  • Estimation of runoff peak is needed to assess water availability, in order to support the multifaceted water uses and functions, hence to underscore the modalities for efficient water utilization. The magnitude of storm rainfall acts as a primary input for basin level runoff computation. The rainfall-runoff linkage plays a pivotal role in water resource system management and feasibility level planning for resource distribution. Considering this importance, a case study has been carried out in the Hancheon basin of Jeju Island where distinctive hydrological characteristics are investigated for continuous storm rainfall and high permeable geological features. The study aims to estimate unit hydrograph parameters, peak runoff and peak time of storm rainfalls based on Clark unit hydrograph method. For analyzing observed runoff, five storm rainfall events were selected randomly from recent years' rainfall and HEC-hydrologic modeling system (HMS) model was used for rainfall-runoff data processing. The simulation results showed that the peak runoff varies from 164 to 548 m3/sec and peak time (onset) varies from 8 to 27 hours. A comprehensive relationship between Clark unit hydrograph parameters (time of concentration and storage coefficient) has also been derived in this study. The optimized values of the two parameters were verified by the analysis of variance (ANOVA) and runoff comparison performance were analyzed by root mean square error (RMSE) and Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) estimation. After statistical analysis of the Clark parameters significance level was found in 5% and runoff performances were found as 3.97 RMSE and 0.99 NSE, respectively. The calibration and validation results indicated strong coherence of unit hydrograph model responses to the actual situation of historical storm runoff events.

  • The grid-based KIneMatic wave STOrm Runoff Model(Kim, 1998; Kim, et al., 1998) which predicts temporal variation and spatial distribution of overland flow, subsurface flow and stream flow was evaluated at two watersheds. This model adopts the single overland flowpath algorithm and simulates surface and/or subsurface water depth at each cell by using water balance of hydrologic components. The model programmed by C-language uses ASCII-formatted map data supported by the irregular gridded map of the GRASS(Geographic Resources Analysis Support System) GIS and generates the spatial distribution maps of discharge, flow depth and soil moisture of the watershed.

  • The design storm is a crucial element in urban drainage design and hydrological modeling. The total rainfall depth of a design storm is usually estimated by hydrological frequency analysis using historic rainfall records. The different geostatistical approaches (ordinary kriging, universal kriging) have been used as estimators and their results are compared and discussed. Variogram parameters, the sill, nugget effect and influence range, are analysis. Kriging method was applied for developing contour maps of design storm depths In bocheong stream basin. Effect to utilize weather radar data and grid-based basin model on the spatial variation characteristics of storm requires further study.

  • The study is conducted to evaluate loading of organic matter as seasonal changes during non-storm period into Lake Paldang which is used to a major drinking water source. Samples were taken in Lake Paldang intake during non-storm period and were analyzed loading of organic matter. From the results of the survey, improving of the water quality showed remarkable tendency depending on the changing periods from summer to fall and from fall to winter. Dilution effect from the increase of base run-off caused by the concentrated rainfall in rainy season, the characteristics of Korea's climate seems to have to be the reason. On the other hand, deteriorating of the water quality showed tendency depending on the changing periods from winter to spring and from spring to summer. Increase of Cyanobacteria etc. is explained by seasonal effects which are a small amount of the rainfall in winter and spring and gradational increase of water temperature.

  • This study was focused on analyse Nonpoint source characteristics from Flat slope field and Steep slope field. We performed Storm-water monitering for obtain flow data and concentration data. Totally, eleven times Event was occurred. We calculated EMC(Event Mean Concentration) and Pollutants Loads using data we obtained. As a result, steep slope field has more discharge than flat field. SS value, one of the water quality contents, has largest variation and T-N has least variation. There is runoff differences even though events has same rainfall. We assume that not only amount of Rainfall, but also Rainfall Duration Times, Intensity, Number of Previous Non-precipitation days can affect to Run-off.

  • Because of the rapid progress of urbanization in recent decades, the proportion of impervious areas in cities has increased. As a result, hydrological properties of urban streams have changed and non-point pollution sources have increased, that have had considerable influence on human life and ecosystems. To manage these situations, application of non-point pollution reduction facilities and LID facilities are expanding recently. In this study, it is investigated if rainfall interception rate used in design of non-point pollution reduction facilities can be applied to design of LID facilities. For this purpose, EPA SWMM is constructed for part of Noksan National Industrial Complex area wherein long-term observed storm water data can be obtained and storm water interception rates for various design capacities of a bio-retention LID facility reservoirs are estimated. While sensitivity of storm water interception rate according to design specifications of bio-retention facility is not large, sensitivity of storm water interception rate according to regional rainfall characteristics is relatively large. As a result of comparing present rainfall interception rate estimation method with the one proposed in this study, the present method is highly likely to overestimate performance of the bio-retention facility. Finally, a new storm water interception rate formula for bio-retention LID facility is proposed.

  • Three purposes of this study are as follows : The first was the development of the extension method for the limited data observed in an urban drainage basin. The second was the analysis of the correlation between storm water runoff and NPS(non-point source) Pollutant discharge. The last was the calculation of the monthly and annual specific NPS loads using the established correlation. The selected model was the SWMM(Storm Water Management Model) developed by the US EPA(Environmental Protection Agency). As a result of this study, the best correlation between storm water runoff and NPS pollutants discharge was produced by the nonlinear correlation between runoff rate(mm/hr) and specific loads rate(kg/ha) for all pollutants studied : SS, COD, BOD, and TN. The best correlation through the analysis based on evently total mass was made by the linear correlation between the by the nonlinear correlation for CASE2. The NPS annual specific loads for the urban basin studed were 4,993 kg/ha/year for SS, 775 kg/ha/year for BOD, 3,094 kg/ha/year for COD, 257 kg/ha/year for TN, respectively. And the proportion of the NPS annual specific loads to the total annual specific loads were 41 % for SS, 13 % for BOD, 29 % for COD, and 21 % for TN.

  • Lake Sihwa has a very unique watershed environment, surrounded by industrial, urban and rural catchment area with different land use. The first flush phenomenon was investigated in 3 catchment area. 4TG, representing the industrial area, shows rapid discharges of highly concentrated pollutants during the early stages of a storm and it is indicating a strong first flush effect. At AS, representing the urban area, the pollutant concentration reached its peak approximately 2~3 hours after the start of storm, which is a strong first flush effect did not appear. JJB and MS represent the rural areas, the PEMC analysis results suggest that highly concentrated pollutants were discharged during the middle and latter stages of a storm, instead of early pollutant runoff due to the effects of rainwater runoff.
