  • This paper presents an method, called the phantom-node method, for representing discontinuities in shell structures. By decomposing an element completely cut by a crack into two overlapped elements special treatment of the MITC3 shell element to overcome "locking phenomenon" is straightforward. Two numerical examples are provided.

  • This paper examines the long-run social welfare maximization problems facing public utilities, which includes consideration of the cost of capital or other fixed costs of production, from which it derives optimal investment decisions in a reliability differentiated pricing based market. Reliability differentiated pricing policies lead to straightforward mathematical results on optimal investment decisions in generation and transmission expansion planning. This paper presents the mathematical conditions for optimal investment decisions.

  • With the rapid development of bioorganic chemistry recently, a field of artificial enzymes has a great concern from the industrial point of view. A number of possibilities now exist ofr the construction of artificial enzymes. They must posses two structural entities, a substrate-binding site and a catalytically effective site. It has been found that producing the facility for substrate binding is relatively straightforward but catalytic sites are somewhat more difficult. Therefore, synthetic catalysts do not yet match all the properties of an enzyme, however, the design of catalysts has lead to very powerful effects. This article reviews the existing literature on the modeling of artificial enzymes using cyclodextrin, modified cyclodextrin and crown compounds.

  • Current code procedures for stress and stability analysis of new and existing concrete-gravity dams are primarily based on conventional methods of analysis. Such methods can be applied in a straightforward manner but there has been evidence that they may be inaccurate or, possibly, not conservative. This paper presents finite element modeling and analysis procedures and makes recommendations for local failure criteria at the dam-rock interface aimed at predicting more accurately the behavior of dams under hydraulic and anchoring loads.

  • Using the well-known Fokker-Planck method, this paper presents a standard way to find the joint-characteristic function for the first- and second-order polarization-mode-dispersion vectors originally derived by Foschini and Shepp. Compared with the Foschini and Shepp's approach, the Fokker-Planck approach gives a more accurate and straightforward way to find the joint-characteristic function.

  • Carbocyclic nucleosides are unique class in which a methylene group replaces the oxygen in the furan, which result in metabolic stability to endogenous phosphorylase. The biologically active natural carbocyclic nucleosides such as aristeromycin and neplanocin were found to possess interesting biological properties including antiviral and antitumor activity. • Polymer-bonded magnetostrictive composites have some distinct advantages over conventional type materials in being cost effective and suitable for high frequency applications due to high electrical resistivity. Composites of rare earth based alloys were reported to show good magnetostrictive characteristics both in static and dynamic conditions [1]. It was originally thought that the application of the polymer-bonding technique to transition metal alloys is straightforward. (omitted)

  • The reduction of cave survey data is an essentially straightforward but repetitive mathematical task which can be carried out to advantage using virtually any type of computer from a programmable calculator upwards. The obvious benefits are speed and accuracy in reducing and adjusting the raw data to obtain the x,y,z coordinates (eastings, northings and elevations) of the surveyed points. Additionally, depending on the functionality of the software (program) and power of the hardware (computer), the user may be able to build up a data base of surveys, plot out on paper scaled plans and elecations of the cave and possibly even see a three-dimensional model of the cave, in perspective or some other projection, as an aid to understanding the spatial relationships of cave passages.(omitted)

  • Knowledge Based Authentication is the most well-known technique for user authentication in a computer security framework. Most frameworks utilize a straightforward PIN (Personal Identification Number) or psssword as an data authenticator. Since password based authenticators typically will be software based, they are inclined to different attacks and weaknesses, from both human and software. Some of the attacks are talked about in this paper.

  • Three dimensional thermal cycle analysis of the plunger is carried out in repeated forming process of the TV glass, which is continued work of two dimensional analysis where an efficient method has been proposed. The plunger undergoes temperature fluctuation during a cycle due to the repeated contact and separation from the glass, which attains a cyclic steady state having same temperature history at every cycle. Straightforward analysis of this problem brings about more than 90 cycles to get reasonable solution. An exponential function fitting method is proposed, which finds exponential function to best approximate temperature values of 3 consecutive cycles, and new cycle is restarted with the fitted value at infinite time. Number of cases are analyzed using the proposed method and compared to the result of straightforward repetition, from which one finds that the method always reaches nearly convergent solution within $9{\sim}12$ cycles, but turns around afterwards without further convergence. Two step use is found most efficient, in which the exponential fitting is carried out fer the first 12 cycles, followed by simple repetition, which shows fast convergence expending only 6 additional cycles to get the accuracy within 2 error. This reduces the computation cycle remarkably from 90 to 18, which is 80% reduction. From the parametric studies, one reveals that the overall thermal behavior of the plunger in terms of cooling parameters and time is similar to that of 2 dimensional analysis.
