Buckling Strength Increment of Curved Panels Due to Rotational Stiffness of Closed-Section Ribs Under Uniaxial Compression

  • Recently, there have been studies about the increasing effect on the local plate buckling strength of flat plates when longitudinally stiffened with closed-section ribs and an approximate solution to quantitatively estimate these effects were suggested for flat plates. Since there are few studies to utilize such increasing effect on curved panels and a proper design method is not proposed, thus, this study aims to numerically evaluate such effect due to the rotational stiffness of closed-section ribs on curved panels and to propose an approximate method for estimating the buckling strength. Three-dimensional finite element models were set up using a general structural analysis program ABAQUS and a series of parametric numerical analyses were conducted in order to examine the variation of buckling stresses along with the rotational stiffness of closed-section ribs. By using a methodology that combine the strength increment factor due to the restraining effect by closed-section ribs and the buckling coefficient of the panel curvature, the approximate solutions for the estimation of buckling strength were suggested. The validity of the proposed methods was verified through a comparative study with the numerical analysis results.

Approach of Self-mixing Interferometry Based on Particle Swarm Optimization for Absolute Distance Estimation

  • To accurately extract absolute distance information from a self-mixing interferometry (SMI) signal, in this paper we propose an approach based on a particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm instead of frequency estimation for absolute distance. The algorithm is utilized to search for the global minimum of the fitness function that is established from the self-mixing signal to find out the actual distance. A resolution superior to $25{\mu}m$ in the range from 3 to 20 cm is obtained by experimental measurement, and the results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed approach in comparison with interpolated FFT. The influence of different external feedback strength parameters and different inertia weights in the algorithm is discussed as well.

  • Muscle based face image synthesis is one of the most realistic approach to realize life-like agent in computer. Facial muscle model is composed of facial tissue elements and muscles. In this model, forces are calculated effecting facial tissue element by contraction of each muscle strength, so the combination of each muscle parameter decide a specific facial expression. Now each muscle parameter is decided on trial and error procedure comparing the sample photograph and generated image using our Muscle-Editor to generate a specific face image. In this paper, we propose the strategy of automatic estimation of facial muscle parameters from 2D marker movement using neural network. This also 3D motion estimation from 2D point or flow information in captered image under restriction of physics based face model.

  • 마이크로/피코셀 환경 하에서 이동체의 빈번한 위치 및 셀간 이동으로 인하여 많은 부가 트래픽이 발생한다. 이동체 위치 추정을 이용함으로서 효율적인 채널 할당과 QoS를 보장하는 핸드오프가 가능하다. 기존의 이동체 위치 추정 방안들은 단지 LOS 환경을 기반으로 하여 제시되었고 다중 경로 환경 또는 shadowing 환경에서는 성능의 감소를 가져왔다. 본 연구에서는 NLOS 환경, 그리고 수신 신호 세기 이외에 부정확한 다수의 위치 결정 파라미터를 고려함으로서 추정의 정확성을 증가시키는 새로운 위치 추정 방안들을 제시한다.

Effect of Boundary Conditions of Failure Pressure Models on Reliability Estimation of Buried Pipelines

  • This paper presents the effect of boundary conditions in various failure pressure models published for the estimation of failure pressure. Furthermore, this approach is extended to the failure prediction with the aid of a failure probability model. The first order Taylor series expansion of the limit state function is used in order to estimate the probability of failure associated with each corrosion defect in buried pipelines for long exposure period with unit of years. A failure probability model based on the von-Mises failure criterion is adapted. The log-normal and standard normal probability functions for varying random variables are adapted. The effects of random variables such as defect depth, pipe diameter, defect length, fluid pressure, corrosion rate, material yield stress, material ultimate tensile strength and pipe thickness on the failure probability of the buried pipelines are systematically investigated for the corrosion pipeline by using an adapted failure probability model and varying failure pressure model.

  • The social and economic level of damages might be highly increased in the case of wide-area black-outages, because of heavy dependence of electricity. Therefore, the development of a wide-area protection relay intelligence techniques is required to prevent massive power outages and minimize the impact strength at failure. The frequency monitoring and prediction for wide-area protection relaying intelligence has been considered as an important technology. In this paper, a network-based frequency monitoring system developed for wide-area protection relay intelligence is presented. In addition, conventional techniques for frequency estimation are compared, and a method for advanced frequency estimation and measurement to improve the precision is proposed. Finally, an integrated monitoring system called K-FNET(Korea-Frequency Monitoring Network) is implemented based on the GPS and various energy monitoring cases are studied.

  • Deicing salt has been generally used for prevention of a road freezing in winter, and the amount is increasing every year. However, deicing salt may induce the decrease of bond strength, surface scaling, and environmental pollution, etc. The purpose of this paper is to suggest the fundamental data on safety and durability for concrete structures through the estimation of characteristics of chloride penetration with deicer types. According to the test results, as age of concrete is increased, chloride penetration depth is also increased independent of deicer types. However, there is no remarkable difference between deicer types. And when the estimation of chloride diffusion is carried out by immersion test, diffusion coefficient is decreased with ages, and short-term estimation may overestimate the coefficient.

Burst pressure estimation of Alloy 690 axial cracked steam generator U-bend tubes using finite element damage analysis

  • This paper presents numerical estimation of burst pressures of axial cracked U-bend tubes, considering the U-bending process analysis. The validity of the FE simulations is confirmed by comparing with published experimental data. From parametric analyses, it is shown that existing EPRI burst pressure estimation equations for straight tubes can be conservatively used to estimate burst pressures of the U-bend tubes. This is due to the increase in yield strength during the U-bending process. The degree of conservatism would decrease with increasing the bend radius and with increasing the crack depth.
