  • Recently, there are much concerns about new and innovative transverse materials which could be used instead of conventional transverse steel in reinforced concrete bridge piers. FRP materials could be substituted for conventional transverse steel because of their sufficient strength, light weight, easy fabrication, and useful applicability to any shapes of pier sections, such as rectangular or circular sections. The objective of this research is to evaluate the seismic performance of reinforced concrete bridge pier specimens with FRP transverse reinforcement by means of the Quasi-Static test. In the first task, test columns were made using FRP rope, but these specimens appeared to fail at low displacement ductility levels due to insufficient confinement of strand extension itself. Therefore, the second task was to evaluate the seismic performance of test specimens transversely confined with FRP band. Although FRP banded specimens showed lower seismic performance than the specimen with spiral reinforcing steel, it satisfied with the response modification factor, 3, required for the single column of Korea bridge roadway design code. It was concluded that FRP band could be efficiently substituted for conventional reinforcing steel.

  • Shear behaviors of eight dapped ends of four full-scale domestic single-tee slabs were evaluated. The dapped ends with 10cm topping concrete were designed based on live load requirements for the domestic parking lot of m 500kgf/㎡ and for the large market of 1,200 kgf/㎡. All specimens were designed by the ACI 318-99 design. The variations of the experiment were the shape of hanger reinforcements as followings: 1) general PCI design method(currently used in domestic), 2) 90 degree bent-up, 3) 60 degree bent-up. All experiments were conducted with 1.2 m shear span. The results obtained in this study were 1) all specimens fully complied with the shear strength requirements as specified by ACI 318-99 except for one strand bond slip specimen, 2)a specimen with the 60 degree bent up hanger reinforcing detail showed the best shear behaviors under full service and ultimate load, and 3)a specimen with the 90 degree bent up hanger reinforcing detail resulted in the worst shear behaviors.

  • A proposal of the basic fbrm on the design of joint parts that can increase the shear strength by the useful joint shapes of each member is intended. The vertical joint parameters are the number of' shear key and a variety of' reinfbrcement details and the horizontal joint paramctcrs arc t,hc number of shear key and the direction of' shear f'orcc. 10 PC panel vortical joint arid 12 PC panel horizontal joint specimens were tested to investigate the effects of these parameters. Test results show that : 1. The ductility of the test specimen that has the horizontal reinforcing steels is larger than that does not have. 2. The maximum resisting force of round bar specimen is similar to that of strand wire specimen under the condition of fixed horizontal displacement.

  • Recently, concrete structures with carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) reinforcements have been commonly used for the bridge and building construction. In this paper, pier caps were strengthened by prestressed near surface mounted CFRP. To verify the effectiveness of the strengthening method, 7 pier cap specimens were fabricated. One specimen was designed for control, two for external prestressing steel strands, two for CFRP plates, and two for CFRP bars. Experimental variables consist of type of reinforcement materials and prestressing levels. The results of laboratory have shown that the ultimate load capacities of prestressed near surface mounted CFRP specimens were about $20{\sim}33%$ greater than that of a control specimen. Also, ultimate load capacities of prestressed near surface mounted CFRP specimens were similar to those of external prestressing specimens with steel strands.

  • Burning rate of a propellent is an essential factor when designing a propulsion system. In order to come up with burning rate, first we need to design and build propellent grain to get neutral pressure curve. Then check the pressure with ground test and calculate the burning rate using burning rate equation. This burning rate is then compared to the burning rate of a propellent which was resulted from making a standardized specimen and combusting it using a strand burner. An accurate burning rate is calculated after comparing those two burning rates. For this study, compact propulsion system was designed, produced, tested and analyzed in order to get burning rates, an essential factor in propulsion system design, in an effective way.

  • In this study, the effect of mechanical and chemical properties of glass fiber reinforced thermoplastic (GFRTPs) according to the number of recycling was confirmed. The composite materials were manufactured through a hot press compression molding process using an E-glass chopped strand mat and a polypropylene film. Four specimens were named according to the number of recycled test repeat: First manufacture, 1st Recycle, 2nd Recycle, and 3rd Recycle. To investigate the mechanical properties of the prepared specimen, tensile test, flexural test, drop-weight impact test, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and field emission electron gun-scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) was performed. As a result, as the number of recycling steps repeat, the degree of crystallization, tensile strength, elastic modulus, and flexural strength were increased, but the impact properties were greatly reduced.

  • Load transfer experiments have been carried out to evaluate the performance of the anchorage and it has been stated that the specimens were manufactured and tested according to ETAG 013. On the other hand, the amount of spiral reinforcement and auxiliary reinforcement exceeded the amount specified in ETAG 013. In this study, the load transfer test method and the criteria specified in ETAG 013 were considered and the PT anchorage system was applied to manufacture specimens with high strength concrete and a high tensile prestressing strand. A load transfer test according to ETAG 013 was performed to evaluate the performance of the circular anchorage. As a result, it was confirmed that ETAG 013 is a very strict specification that does not satisfy the performance of an anchorage unless the specimens of an appropriate size and spiral reinforcement are used. To assess the stability of the specimens, increasing the size of the specimen by 15%, rather than increasing the amount of auxiliary reinforcement, is considered to be the correct method in accordance with ETAG 013.

  • The first occurrence of a giant squid, Architeuthis sp. (one specimen), and the oarfish, Regalecus russellii (two specimens) in the East Sea were reported based on specimens collected in January and February 2010. The giant squid (Architeuthis sp.) stranded at Pohang in Jan. 2010 was female, 175 cm in mantle length (ML), 506 cm in tentacle length (TL), and 33.9% FL/ML, it contained common squid beaks. Both stranded oarfish (Regalecus russellii) at Uljin (Jan. 2010) and Yeongdeok (Feb. 2010) were male, with total weigths (TW) of 18,506 and 21,703 g and total lengths (TL) of 3,850 and 3,670 mm, respectively. The stomach of the first was empty, while that of the second was filled with euphausiids. In the East Sea, giant squid have been stranded 14 times in five areas, while 17 oarfish have been stranded in nine areas. Since 1990, the two species have been found most often at Pohang.

  • The effect of alkaline environmental condition on durability of GFRP composites according to additives has been investigated. Additives used were polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), kaolin and alumina powder. Weight gains increased with immersion time in all GFRP composites at $80^{\circ}C$. But weight gain of specimen added PVA did not differ through the whole immersion time in both tap water and alkaline solution at 20 and $80^{\circ}C$. Tensile strength decreased with immersion time in all environment conditions. Tensile strength of GFRP composites regardless of additives decreased rapidly up to 5 days of immersion and then decreased slowly up to 30 days in alkaline solution environment at $80^{\circ}C$. The weight gains were not much difference in both tap water and alkaline solution at $20^{\circ}C$. But the ones of GFRP composites added PVA was smaller than the composites without additive in all aqueous at $20^{\circ}C$. Test strength of GFRP composites added polyvinyl alcohol has improved through the whole immersion time in both tap water and alkaline solution environment at $20^{\circ}C$.
