Optical analysis is necessary to optimize light emitting diode (LED) safety street lighting. In this study, optical analysis was conducted for 100 W LED safety street lighting. Experimental research on such a single LED was the first undertaken. Simulation modeling based on the optical properties of the single LED has compared between average road illuminances and has them analyzed with Korean Industrial Standards for LED safety street lighting (KS C7658:2009). The simulation results demonstrated that the illumination performance (average road illuminance) was 75.3 lx at a height of 4 m and an area of $32\;m^2$, 45.25 lx at a height of 5 m and an area of $72\;m^2$, and 30.05 lx at a height of 6 m and an area of $128\;m^2$. 100 W safety street lighting (model CE180-ST-OS) designed by simulation was also compared between product and 100 W simulation modeling, and error rates averaged 5.6%. The 100 W LED safety street lighting base designed in simulation modeling was proven by comparison experiments. Through the simulations and the corresponding analysis, it was found that the tested 100 W LED safety street lamp had reasonable performance. The design method for LED safety street lamps has been summarized based on the optical analysis.
Since it is frequently reported, nowadays, that a variety of accidents happen in association with a street light, it is urgently demanded to take necessary measures to cope with such situation. In this aspect, it is important to study the grounding characteristics of a street light because most of the accidents are related to grounding. In this paper, therefore, the grounding characteristics of a street light have been investigated based on layers by using CDEGS. As a result of simulation, the soil resistivity turns out to be extremely important determining the characteristics of a grounding system.
With rapid urbanization and reckless urban development in the 21st century, the urban environment has gradually gotten worse, and urban heat island effect has been dramatically intensified. Thus, the importance of street greenery that can mitigate the urban heat island effect has further been highlighted. In this regard, this study was aimed at selecting suitable plant species for street greenery to reduce the urban heat island effect. Towards this end, five roads located in Seocho-gu, Seoul were selected as study sites, and plant species composition and difference of surface temperature were compared and analyzed in relation to the light transmittance. The street with the greatest temperature difference is Bangbae-ro(Platanus occidentalis). On the other hand, the road with the lowest temperature difference is Nambusunhwan-doro(Metasequoia Glyptostroboides). The effect of temperature reduction was found to be associated with light transmittance.Bangbae-ro(Platanus occidentalis) with the lowest light transmittance showed the highest temperature difference and Nambusunhwan-doro(Metasequoia Glyptostroboides) with the highest light transmittance showed the lowest temperature difference. It is analyzed that there are most differences in temperature when the amount of lights coming in between the crown is small. The temperature reduction effect can be obtained by planting deciduous broad-leaved trees. Also species with dense crown and broad width of crown will be able to maximize the effect of temperature reduction. In future studies, it will be necessary to expand the other species of trees in the street, and analyze the germicidal trees and shrubs as well as the differences in the packaging materials.

Since a sophisticated location determination technology (LDT) is necessary for accurate positioning in urban area environments, numerous studies related to the LDT using the RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification) technology have been implemented for real-time positioning and data transferring. However, there are still lots of unsolved questions especially regarding what to use as base stations and what are corresponding results under the intrinsic complexity of alignment and configuration of components used for the RFID positioning. This study proposes the street light fixtures as base stations where the RFID receivers will be embedded for the mobile tracking scheme. As street light fixtures are usually installed at a certain distance interval, they can be used as base stations for the RFID receiver installation. Using the principle of the single row triangle network, the RFID receiver organization is determined based on the experiments such as recognition distance measurement and tag position accuracy estimation at inside and outside of the single row triangle network. The results verify that the mobile tracking scheme which uses RFID-embedded street light fixtures, suggested and configured in this study, is effective for the real-time outdoor positioning.
Streetscape plays on important role in urban cities. Characteristics of streets is basically defined by the building facade, signs, plants and paving during the daytime. However at night, street receives a new appearance due to the shop light from the buildings, exterior lightings, signboards and street light, and it creates most of the image of the streets. This study aims to analyze the luminous environment and its subjective image of two different pedestrian's commercial streets. Insa-dong street and Myungdong street were chosen for the study. Horizontal illuminance and luminance on building surface, advertisement billboards and pedestrian road were measured. Thirty students were asked to rate the five scaled questionnaire on their subjective images of the streets. Statistical analysis including profile, correlation and T-test are conducted and some findings are discussed
We develop the 60 W class hybrid solar LED street lamp controller. The controller is providing power via an inverter in the day with the least solar cell and battery and charging the battery for the ESS, acts as a power failure, the built-in battery. Rated output of the fabricated LED street lamp is 300 W or greater battery capacity 300 Wh, discharge time 10 hr, LED street lamp efficiency showed a very high level of light efficiency by about 127 lm/W. In addition, as a result of light distribution pattern according to the distance and the light intensity measurement will be able to ensure a very high quality, show the constant brightness in the distance from the road lights 6 m is about 35~40 lux in uniformity ratio. The proposed hybrid solar LED street lamp system showed a high energy capacity of approximately 1.5 to 152.7% power generation efficiency than typical conventional solar street lamp.

LEDs are becoming the most suitable candidate replacing traditional fluorescent street-light lamps because of its energy efficiency and high brightness. Furthermore, most countries are urging to pursue energy savings in conjunction with IT and sensor network. In order to conserve energy of LED lamp and ensure the safety of pedestrian, we propose a new smart control method for LED light system based on USN using compound sensors, such as illuminance, motion, temperature and humidity sensor. An elaborate simulation shows that the proposed system with a smart control based switching can reduce the energy by 40%, compared to the previous street-light system with a fixed time based switching.
This study deals with the roundabout traffic accidents by traffic impeding factor. The purpose of this study is to comparatively analyze the characteristics of accidents and to develop the accident models. In pursuing the above, this study used a statistical program SPSS 20.0 to analyze 2,342 accidents occurred within 79 roundabouts in Korea. The main results are as follows. First, 4 accident models which were all statistically significant were developed. Second, the traffic volume and width of right-turn-only lane were analyzed to be common variable in the bus stop related models. The variables such as right-turn-only lane, street light, turning radius of entry lane were selected as specific variables. Especially street light and turning radius of entry lane were evaluated to have negative effects to the accidents. It is, therefore, essential to install the street light and place a sufficient turning radius in order to reduce the roundabout accidents. Finally, the traffic volume and number of entry lane were analyzed to be common variable in the on-street parking related models. Also, the width of right-turn-only lane and bus stop were evaluate to be specific variables in the model with on-street parking. This can be expected to give some implications to making the accident reduction guidelines.
This study attempted to design lights with Type II distribution suitable for LED street lights based on the regulations of street light distribution developed by the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA). The shape of an asymmetric lens, different from that of a rotationally symmetric lens, cannot be generated using a simple mathematical formula. In the first trial, the outline of the lens was fixed and simulated to confirm the distribution type. Following ISENA regulations, some problems that occurred during simulations and repeating was be modified that process is how we detected errors. Through optical research and simulations, a lens conforming to the regulations of Type II very short, Type II short, and Type II medium distributions was developed. A prototype was developed using simulation data and it was subjected to distribution tests. The results show that it can compare with property of Type II distribution.
