree well with that from the real projects. The span limit of cable supported bridge depends on the span-to-height ratio and the density-to-strength ratio of cables. Finally, a parametric study is illustrated aiming at the relations between three key geometrical parameters and the cost of the bridge model. The optimization of the new bridge model indicates that the self-anchored cable-stayed part is always the dominant part with the consideration of either the lowest total cost or the lowest unit cost. It is advisable to combine all three mentioned structural parts in super long span cable supported bridges to achieve the most excellent economic performance.

Blast resistance of a ceramic-metal armour subjected to air explosion: A parametric study

  • Nowadays, composite plates are widely used as high-strength structures to fabricate a dynamic loading-resistant armours. In this study, the shock load is applied by an explosion of spherical TNT charge at a specified distance from the circular composite plate. The composite plate contains a two-layer ceramic-metal armour and a poly-methyl methacrylate (PMMA) target layer. The dynamic behavior of the composite armour has been investigated by measuring the transferred effective stress and maximum deflection into the target layer. For this purpose, the simulation of the blast loading upon the composite structure was performed by using the load-blast enhanced (LBE) procedure in Ls-Dyna software. The effect of main process parameters such as the thickness of layers, and scaled distance has been examined on the specific stiffness of the structure using response surface method. After validating the results by comparing with the experimental results, the optimal values for these parameters along with the regression equations for transferred effective stress and displacement to the target have been obtained. Finally, the optimal values of input parameters have been specified to achieve minimum transferred stress and displacement, simultaneously with reducing the weight of the structure.

Development of Durability Estimation and Design Systems of Worm Gears (웜기어의 강도평가 및 설계시스템 개발에 관한 연구)

  • We developed the durability estimation and design systems to minimize the volume, considering the durability, efficiency, and design requirements of worm gears. That is, we consider each kind of factors affecting on durability on the basis of AGMA Standard for the cylindrical and double-enveloping worm gears. We also estimate input power on the basis of wear and durability, bending strength and deflection of worm shaft, and we developed the durability estimation and design systems of power transmission worm gears introducing the optimal design method on the personal computer to be easily used in field. Also, we developed a method which converts the design variables obtained from the optimal design method to integer values(number of worm threads, number of worm threads, number of worm wheel teeth, etc.,) to be used in real design and production. The developed durability estimation and design method can be easily applied to the design of worm gears used as power transmission devices in machineries and is expected to be used for weight minimization of worm gear unit.
