  • This study was performed to design and develop an ergonomic equipment for strawberry sorting and packing in agricultural working environments. Potential risk of work related musculo-skeletal disorders associated with farm workers performing strawberry sorting and packing was analyzed through interviews, field surveys, work measurement, and working posture evaluation. For the evaluation of working posture, we used REBA, OWAS, and RULA assessment methods to identify multi-factorial risk factors. Based on the result of comprehensive assessment, a new concept of multi-level rotating table for strawberry sorting and packing was proposed to modify awkward working postures and improve the effectiveness of the farm work. Finally, the characteristics and effectiveness of new equipment was discussed in terms of improvements in productivity, safety, and subjective ratings of farm workers. The results of analysis showed that working conditions improved significantly.

  • This paper aims to study regional difference in strawberry farming technology and its causal factors based on the survey of controlled strawberry farmers in three major strawberry cultivating regions, which are Nonsan county of Chungnam Province, Damyang County of Junnam Province and Guchang County of Kyungnam Province. There are differences in variety adoption, packaging and grading method which cause the farming income gap among these regions. Farmers of Guchang County, who adopt new variety Yeobong and packing system, raised highest gross receipts but ranked next to Damyang in terms of net income because of high packing cost. Farmers of Nonsan County earned lowest income because of poor quality and low price in spite of adopting packing cost saving method. Therefore, results of this study shows that successful farming technology depend on whether or not farmers adopt market oriented technology. It is suggested that direction of strawberry farming technology should focus on adopting new varieties which can contribute to increasing farmers' paid price and developing technology of reducing cost such as labor saving and packing machine.

  • Currently, amount of export strawberry has been continuously increased to ship many south Asia countries, including Hong Kong and Singapore. In the distribution process, significant damage to the quality has been caused depending on the environmental conditions. Gray mold disease caused by Botrytis cinerea has been known as major damage to the export strawberry, and the disease was caused during shipping and distribution to the final consumers. This study was performed to assess the relationship between pathogen density in packing shed and disease incidence of gray mold during storage period. Maximum gray mold disease incidence in storage period was up to 16% with low temperature condition ($4^{\circ}C$). At room temperature condition, the disease incidence reached up to 100% even densities of the pathogen spore were recorded relatively low in the packing shed. As results of the study, the correlation between pathogen density in the air and disease occurrence clearly clarified.

  • Effect of several PLA films on strawberry packaging was investigated. Three types of PLA film (non-perforated PLA1, perforated films of PLA2 and PLA3) were used for packing strawberry and the fruit quality was measured during 6 day storage at 10. For comparison, two types of OPP/PE film (non-perforated OPP1 and perforated OPP2) were used for strawberry packaging. Weight loss of all the treatments was below 0.12% after 6 day, seeming to be in tolerable range. PLA3 package showed the best retention in fruit firmness, PLA2 and PLA3 packages the least changes in acidity, and PLA2 package gave the least changes of soluble solid content and vitamin C content. There have been no differences in surface color among packages. Perforated PLA films could be effective for use as packaging of strawberry.

  • Staphylococcus aureus is spread worldwide and can result in food poisoning outbreaks. Among samples collected from soil, water, protected houses, packing houses, employees, strawberries, and leaves, and analyzed for S. aureus contamination, 16% samples 'showed S. aureus contamination, particularly on employees' hands, scissors, and strawberries. Examination of enterotoxins A, B, and C genes of S. aureus by PCR revealed sea and seb in 92 and 38% of total strains, respectively, whereas sec was not detected. In conclusion, implementation of Good Agricultural Practice is necessary for preventing food-borne diseases of staphylococcal origin, thereby ensuring the safety of farm-to-table products.
