Acute and chronic toxicities of sediment elutriate and surface water samples collected at Lake Shihwa were evaluated using standard toxicity testing organisms including Vibrio fischeri, Daphnia magna and Moina macrocopa. Acute exposure resulted in toxic effects in all surface water or sediment elutriate samples, except for those collected from the reed swamp and Okgu stream. The rainy season influenced the toxicity of the water samples, presumably either by dilution of point discharge or through introduction of non-point source contaminants through runoff. In the sediment, elutriate and surface water samples, copper was detected above potentially lethal concentration, which may in part explain the observed toxicity. Considering acute toxicities of the surface water streams that direct to the Lake Shihwa, efforts should be warranted to control and reduce discharge of point and non-point sources along Lake Shihwa.

The grain size characteristics of river sediments and the characteristics of bedrock were investigated for the 24km section of the Dong River upstream of the Han River. The bedrock of the study area is various limestone belonging to the Paleozoic Choseon limestone group, and Mesozoic sandstone and conglomerate occur in some areas. Most of the river channel is made of limestone, and most of the river bottom is covered with fluvial sediments. More than 70% of these sediments are sandstone and conglomerate, rather than limestone which forms the basis of the valley. Sediment particles seem to have been supplied upstream of the study area rather supplied from the slope near of the channel. It is difficult to find the statistically significant difference in the shape of the sediment particles of limestones and non-limestones. However, limestones has platy forms rather than block forms, it can be assumed that the limestone was supplied from the surrounding valley wall and transported over a short distance. The particle sizes of DG1~DG2(the upstream section) are decreasing in the downstream direction. However, at DG3, which is a tributary, Jijangcheon, confluence particle size increases and at DG4 particle size increases more. In the case of DG4, it may be influenced by the influx of tributaries, but it also can be supposed as the impact of the large flood in 2002. In the downstream parts(DG5~DG7), the particle size decreases exponentially with distance. The rebound strength of stream sediments and bedrock was measured by using Schmidt hammer. Limestone showed lower rebound strength than non-limestone. According to the results of the sediment and bedrock, it can be seen that the sandstone and conglomerate with high rebound values pass through valley with the relatively low strength limestone. The sediments of limestone were decreased in grain size more rapidly than those of limestone sediments.
In the study, the feasibility of deposit soil in river and stream bed as a subsitute for conventional plant soil was investigated through the analysis of soil characteristics and germination/growth rate for 75 days. Proper mixtures among sediments from various places were compared to optimize the germination and growth rate of plant in the ratio of 2 : 1 and 3 : 1 (sand : deposit). From the results, it could be concluded that the sediment mixed 3 : 1 showed most favorable germination and growth conditions for pansy and the sediment containing enough amount of silt and clay components showed most favorable conditions for marigold. Consequently, the feasibility of sediments as a substitutional plant soil was evaluated to be high, once the sediments were properly mixed for each specific plant.

Total extraction of stream sediments in the Kwangyang mine area shows their significant pollution with most trace metals such as Cr, Co, Fe, Pb, Cu, Ni, Zn and Cd, due to sulfide oxidation in waste dumps. Calculations of enrichment factor shows that Chonam-ri creek sediments are more severely contaminated than Sagok-ri sediments. Using the weak acid (0.1N HCl) extraction and sequential extraction techniques, the transport and sediment-water partitioning of heavy metals in mine drainage were examined for contaminated sediments in the Chonam-ri and Sagok-ri creeks of the Kwangyang Au-Ag mine area. Calculated distribution coefficient (Kd) generally decreases in the order of Pb $\geq$Al > Cu > Mn > Zn > Co > Ni $\geq$ Cd. Sequential extraction of Chonam-ri creek sediments shows that among non-residual fractions the Fe-Mn oxide fraction is most abundant for most of the metals. This indicates that precipitation of Fe hydroxides plays an important role in regulating heavy metal concentrations in water, as shown by field observations.
The Hg, Cd, Cu, Mn, and Zn in bottom sediments of han river and their tributaries were analyzed to evaluate the seasonal variations of heavy metals. Leaching tests were also performed for estimation of availability of heavy metal retention in sediments. Sediments of Anyang stream showed the highest concentration of heavy metal in the sediment samples. Heavy metal concentration was heavily depended upon the heavy metal source of tributaries of han river and particle distribution. Clay and silt had higher concentration of heavy metals than very fine san and fine sand due to difference of retention capability of heavy metal. The highest concentration of heavy metal was observed in bottom sediments irrespective of sites investigated. Heavy metals and ignition loss showed positive relations, and higher relationships with p-value <0.01 were observed between copper and lead. copper and zinc, and depended on the pH condition of leaching test, and leachated fraction increased with decrease of the pH.
This paper describes the ecological structure and function of riparian zone, and their historical changes with land-use. The riparian zone consists of valley floor landform and riparian vegetation. The functions discussed are attenuation of sunlight energy, input of leaves and needles, contribution of woody debris to streams, and retention of flowing material out of transport. These primary functions directly or indirectly influence water and sediment qualities of streams, bars and floodplains, and thereby aquatic biota. Temporal changes in a hydrological system and riparian ecosystem were examined with reference to land-use conversin in order to understand the linkages between these two systems in Toikanbetsu River. The influences of channelization and land-use on discharge of suspended sediment and wetland vegetation was also investigated in Kushiro Marsh. These two examples suggested that the ecological functions of riparian zone have been degraded as flood control and reclamation works have expanded in the past twenty years The author proposes river restoration planning by preserving or creating landscape elements based on the concepts of sustaining physical and ecological linkages.

To assessment the disturbances of the Namgang caused by dam construction, upstream area was selected for the reference reach and downstream area was selected for the comparison reach. And these reaches were surveyed and analyzed according to the assessment criteria of the river disturbances. The artificial factors of river disturbances were classified as river improvement works, dam construction and aggregate dredging. The indexes were physical factors as like epifaunal (bottom), embeddedness, velocity/depth regime, sediment deposition, channel flow status, channel alteration, frequency of riffles, bank stability, vegetative protection, riparian zone etc.The assessment results showed 46% of the assessment criteria which was serious status in dam downstream area and 89.5% of it which was excellent status in dam upstream. Finally, the results showed that physical river environment in downstream area was disturbed by the discharge control and the interception of sediment discharge by dam, consequently this disturbance give rise to impact of ecosystem in river.

Developed at Colorado State University, CASC2D-SED is a physically-based model simulating the hydrologic response of a watershed to a distributed rainfall field. The time-dependent processes include: precipitation, interception, infiltration, surface runoff and channel routing, upland erosion, transport and sedimentation. CASC2D-SED is applied to Goodwin Creek, Mississippi. The watershed covers 21 $\textrm{km}^2$ and has been extensively monitored both at the outlet and at several internal locations by the ARS-NSL at Oxford, MS. The model has been calibrated and validated using rainfall data from 16 meteorological stations,6 stream gaging stations and 6 sediment gaging stations. Sediment erosion/deposition rates by size fraction are predicted both in space and time. Geovisualization, a powerful data exploration technique based on GIS technology, is used to analyze and display the dynamic output time series generated by the CASC2D-SED model.
The riverbed structures and heavy metal concentrations of the sediments in the Naktong River, Western Naktong River, and Suyoung Stream were investigated, and then the correlationships between heavy metals were examined. Naktong River was the deepest among the three streams. The deepest and the shallowest sites were site 11(11.58m) and 9(3.35m) in Naktong River, site 7(6.25m) and 4(2.06m) in Western Naktong River, add site 8(2.89m) and 1(0.61m) in Suyoung Stream, respectively. The mean concentration of Cd(45.79ppm) was higher in the sediment of Western Naktong River than in other two streams and those of Pb(76.25ppm), Cr(48.13ppm), and Cu(77.50ppm) were higher in the sediment of Suyovng Stream than in other two streams. The analytical results for correlationships between heavy metals showed that Cu was highly correlated with Cr and Pb was very highly correlated with Cr and Cu in Naktong River. Cu was relatively highly correlated with Cd and Cr and Cr was highly correlated with Pb in Western Naktong River Cd was relatively higlky correlated with Pb and Cu and Cr and Cd, Pb, Cu and Pb, Cr were highly correlated in Suyoung Stream.
BACKGROUND: Mine drainage from metal mining districts is a well-recognized source of environmental contamination. Oxidation of metal sulfides in mines, mine dumps and tailing impoundments produces acidic, metal-rich waters that can contaminate the local surface water and soil. METHODS AND RESULTS: This experiment was carried out to investigate the pollution assessment of heavy metal on the water quality of mine drainage, paddy soils and sediment in lower watershed affected by mine drainage of the Sambo mine. The average concentrations of dissolved Cd (0.018~0.035 mg/L) in mine drainage discharged from the main waste rock dumps(WRD) was higher than the water quality standards (0.01 mg/L) for agricultural water in Korea. Also, the average concentrations of dissolved Zn, Fe and Mn were higher than those of recommended maximum concentrations (Zn 2.0, Fe 5.0, Mn 0.2 mg/L) of trace metal in irrigation water proposed by FAO (1994). The average contents of Pb and Zn in paddy soils was higher than those of standard level for soil contamination(Pb 200, Zn 300 mg/kg) in agricultural soil by Soil Environmental Conservation Act in Korea. Also, the concentrations of Cd, Pb and Zn in sediment were higher than those of standard level for soil contamination (Cd 10, Pb 400, Zn 600 mg/L) in waterway soil by Soil Environmental Conservation Act in Korea. The enrichment factor (EFc) of heavy metals in stream sediments were in the order as Cd>Pb>Zn> As>Cu>Cr>Ni. Also, the geoaccumulation index (Igeo) of heavy metals in stream sediments were in the order as Zn>Cd>Pb>Cu>As>Cr>Ni, specially, the geoaccumulation index (Igeo) of Zn (Igeo 3.1~6.2) were relatively higher than that of other metals in sediment. CONCLUSION(s): The results indicate that stream water and sediment were affected by mine drainage discharged from the Sambo mine at least to a distance of 1 km downstream (SN-1, SN-2) of the mine water discharge point.
