A thermal distortion analysis which takes strains directly as boundary conditions removed barrier of analysis time for the evaluation of welding distortion in a large shell structure like ship block. If the FE analysis time is dramatically reduced, the structure modeling time or the input-value calculating time will become a new issue. On the contrary to this, if the calculation time of analysis input-value is dramatically reduced and its results also are more meaningful, a little longer analysis time could be affirmative. In this study, instead of using inherent strain based on elastic analysis, a thermal strain based on elasto-plastic analysis is used as the boundary condition of weldments in order to evaluate the welding distortion. Here, the thermal strain at the weldment was established by using a stress-strain curve established from the test results. It is possible to automatically recognize the modeling induced-stiffness in the shrinkage direction of welded or heated region. The validity of elasto-plastic thermal distortion analysis was verified through the experiment results with various welding sequence.
Up to now, several mathematical theories based on strain energy functions have been developed for rubber materials. These theories, coupled with the finite element method, can be used very effectively by engineers to analyze and design rubber components. However, due to the complexities of the mathematical formulations and the lack of general guidelines available fur the analysis of rubber components, it is a formidable task for an engineer to analyze rubber components. In this paper a method for predicting strain energy functions - Neo-Hookean model and Mooney-Rivlin model - from the hardness using the empirical equation without any experiment is discussed. First based on the elasticity theories of rubber, the relation between stress and strain is defined. Then for the butyl rubbers, the model constants of Neo-Hookean model and Mooney-Rivlin model are calculated from uniaxial tension tests. From the results, the usefulness of the empirical equation to estimate elastic modulus from hardness is confirmed and, fur Mooney-Rivlin model, the predicted and the experimental model constants are compared and discussed.
Creep tests were conducted under a condition of constant stress on two aluminum-based alloys containing particles: Al-5% Mg-0.25% Fe and Al-5% Zn-0.22% Fe. The role of grain boundary sliding was examined in the plane of the surface using a square grid printed on the surface by carbon deposition and perpendicular to the surface using two-beam interferometry. Estimates of the contribution of grain boundary sliding to the total strain, $\varepsilon_{gbs}/\varepsilon_t$ reveal two trends; (i) the sliding contribution is consistently higher in the Al-Mg-Fe alloy, and (ii) the sliding contribution is essentially independent of strain in the Al-Mg-Fe alloy, but it shows a significant decrease with increasing strain in the Al-Zn-Fe alloy. Sliding is inhibited by the presence of particles and its contributions to the total strain are low. This inhibition is attributed to the interaction between the grain boundary dislocations responsible for sliding and particles in the boundaries.
In this study, the tensile properties of mono and hybrid fiber reinforced cement-based composite according to fiber blending ratio under the high strain rate was evaluated. Experimental results, the HSF1.5PVA0.5 shown the highest tensile strength because the PVA fiber suppressed the micro cracks in the matrix around the hooked steel fiber and improved the pull-out resistance of hooked steel fiber. Thus, DIF of strain capacity and fracture toughness of HSF1.5PVA were greatly improved. Also, the fracture toughness was greatly improved because the tensile stress was slowly decreased after the peak stress by improvement of the pull-out resistance of hooked steel fiber at strain rate 101/s.
Monitoring systems currently applied to concrete bridges include strain gauges, inclinometers, accelerometers and displacement transducers. In general, vertical displacements are one of the parameters that more often need to be assessed because their information reflects the overall response of the bridge span. However, the implementation of systems to continuously and directly observe vertical displacements is known to be difficult. On the other hand, strain gauges and inclinometers are easier to install, but their measurements provide no more than indirect information regarding the bridge deflection. In this context, taking advantage of the information collected through strain gauges and inclinometers, and the processing capabilities of current computers, a procedure to evaluate bridge girder deflections based on polynomial functions is presented. The procedure has been implemented in an existing software system - MENSUSMONITOR -, improving the flexibility in the data handling and enabling faster data processing by means of real time visualization capabilities. Benefiting from these features, a comprehensive analysis aiming at assessing the suitability of polynomial functions as an approximate solution for deflection curves, is presented. The effect of boundary conditions and the influence of the order of the polynomial functions on the accuracy of results are discussed. Some recommendations for further instrumentation plans are provided based on the results of the present analysis. This work is supported throughout by monitoring data collected from a laboratory beam model and two full-scale bridges.
Two modulus, strain modulus $(E_v)$ and subgrade reaction modulus $(K_{30})$ are being used as a standard for bearing stiffness in Korea Railroad design. The first is used in Europe and the other is used in Japan. The methodologies to obtain the two modulus are similar in using plate. But testing methods are different in loading to plate. Therefore, according to soil strain range, there should be large gap in not only computations of deformation modulus but also the necessary time to test. At first, this paper focuses on the two kinds of test methods to evaluate bearing stiffness. Secondly, based on elastic theory, the theory to obtain the two coefficients are studied thoroughly. Finally, the correlations between the two coefficients were analyzed and evaluated based on the field test results more than 38 places. The matching values for subgrade and ground between $K_{30}$ and $E_{v2}$ are proposed with the consideration of the proposed strain reduction factor (1.5 for subgrade and 3 for ground) and safety factor, respectively.
We in this paper study nonlinear bending of a functionally graded porous nanobeam subjected to multiple physical load based on the nonlocal strain gradient theory. For more reasonable analysis of nanobeams made of porous functionally graded magneto-thermo-electro-elastic materials (PFGMTEEMs), both constituent materials and the porosity appear gradient distribution in the present expression of effective material properties, which is much more suitable to the actual compared with the conventional expression of effective material properties. Besides the displacement function regarding physical neutral surface is introduced to analyze mechanical behaviors of beams made of FGMs. Then we derive nonlinear governing equations of PFGMTEEMs beams using the principle of Hamilton. To obtain analytical solutions, a two-step perturbation method is developed in nonuniform electric field and magnetic field, and then we use it to solve nonlinear equations. Finally, the analytical solutions are utilized to perform a parametric analysis, where the effect of various physical parameters on static bending deformation of nanobeams are studied in detail, such as the nonlocal parameter, strain gradient parameter, the ratio of nonlocal parameter to strain gradient parameter, porosity volume fraction, material volume fraction index, temperature, initial magnetic potentials and external electric potentials.

In this paper, dynamic stress, strain and deflection analysis of concrete pipes conveying nanoparticles-water under the seismic load are studied. The pipe is buried in the soil which is modeled by spring and damper elements. The Navier-Stokes equation is used for obtaining the force induced by the fluid and the mixture rule is utilized for considering the effect of nanoparticles. Based on refined two variables shear deformation theory of shells, the pipe is simulated and the equations of motion are derived based on energy method. The Galerkin and Newmark methods are utilized for calculating the dynamic stress, strain and deflection of the concrete pipe. The influences of internal fluid, nanoparticles volume percent, soil medium and damping of it as well as length to diameter ratio of the pipe are shown on the dynamic stress, strain and displacement of the pipe. The results show that with enhancing the nanoparticles volume percent, the dynamic stress, strain and deflection decrease.
As the number of aging bridges increases, more studies are being conducted on developing effective and reliable methods for the assessment and maintenance of bridges. With the advancement in new sensing systems and data learning techniques through AI technology, there is growing interests in how to evaluate bridges using these advanced techniques. This paper presents a CNN(Convolution Neural Network) deep learning based technique for evaluating the damage existence and for estimating the damage location in PSC bridges using static strain data. Simulation studies were conducted to investigate the proposed method with error analysis. Damage was simulated as the reduction in the stiffness of a finite element. A data learning model was constructed by applying the CNN technique as a type of deep learning. The damage status and its location were estimated using data set built through simulation. It was assumed that the strain gauges were installed in a regular interval under the PSC bridge girders. In order to increase the accuracy in evaluating damage, the squared error between the intact and measured strains are computed and applied for training the data model. Considering the damage occurring near the supports, the results of error analysis were compared according to whether strain data near the supports were included.
This article focuses on the study of the buckling behavior of two-dimensional functionally graded (2D-FG) nanosize tubes, including porosity, based on the first shear deformation and higher-order theory of the tube. The nano-scale tube is simulated using the nonlocal gradient strain theory, and the general equations and boundary conditions are derived using Hamilton's principle for the Zhang-Fu's tube model (as a higher-order theory) and Timoshenko beam theory. Finally, the derived equations are solved using a numerical method for both simply-supported and clamped boundary conditions. A parametric study is performed to investigate the effects of different parameters, such as axial and radial FG power indices, porosity parameter, and nonlocal gradient strain parameters, on the buckling behavior of the bi-dimensional functionally graded porous tube. Keywords: Nonlocal strain gradient theory; buckling; Zhang-Fu's tube model; Timoshenko theory; Two-dimensional functionally graded materials; Nanotubes; Higher-order theory.
