  • The main functions of excavator are mainly carried out by excavator attachments such as arm and boom. These components should be designed to be light as well as durable enough because their effects on the whole structure are significant. In this paper, an optimization procedure for lightweight design considering fatigue strength for excavator attachments is presented. The weight of attachments and allowable fatigue stresses at critical areas are used as objective function and constraints, respectively, in which design variables are the thickness of the plates of attachments. The simulated annealing search method is adopted for a global optimization solution. Besides, the response surface method using the artificial neural network is used to simulate constraint function for the sake of practical fast calculation. Some example case of optimization is presented here for a sample excavator. This weight optimization is expected to contribute to a considerable improvement of fuel efficiency of excavator.

  • In this paper, a numerical procedure is proposed for achieving the minimum cost design of reinforced concrete polygonal column cross-sections under compression and biaxial bending. A methodology is developed to integrate the metaheuristic algorithm Quantum Particle Swarm Optimization (QPSO) with an algorithm for the evaluation of the strength of reinforced concrete cross-sections under combined axial load and biaxial bending, according to the design criteria of Brazilian Standard ABNT NBR 6118:2014. The objective function formulation takes into account the costs of concrete, reinforcement, and formwork. The cross-section dimensions, the number and diameter of rebar and the concrete strength are taken as discrete design variables. This methodology is applied to polygonal cross-sections, such as rectangular sections, rectangular hollow sections, and L-shaped cross-sections. To evaluate the efficiency of the methodology, the optimal solutions obtained were compared to results reported by other authors using conventional methods or alternative optimization techniques. An additional study investigates the effect on final costs for an alternative parametrization of rebar positioning on the cross-section. The proposed optimization method proved to be efficient in the search for optimal solutions, presenting consistent results that confirm the importance of using optimization techniques in the design of reinforced concrete structures.

  • The manual modification of stamping die has widely been used in order to reduce springback after sheet metal forming. When UHSS (Ultra High Strength Steel) is used in sheet metal forming, the die design considering springback compensation is more difficult because higher strength sheet has more springback. In this study, the optimization method was used in order to design die geometry considering springback compensation after forming of 1.2GPa UHSS. Die geometries were defined as design variables and the springback distance from the die surface was conducted as object function in optimization process. The optimized die geometry considering springback compensation was performed using finite element and optimization analysis. The simulation results such as thickness distribution and springback amount were compared with measured data using 3D optical measurement system (GOM ARGUS, ATOS). And the prediction of springback amount showed a good agreement within test results.

  • A computer-aided design system of involute cylindrical gears(spur and helical gears) for power transmission is developed, in which the volume of a gear unit is minimized with satisfying various design constraints. As the design constraints, bending strength and pitting resistance of AGMA 218.01, scoring of Dudley's flash temperature, contact ratio, and involute interference of pinion are considered and effective factors for strength calculation(life, reliability, hardness ratio, load distribution, velocity, etc.) are also included. This complicated nonlinear optimization problem is solved by using ALM(Augmented-Lagrange-Multiplier) method with self scaling BFGS(Broydon-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno) method employed for unconstrained optimization programming. This design method can be easily applied to designing power transmission gear unit in the machines of various kinds. It is expected for the proposed method to be a contribution for an automated design of gear unit towards weight minimization, miniaturization and high strength of gear unit.

  • Recently, the concept of structural design against instability has been proposed in the chassis parts. The design considerations of lower control arm of chassis parts under the buckling and durability strengths are the general. More precisely, this paper considers a specific application and associated optimization problem for two strengths, where the design variables are the physical or geometric dimensions for skins and stiffeners. The objective is the minimization of the total weight, while optimization constrains involve reserve or improve factors for the buckling and durability strengths. The most important features are related to the numerical simulations for the estimation of buckling factor and their sensitivities by means of nonlinear and linear finite element analyses. The bucking and durability strength analyses, and the morping geometries are directly included in the optimization problem and the modified design is formulated. As a result, the optimal structure with stable behavior is obtained or increases the buckling and durability strengths of parts. Most of design problems for structures exposed to elastic instability can be formulated and solved.

  • In this study, the weight of the platen was reduced using the structural strength analysis and topology optimization design of the extruder by finite element analysis. The main components of the extruder such as the stem and billet, were modeled, and the maximum stress and safety factor were verified through structural strength analysis. Based on the results of the structural strength analysis, the optimal phase that satisfies the limitation given to the design area of the structure and maximizes or minimizes the objective function was obtained through a numerical method. The platen was redesigned with a phase-optimal shape, the weight was reduced by 40% (from the initial weight of 11.1 tons to 6.6 tons), and the maximum stress was 147.49 MPa safety factor of 1.86.

  • There is an over head hoist transporter(OHT) by the system for delivering the wafer in semiconductor processing. The transfer system consist of carrier, vehicle, rail and support. The Tail supporting the wafer and the transfer system should maintain enough strength and stiffness. To achieve lightness and enough strength and stiffness, optimization algorithm should be introduced in design process. In this study, two kinds of section shapes as L-type, C-type is carried out the structure analysis and optimization. Total weight of rail is to be minimized while displacement should not exceed limit. To improve the initial model, topology optimization is done by the plain problem. Size optimization is done with 3D solid element and PLBA algorithm, the RQP algorithm. The weight of optimum model as L-type, C-type is decreased by 2.3%, 10% respectively. It is improved better than the initial model in the strength and stiffness of the structure.

  • Recently, several vehicle manufacturers have used the aluminum side door impact beam in order to reduce the vehicle weight and costs. But, the aluminum impact beam may cause the reduction of the side door strength and the side impact capability. Therefore, this paper optimized the section dimension and section shape of the side door impact beam to satisfy the legislation of the side door strength and maintain the side impact capability as well as steel impact beam

  • Reinforced concrete (RC) flat slabs should be designed based on punching shear strength. As part of this study, machine learning (ML) algorithms were developed to accurately predict the punching shear strength of RC flat slabs without shear reinforcement. It is based on Bayesian optimization (BO), combined with four standard algorithms (Support vector regression, Decision trees, Random forests, Extreme gradient boosting) on 446 datasets that contain six design parameters. Furthermore, an analysis of feature importance is carried out by Shapley additive explanation (SHAP), in order to quantify the effect of design parameters on punching shear strength. According to the results, the BO method produces high prediction accuracy by selecting the optimal hyperparameters for each model. With R2 = 0.985, MAE = 0.0155 MN, RMSE = 0.0244 MN, the BO-XGBoost model performed better than the original XGBoost prediction, which had R2 = 0.917, MAE = 0.064 MN, RMSE = 0.121 MN in total dataset. Additionally, recommendations are provided on how to select factors that will influence punching shear resistance of RC flat slabs without shear reinforcement.
