  • This paper presents a study on the linear compensation of nonlinear hysteric actuators using the highly magnetostrictive film pattern as a strain sensor. Elements had a hybrid structure, in which thin soft glass substrate with the highly magnetostrictive amorphous FeCoSiB film was bonded on the PZT piezoelectric substrate. The magnetostrictive film as a strain sensor detects the deflection of an actuator, and a voltage signal from the strain sensor related to the deflection of an actuator is used for the linear control of an actuator.

  • For developing fatigue design curve of cast stainless steels that would be used in piping material of domestic nuclear power plants, a low-cycle fatigue test rig was built. It is capable of performing tests in pressurized high temperature water environment of PWR. Cylindrical specimens of CF8M were used for the strain-controlled environmental fatigue tests. Fatigue life was measured in terms of the number of cycles with the variation of strain amplitude at 0.04%/s strain rates. The disparity between target length and measured length of specimens was corrected by using finite element method. The corrected test results showed similar fatigue life trend with another previous results.

  • Induction heating process is one of the most efficient heating process in terms of temperature control accuracy and heating time saving. In the past study, fabrication process of cellular 6061 alloys by powder metallurgical route and induction heating process was studied. To supplement the framing conditions that studied in past study, effect of induction heating capacity and holding time at foaming temperature were investigated. Under the achieved framing conditions, teamed 6061 alloys were fabricated for variation of foaming temperature, and porosities(%)-foaming temperature curves were obtained by try-error experimental method. Uniaxial compression tests were performed to investigate the relationship between porosities(%) and stress-strain curves of framed 6061 alloy. Also, energy absorption capacity and efficiency were calculated from stress-strain curves to investigated. Moreover, dependence of plateau stress on strain rate was investigated in case of cellular 6061 alloy with low porosities(%)

  • Among the root colonizing and plant growth promoting bacteria isolated from the bacterial wilt suppressive soil, five strains were detected to produce siderophores by CAS agar assay. The most effective isolate, TS3-7 strain induced significant suppression of bacterial wilt disease in tomato and pepper plants. Seed treatment followed by soil drench application with this strain resulted in over 80% reduction of bacterial wilt disease compared with the control. Significant disease suppression by TS3-7 strain was related to the production of siderophore. Besides iron competition, induction of resistance of the host plant with siderophore was suggested to be another mode of action that suppress bacterial wilt, based on the lack of direct antibiosis against pathogen in vitro. According to Bergey's Manual of Systemic Bacteriology and 16S rDNA sequence data, TS3-7 stain was identified as Pseudomonas sp. TS3-7.

  • In this study we have the properties of drying shrinkage crack of hardened cement mortar using admixtures. The drying shrinkage cracking test process has been examined by the restrained drying shrinkage strain by restraining rate measuring properties of strain-with- restraint by JIS original proposal and keeps a flow value of mortar about 100$\pm$5%. The results show that the usage of shrinkage reducing agent 1.5% was effective on the control of drying shrinkage in OPC and CP by restraining rate 20% and strain-with-restraing 20~30 $\mu$, the usage of expansion agent 0.45% was effective by restraining rate 50~60% and strain-with-restraint 40~80$\mu$, and the effectiveness was increased with shrinkage reducing agent. Also. admixtures such as Flyash, CP and NC reduced restrained shrinkage and drying shrinkage cracking and more with shrinkage reducing agent

  • Natural frequencies and mode shapes are two important modal data which specify the system. If the real system and FE model don't have the same local physical parameters, there will be a difference between modal data from real system and FE model. Because there is little difference in displacement mode shapes measured by an accelerometer, displacement modal update based on mode shapes including measurement errors may not be successful.   • This paper presents a new uniaxial material model for rate-sensitive analysis addressing both the transient and steady-state responses. The new model adopts visco-plastic theory for the rate-sensitive response, and employs a three-parameter representation of the overstress as a function of the strain-rate. The third parameter is introduced in the new model to control its transient response characteristics, and to provide flexibility in fitting test data on the variation of overstress with strain-rate. Since the governing visco-plastic differential equation cannot be integrated analytically due to its inherent nonlinearity, a new single-step numerical integration procedure is proposed, which leads to high levels of accuracy almost independent of the size of the integration time-step. The new model is implemented within the nonlinear analysis program ADAPTIC, which is used to provide several verification examples and comparison with other experimental and numerical results. The companion paper extends the three-parameter model to trilinear static stress-strain relationships for steel and concrete, and presents application examples of the proposed models.

  • In order to microbially control root-knot nematode(Meloidogyne incognita) in tomato, a strain BtTH109 of Bacillus thuringiensis producing root-knot nematocidal toxin was isolated. The strain BtTH109 was identified B. thuringiensis subsp. indiana(serotype 16) based on flagella antigenicity, biochemical properties, and morphological charcateristics. The strain BtTH109 have extracellularly produced a root-knot nematocidal toxin, which was very toxic against not only egghatch but also the 2nd-nematode larva of root-knot nematode in vitro.

  • The toxic effects of four pesticides on the entomopathogenic nematodes. Heterorhabditis bacteriophora NC strain, Steinernema glaseri NC and Dongrae strain were tested by checking the mortality of infective juveniles(Ijs) in aqueous solution of pesticide. Mortality of Ijs was influenced by pesticide and concentration and soaking time. The herbicide alachlor and insecticide fenitrothion were toxic to Ijc of three entomopathogenic nematodes. But, the fungicides mepronil and tolclofos-methyl were nontoxic to Ijs. Tolclofos-methyl showed significantly very week toxicity at 28 days after soaking for S. glaseri NC strain. H. bacteriophora NC strain was more highly sensitive to high temperature condition then were the other nematodes.

Multiple cracking analysis of HTPP-ECC by digital image correlation method

  • This study aims to characterize the multiple cracking behavior of HTPP-ECC (High tenacity polypropylene fiber reinforced engineered cementitious composites) by Digital Image Correlation (DIC) Method. Digital images have been captured from a dogbone shaped HTPP-ECC specimen exhibiting 3.1% tensile ductility under loading. Images analyzed by VIC-2D software and ${\varepsilon}_{xx}$ strain maps have been obtained. Crack widths were computed from the ${\varepsilon}_{xx}$ strain maps and crack width distributions were determined throughout the specimen. The strain values from real LVDTs were also compared with virtual LVDTs digitally attached on digital images. Results confirmed that it is possible to accurately monitor the initiation and propagation of any single crack or multiple cracks by DIC at the whole interval of testing. Although the analysis require some post-processing operations, DIC based crack analysis methodology can be used as a promising and versatile tool for quality control of HTPP-ECC and other strain hardening composites.
