The alignment of propulsion shaft systems by the fair curve method has been developed over the past twenty years and in recent years its basic problems have been almost solved. At the present time, studies on introducing actual conditions are being undertaken. In a fair curve alignment, its aim is to achieve a stable shaft system which will be relatively insensitive to misalignment or the influence of external factors such as thermal variations due to the sunshine, speed change, etc. The key point of fair curve alignment is the calculations of reactions in the straight support and reaction influence numbers. The present authors have developed those calculating method by the matrix method of the three-moment theorem. The fair curve alignment is based on the analysis of propulsion shaft system which is assumed as a continous beam on multiple support points. The propeller shaft is divided into several elements. For each element, the nodal point equation is derived by the three-moment theorem. Reaction of supporting points of straight shaft and reaction influence numbers are calculated by the matrix calculation of each nodal point equation. It has been found that results of calculation for the model shaft agree well with those of experiment which had been measured by the strain gauge method. Results of calculation for the actual propulsion shafting of the steam turbine had been compared also with those of Det norske Vertas.
This paper is about proposal of a calculation method and development of an analytical program for predicting crack width and deflection in structural concrete members. The proposed method numerically calculate stresses in steel rebar using a parabola-rectangle stress-strain curve and a modified tension stiffening factor considering the effect of the cover thickness. Based on the study results, a calculation method to predict crack width and deflection in reinforced concrete flexural members is proposed utilizing effective tension area and idealized tension chord as well as effective moment-curvature relationship considering tension stiffening effect. The calculation method was applied to the test specimens available in literatures. The study results showed that the crack width and deflections predicted by the proposed method were closed to the experimentally measured data compared the current design code provisions.

This study focuses on the design of the tapered joints of a wind power turbine. The main variables of the tapered joint are the transmitted torque, shaft diameter, contact area of the tapered ring, and tightening torque of the bolts, which applies a compressive pressure from the hub to the shaft. The stress distribution of the taper fit was calculated under axisymmetric plane strain conditions because of the small taper angle. The axial displacement of the clamp can be calculated from the radial elastic deformation and the taper angle. The stress field of each ring is obtained from the cylinder stress equation. To verify the accuracy of the calculation, finite element (FE) analysis was performed, and the results of the calculation and FE analysis were compared. The hoop stress of the tapered surface showed a discrepancy of approximately 10, but the trends of the stress distributions of each component and the relative movement obtained by FE analysis were in good agreement with the analytical calculation results.

Bearing damages by shaft misalignment have frequently been happened in marine ships. Specially. after stern tube bearing damage and failure for large crude oil carriers have been reported several times. However. the bearing reaction of the after stern tube bearing cannot be measured by jack-up test due to the hull structure condition. Therefore, when the jack-up test is used for the bearing reaction measurements, the bearing reaction for the after stern tube bearing obtained from the theoretical calculation method have to be used. In this paper, the shaft alignment on the large oil crude carrier is theoretically calculated and the differences between the calculated and actual installed bearing reaction values are compared. The bearing reactions for forward stern tube bearing and intermediate bearing are calculated by the simple formula using the strain gauge bending moments obtained from the measurements. Their reliability is confirmed by comparing the bearing reactions from jack-up test and the bearing reaction for after stern tube bearing is calculated by the same test. Also, the bearing reactions on the after stern tube bearing, forward stern tube bearing and intermediate shaft bearing under all operating conditions are calculated by using the bending moments obtained from the measurements and it is confirmed that the differences of the bearing reaction for all operating conditions are caused from hull deflection. The results of this study should prove useful for the future projects of the alignment calculation including the hull deflection effectiveness.

Estimation of correct ice load under various operating conditions is important during the design and the operation stages of an icebreaker. Normal operating conditions are expected from the official field ice trials and also from general ice transit action. In this paper ice load for the Korean icebreaking research vessel, ARAON, under normal operating condition, is discussed. Published ice load data from full-scale sea trials of six icebreakers were analysed to derive an empirical ice load prediction formula. The IBRV ARAON had sea ice trials during 2010 and 2012 summer season. Strain gauge signal were recorded during her icebreaking voyage and the measured strain data were converted to the equivalent hull stress values. The effect of ARAON's speed in ice and the hull stresses are investigated. By comparing the empirical formula and ice load calculation based von measured data, it is recommended to use the empirical ice load estimation formula for the initial design stage.

The rolling force and roll deformation behavior in the twin roll type strip continuous casting process has been computed to estimate the thermal charcteristics of a caster roll. To calculation of rolling force, the relationship between flow stress and strain for a roll material and casting alloy are assumed as a function of strain-rate and temperature because mechanical properties of a casting materials depends on tempera- ture. The three dimensional thermal dlastic-plastic analysis of a cooling roll has also been carried out to obtain a roll stress and plastic strain distributions with the commercial finite element analysis package of ANSYS. Temperature fields data of caster roll which are provided by authors were used to estimated of roll deformation. Roll life considering thermal cycle is calculated by using thermal elastic-plastic analysis results. Roll life is proposed as a terms of a roll revolution in the caster roll with and without fine failure model on the roll surface. To obtain of plastic strain distributions of caster roll, thermomechan- ical properties of roll sleeve with a copper alloy is obtained by uniaxial tensile test for variation of temperature.

The Strain Wedge Model is useful method for horizontal bearing capacity calculation considering interaction of pile and ground deformation. However, application case of the Strain Wedge Model is rare and the strain wedge model of plenty of verification is needed on multi layered ground in Korea. In this present study, to conduct laboratory model test and numerical analysis for verification of Strain Wedge Model, adapt model that could describe the interaction of pile and ground deformation on multi layered ground. In model test, it was performed to estimate the behavior characteristics on pile under lateral load and to analyze the relationship between load and deformation. In addition, it was fulfilled to measure the skin friction on pile using strain gauge and to decide the ground passive resistance wedge using skin friction. Numerical analysis was performed to verify laboratory model test results.

This paper describes the specifications on balanced steel ratio and maximum reinforcement for the design of RC flexural members by the Korean Highway Bridge Design Code based on limit states design. The Korean Highway Bridge Design Code (Limit States Design) is not provide for the balanced steel ratio specification for the calculation of required steel area of RC flexural members design. The maximum steel area limited the depth of the neutral axis at the ultimate limit states after redistribution of the moment, and also recommended the maximum steel area should not exceed 4 percent of the cross sectional area. However, from the maximum neutral axis depth provisions should increase the cross section is calculated to be less the maximum reinforcement area, and according to the 4% of the cross sectional area of the concrete, the tensile strain of the reinforcement is calculated to be greater than double the yielding strain, so can not guarantee a ductile behavior. This study developed a balanced reinforcement ratio that is basis for the required reinforcement calculation for tension-controlled RC flexural members design in the ultimate limit states verification provisons and material properties and applied the ultimate strain of the concrete compressive strength with a simple formular to be applied to design practice induced. And assumed the minimum allowable tensile strain of reinforcement double the yielding strain, and applying correction coefficient up to the ratio of maximum neutral axis depth, proposed maximum steel ratio that can be applied irrespective of the reinforcement yield strength and concrete compressive strength.
Low-cycle environmental fatigue tests of cast austenitic stainless steel CF8M at the condition of fatigue strain rate 0.04%/sec were conducted at the pressure and temperature, 15MPa, $315^{\circ}C$ of a operating pressurized water reactor. The used test rig was limited to install an extensometer at the gauge length of the cylindrical fatigue specimen inside the small autoclave. So the magnet type LVDT's were used to measure the fatigue displacement at the specimen shoulders inside the high temperature and high pressure water autoclave. However, the displacement and strain measured at the specimen shoulders is different from the one at the gauge length for the geometry and the cyclic strain hardening effect. FEM calculated the displacement and the strain of the gauge length from the data measured at the shoulders. Tensile test properties in elastic and plastic behavior of CF8M material were used in the FEM analysis. A series of low cycle fatigue tests simulating the cyclic strain hardening effect verified that the FEM calculation was well agreed with the simulated tests. The process and method developed in this study would be so useful to produce reliable environmental fatigue curves of CF8M stainless steel in pressurized water reactors.
Purpose. The aim of the study was to compare the lingualized implant placement creating a buccal cantilever with prosthetic-driven implant placement exhibiting excessive crown-to-implant ratio. Materials and Methods. Based on patient's CT scan data, two finite element models were created. Both models were composed of the severely resorbed posterior mandible with first premolar and second molar and missing second premolar and first molar, a two-unit prosthesis supported by two implants. The differences were in implants position and crown-to-implant ratio; lingualized implants creating lingually overcontoured prosthesis (Model CP2) and prosthetic-driven implants creating an excessive crown-to-implant ratio (Model PD2). A screw preload of 466.4 N and a buccal occlusal load of 262 N were applied. The contacts between the implant components were set to a frictional contact with a friction coefficient of 0.3. The maximum von Mises stress and strain and maximum equivalent plastic strain were analyzed and compared, as well as volumes of the materials under specified stress and strain ranges. Results. The results revealed that the highest maximum von Mises stress in each model was 1091 MPa for CP2 and 1085 MPa for PD2. In the cortical bone, CP2 showed a lower peak stress and a similar peak strain. Besides, volume calculation confirmed that CP2 presented lower volumes undergoing stress and strain. The stresses in implant components were slightly lower in value in PD2. However, CP2 exhibited a noticeably higher plastic strain. CONCLUSION. Prosthetic-driven implant placement might biomechanically be more advantageous than bone quantity-based implant placement that creates a buccal cantilever.
