Recently, there has been an increasing demand for computer-vision based inspection and/or measurement system as a part of factory automation equipment. Existing manual inspection method can inspect only specific samples and has low measuring accuracy as well as it increases working time. Thus, in order to improve the objectivity and reproducibility, computer-aided analysis method is needed. In this paper, front and side profile inspection and/or data transfer system are developed using computer-vision during the inspection process on three kinds of pipes coming from a forming line. Straight line and circle are extracted from profiles obtained from vision using Laplace operator. To reduce inspection time, Hough Transform is used with clustering method for straight line detection and the center points and diameters of inner and outer circle are found to determine eccentricity and whether good or bad. Also, an inspection system has been built that each pipe's data and images of good/bad test are stored as files and transferred to the server so that the center can manage them.
With improvement in innovative manufacturing technologies, it became possible to fabricate any complex shaped structural design for practical applications. This allows for the fabrication of curvilinearly stiffened pressure vessels and pipes. Compared to straight stiffeners, curvilinear stiffeners have shown to have better structural performance and weight savings under certain loading conditions. In this paper, an optimization framework for designing curvilinearly stiffened composite pressure vessels and pipes is presented. NURBS are utilized to define curvilinear stiffeners over the surface of the pipe. An integrated tool using Python, Rhinoceros 3D, MSC.PATRAN and MSC.NASTRAN is implemented for performing the optimization. Rhinoceros 3D is used for creating the geometry, which later is exported to MSC.PATRAN for finite element model generation. Finally, MSC.NASTRAN is used for structural analysis. A Bi-Level Programming (BLP) optimization technique, consisting of Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Gradient-Based Optimization (GBO), is used to find optimal locations of stiffeners, geometric dimensions for stiffener cross-sections and layer thickness for the composite skin. A cylindrical pipe stiffened by orthogonal and curvilinear stiffeners under torsional and bending load cases is studied. It is seen that curvilinear stiffeners can lead to a potential 10.8% weight saving in the structure as compared to the case of using straight stiffeners.

In this study, vibrational behavior of uniform pipe carrying a moving medium is studied by using a transfer matrix and the displacement function derived from the conventional beam theory. In various boundary conditions, flow velocity and mechanical property change of the variation of natural frequency are investigated. The Coriolis term in the original differential equation of motion has been ignored in the investigation. This method is used to study the variation of natural frequency with flow velocity for clamped-clamped, cantilevered, clamped-pinned, pinned-pinned, free-free straight pipe element. It is shown that clamped-clamped, free-free pipe have the highest natural frequency and critical velocity values while cantilevered pipe have the smallest natural frequency for the same mechanical properties. From the vibration effects of mechanical property variation, it is shown that bending stiffness and pipe length variation has large influence on natural frequency and critical velocity. Since the order of transfer matrix is not changed with boundary conditions of pipe element, this method proposed can be easily applied to personal-computer for vibration analysis of pipe element. Furthermore, this method can be extended to three-dimensional system by using a coordinate transformation for the analysis of piping systems.

This paper covers finite element simulations to evaluate the bending limit of double pipe for tube-hydroforming. The tube-hydroforming process starts with a straight precut tube. The tube is often prebent in a rotary draw bending machine to fit the hydroforming tool. During the bending the tube undergoes significant deformation. So forming defects such as wrinkling, thinning and flattening are generated in the tube. Consequently we analyzed the effect of process parameters in rotary draw bending process and searched the optimized combination of process parameters to minimize the forming defects using orthogonal arrays. The characteristic to evaluate the effects of the process parameters is the bending angle which wrinkling is generated, we define the bending angle at that time as bending limit. Of many process parameters, the process parameters of the bending process such as gab between inner and outer tube, boosting force, dimensions of mandrel were analyzed. And we observed the deformation modes of bent double pipe at specific bending angle in each parameter combination.

Structural pipe frames are usually manufactured by complex processes, in which a straight pipe with an arbitrary cross-section is prepared via a roll-forming process and then fabricated into three-dimensional shapes by a secondary process. These conventional processes have low productivity. Recently, the inefficiency of the conventional processes has created the need to develop new forming technologies. In this study, a new incremental roll-forming process is proposed. The study is aimed at verifying the feasibility of the proposed process and investigating the fundamental process parameters using finite-element simulations. The result of the simulation demonstrates that the proposed process can be used effectively for cold fabrication of various shapes of structural pipes. In addition, the result of the investigation of parameters shows that the forming amount, number of roll sets, and distance between roll sets are significant factors to be considered in resolving dimensional errors of the product and improving its quality.

This study was to investigate characteristics for the pressure wave propagation and the maximum pressure near a rapid closure valve which was installed the end of multi piping network. The multi piping network consists of one inlet and three outlet with straight pipes. The diameter of the pipes including the valve was 100 mm, 80 mm, 80 mm respectively. The valve was rapidly closed with the instantaneous time which was 0.023s in the level for the water hammer. For the simulation, the influence of the pipe thickness and deformation due to pressure-wave-propagation was not considered. CFD was conducted under the following condition : the initial pressure was 1bar in the inlet and the mass flow rate was 7.83 kg/s in the outlet(the velocity in the pipe with 100 mm diameter was 1 m/s). As the valve have conditions that were status with and without fluid flow in the pipe after valve closing, the maximum pressure change and the frequency analysis were examined. As the results, the case that was status with fluid flow appeared the higher maximum pressure than another's, the maximum frequency band was about 10 ~ 11 Hz.
Flow fields inside feeder pipes have been simulated numerically using a CFD (computational fluid dynamics) code to calculate the shear stress distribution, which is the most important factor in predicting the local regions of feeder pipes highly susceptible to FAC (flow-accelerated corrosion)-induced wall thinning. The CFD approach, with schemes used in this study, to simulate the flow situations inside the CANDU feeder pipes has been verified as it showed a good agreement between the investigation results for the failed feedwater pipe at Surry unit 2 plant in the U.S. and the CFD calculation. Sensitivity studies of the three geometrical parameters, such as angle of the first and second bends, length of the first span between the grayloc hub and the first bend, and length of the second span between the first and the second bends have been performed. CFD analysis reveals that the local regions of feeder pipes of Wolsung unit 1 in Korea, on which wall thickness measurements have been performed so far, are not coincident with the worst regions predicted by the present CFD analysis located in the connection region of straight and bend pipe near the inlet part of the bend intrados. Finally, based on the results of the present CFD analysis, a guide to the selection of the weakest local positions where the measurement of wall thickness should be performed with higher priority has been provided.
In this research, the surface roughness affecting the pressure drop in a pipe used as the steam generator of a PWR was studied. Based on the CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) technique using a commercial code named ANSYS-FLUENT, a straight pipe was modeled to obtain the Darcy frictional coefficient, changed with a range of various surface roughness ratios as well as Reynolds numbers. The result is validated by the comparison with a Moody chart to set the appropriate size of grids at the wall for the correct consideration of surface roughness. The pressure drop in a full-scale U-shaped pipe is measured with the same code, correlated with the surface roughness ratio. In the next stage, we studied a reduced scale model of a U-shaped heat pipe with experiment and analysis of the investigation into fluid-structure interaction (FSI). The material of the pipe was cut from the real heat pipe of a material named Inconel 690 alloy, now used in steam generators. The accelerations at the fixed stations on the outer surface of the pipe model are measured in the series of time history, and Fourier transformed to the frequency domain. The natural frequency of three leading modes were traced from the FFT data, and compared with the result of a numerical analysis for unsteady, incompressible flow. The corresponding mode shapes and maximum displacement are obtained numerically from the FSI simulation with the coupling of the commercial codes, ANSYS-FLUENT and TRANSIENT_STRUCTURAL. The primary frequencies for the model system consist of three parts: structural vibration, BPF(blade pass frequency) of pump, and fluid-structure interaction.

A method for the vibration analysis of curved beam conveying fluid with uniform velocity was presented. The dynamics of curved beam is based on the inextensible theory. Both in-plane motion and out-of-plane motion of curved beam were discussed. The finite element method was formulated to solve the governing equations. The natural frequencies calculated by the presented method were compared with those by analytical solution, straight beam theories and Nastran. As the velocity of fluid becomes larger, the results by straight beam model became different from those by curved beam model. And it was shown that the curved beam element should be used to predict the critical velocity of fluid exactly. The influence of fluid velocity on the frequency response function was also discussed.
This paper presents plastic limit loads and approximate J-integral estimates for circumferential part-through surface crack at the interface between elbows and pipes. Based on finite element limit analyses using elastic-perfectly plastic materials, plastic limit moments under in-plane bending are obtained and it is found that they are similar those for circumferential part-through surface cracks in the center of elbow. Based on present FE results, closed-form limit load solutions are proposed. Welds are not explicitly considered and all materials are assumed to be homogeneous. And the method to estimate the elastic-plastic J-integral for circumferential part-through surface cracks at the interface between elbows and straight pipes is proposed based on the reference stress approach, which was compared with corresponding solutions for straight pipes.
