From the perspective of the proactive behavior for changing strategies in a global market, this study aims to identify whether performance feedback influences firms' decisions to pursue strategic alliances. This study examines the effects of performance feedback on performance when firms use strategic alliances. Design/methodology - To analyze the impact of performance feedback on forming an international strategic alliance, this study adopt the concept of performance feedback to develop a research model and our hypotheses. Thus, this study used a two-stage least squares unbalanced panel data analysis with random effects. This study is based on 24,543 observations from Korean manufacturing firms from 2007 to 2016. Findings - The results show that firms pursue the formation of strategic alliances more actively, if their past financial and R&D performance are lower than their aspiration level, based on the result of performance feedback. An in split sample analysis for examining the effect of a firm's technology sophistication based on the OECD's classification, negative innovation performance discrepancy has positive effects on the probability of international alliance in high-tech and medium-high-tech industries. Financial performance also improves when a firm decides to form a strategic alliance based on the results of performance feedback. Originality/value - This research extends recent efforts to better understand the effect of performance feedback on firms' performance when they use strategic alliances. These findings suggest that the CEOs and managers of firms should consider the performance feedback perspective when deciding to pursue a strategic alliance to improve performance. In other words, the decision-makers in a firm must analyze and consider various complex variables inside and outside the firm and expand such subjects of examination to more complex and dynamic factors.

  • Recently, foreign utilities emphasize the importance of the value-added services based on Information Technology(IT) as one of the strategic technologies for establishing a new power system in the future digital society. They develop many different types of the value-added services and apply the systems for customer. In domestic case, the data from the Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) System is used only for calculating the tariffs. Data from the AMR system can be strategic assets for utilities to provide the value-added services for customer. Development of the value-added services for utilities and customer needs processing and managing the AMR data. In this paper, the energy consulting service, which is adequate to new power system environment, is suggested for development of the value-added services. The application of the suggested service will bring the effect of reducing the monthly bill for customer. Also the service will give not only the effective demand side management(DSM) and load control, but also reduction of the investment for utilities.

  • Research has shown that alliances with external partners are valuable to foster internal R & D efforts. However, it is not well known how to take advantage of the potential benefits of strategic alliances to create innovative outcomes. This study examines the value of strategic alliances and analyzes the role of human capital in the impact of strategic alliances on innovation performance. This study focuses on whether the absorptive capacity of human capital affects firm innovation through interaction with strategic alliances. In the analysis using 2,205 Korean venture firm data, strategic alliances have a positive effect on innovation performance. However, the moderating role of human capital in the relationship between strategic alliances and innovation performance shows a significant negative impact. This implies that the ability to internalize knowledge and information acquired from external partners into the firm is important. This study provides valuable insights for managers who want to enhance the effectiveness of strategic alliances by considering the interaction of strategic alliances and human capital.

  • CSV(Creating Shared Value) model was proposed by Porter and Kramer (2011) to address relationship between businesses and society. Namely, it means that CSV deals with business value and social problem solving simultaneously. In this paper, the notion of CSV was applied to the food enterprise, and the cases of CSV with farming area were discovered. Especially, this paper proposed the framework for analyzing CSV activity based on the three-level of CSV suggested by Porter and Kramer (2011) and strategic options for vertical coordination proposed by Peterson et al. (2001). As a result of case analysis applying the proposed framework in this study, three types of CSV activity were discovered: Local food type, downstream support type, and joint corporate establish type. Local food type creates CSV based on momentary purchase or specification contract as strategic options for vertical coordination. Downstream support type creates CSV mainly based on relation-based alliance as a strategic option for vertical coordination. Lastly, joint corporate establish type creates CSV based on equity-based alliance as a strategic option for vertical coordination. This paper contributed to the CSV literatures for discovering cases of CSV with farming area and categorizing discovered cases applying proposed framework.

  • The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries prepared the sixth industrialization certification system to increase the added value in the agricultural sector, but it is a bit hard to judge that the system has been in the stage of creating sufficient added value. In particular, because of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, there is a significant change in all industry sectors, including innovation in technology, and the change of perception among the society members is being rapidly changed toward the corporate sector's social role. Thus, we surveyed companies that received the sixth industrialization enterprise certificate to address this phenomenon and find clues on how to be competitive. We selected 800 companies certified by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries as sixth industrialization enterprises as our study samples. Among them, we subjected 275 respondents to a final analysis upon eliminating incomplete responses. The result of the study revealed that entrepreneurship, including autonomy that reflects the characteristics of the certified companies, had a significant positive impact on economic value. Moreover, with the size of the companies certified as the sixth industrialization enterprise and the industry trend toward the innovative Fourth Industrial Revolution considered, the strategic orientation including the customer orientation to intensively focus on customer needs and the technology orientation to accept technology as a competitive sector even in the agricultural industry was found to have a significant positive effect on economic value. Strategic orientation demonstrated a significant positive effect on social value. Entrepreneurship demonstrated a significant positive effect on economic values but did not significantly affect the social value. Lastly, while strategic orientation has demonstrated that no mediation effect resulted due to a high direct effect between entrepreneurship and economic value, a complete mediation effect occurred between entrepreneurship and social value. Based on this study, if the companies that received the sixth industrialization enterprise certificate are equipped with not only entrepreneurship but also strategic orientation for customer-oriented thinking and response to technological changes, they can become an influential element in creating not only economic value but also social value, which is emphasized as an element of sustainability.
