To evaluate a potential wash-out effect of rainfalls, a preliminary environmental magnetic test was attempted. Measurement of isothermal remanent magnetization (IRM) and intensive microscopic observations were carried out on the solid particles extracted from the rainfalls collected for the past year (2009) in Daejeon, Korea. Dust particles collected from the rain-free (daily dust) or dustheavy days (during the Asian dust storm event) were also used as a comparison. IRMs were unanimously low for the solid particles extracted from the rainfalls, indicating an efficient wash-out effect of rainfalls as long as the magnetic concentration is concerned. Electron microscopy identified carbonbearing material, (carbon-coated) magnetite, and quartz. It is highly likely that the carbon-containing particles were produced by anthropogenic fossil fuel combustion.
The formation and development conditions of the cloud streets over the yellow sea by the Cold Surge of Siberian Anticyclone Expansion which produce the heavy snowfall events over the southwestern coast, Honam District of the Korean peninsula, has been investigated through analyses of the three dimensional snow cloud structures by using the CAPPI, RHI, VAD and VVP data of X-band Radar at Muan Weather Observatory and S-band Radar at Jindo Weather Station. The data to be used are obtained from January 04, 2003, when heavy snow storm hits on Gwangju and Honam District. The PPI Radar images show that the cloud bands distribute in perpendicular to the expansion direction of the high pressure and that the radius of cloud cells is about 5~8 km with 20~30 dBz and distance between each cell is about 10 km. And but the vertical Radar images show that the cloud street is a small scale convective type cloud within height of about 3 km where a stable layer exists. From the VVP images, the time period of the high pressure expansion, the moving direction and development stages of the system are delineated. Finally, the vertical distribution of wind direction is fairly constants, while the wind speed sheer increases with altitude to 3 km.
This study aims at suggesting an alternative to improve flood controling capacity according to the cument design criteria for the existing Soyanggang Multi-purpose Dam which was constructed 20 years ago as the largest dam in Korea. The peak inflow of the adopted probable maximum flood (PMF) at the time of construction was 13,500 $m^3$/s. However, the newly estimated peak inflow of the PMF is 18,000 $m^3$/s which is 1.34 times bigger than the original one. This is considered to be due to the accumulation of the reliable flood and storm event records after construction, and due to the increasing tendency of the local flood peaks according to the influence of world-wide weather change. The new estimation of the probable maximum precipitation (PMP) was based on the hydro-meteorological method suggested by the guideline of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). The unit hydrograph which was applied for the estimation of PMF was derived through linear programming algorithm by minimizing the sum of absolute deviations of the calculated and recorded flood hydrographs. In order to adopt the newly estimated PMF as a design flood, following four alternatives were compared : (1) allocation of more flood control space by lowering the normal high water level, (2) construction of a new spillway in addition to the existing spillway, (3) construction of a new dam which has relevant flood control storage at the upstream of the Soyanggang dam, (4) raising the existing dam crest. The preliminary evaluation of these alternatives resulted in that the second alternative is most economic and feasible. So as to stably cope with the newly estimated PMF by meeting all the current functions of the multipurpose dam, a detailed study of an additional spillway tunnel has to be followed.

Despite the potentially major influence of rainstorm patterns on the prediction of shallow landslides, this relationship has not yet received significant attention. In this study, five typical temporal rainstorm patterns with the same cumulative amount and intensity components comprising Advanced (A1 and A2), Centralized (C), and Delayed (D1 and D2) were designed based on a historical rainstorm event occurred in 2006 in Mt. Jinbu area. The patterns were incorporated as the hydrological conditions into the Transient Rainfall Infiltration and Grid-based Regional Slope-stability Model (TRIGRS), in order to assess their influences on pore pressure variation and changes in the stability of the covering soil layer in the study area. The results revealed that not only the cumulative rainfall thresholds necessary to initiate landslides, but also the rate at which the factor of safety (FS) decreases and the time required to reach the critical state, are governed by rainstorm pattern. The sooner the peak rainfall intensity occurs, the smaller the cumulative rainfall threshold, and the shorter the time until landslide occurrence. Left-skewed rainfall patterns were found to have a greater effect on landslide initiation. More specifically, among the five different patterns, the Advanced storm pattern (A1) produced the most critical state, as it resulted in the highest pore pressure across the entire area for the shortest duration; the severity of response was then followed by patterns A2, C, D1, and D2. Thus, it can be concluded that rainfall patterns have a significant effect on the cumulative rainfall threshold, the build-up of pore pressure, and the occurrence of shallow landslides, both in space and time.
High-quality and high-resolution meteorological information is essential to reduce damages due to disastrous weather phenomena such as flash flood, strong wind, and heat/cold waves. There are many meteorological observation stations operated by Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) in Seoul Metropolitan Area (SMA). Nonetheless, they are still not enough to represent small-scale weather phenomena like convective storm cells due to its poor resolution, especially over urban areas with high-rise buildings and complex land use. In this study, feasibilities to use additional pre-existing networks (e.g., operated by local government and private company) are tested by investigating the effects of network density on the gridded horizontal distribution of two meteorological variables (temperature and precipitation). Two heat wave event days and two precipitation events are chosen, respectively. And the automatic weather station (AWS) networks operated by KMA, local-government, and SKTechX in Incheon area are used. It is found that as network density increases, correlation coefficients between the interpolated values with a horizontal resolution of 350 m and observed data also become large. The range of correlation coefficients with respect to the network density shows large in nighttime rather than in daytime for temperature. While, the range does not depend on the time of day, but on the precipitation type and horizontal distribution of convection cells. This study suggests that temperature and precipitation sensors should be added at points with large horizontal inhomogeneity of land use or topography to represent the horizontal features with a resolution higher than 350 m.

Basin-scale motions in a stratified lake rely on interactions of spatially and temporally varying wind force, bathymetry, density variation, and earth's rotation. These motions provide a major driving force for vertical and horizontal mixing of inorganic and organic materials, dissolved oxygen, storm water and floating debris in stratified lakes. In Lake Tahoe, located between California and Nevada, USA, basin-scale circulations are obviously important because they are directly associated with the fate of the suspended particulate materials that degrade the clarity of the lake. A three-dimensional hydrodynamic model, ELCOM, was applied to Lake Tahoe to investigate the underlying mechanisms that determine the characteristics of basin-scale circulations. Numerical experiments were designed to examine the relative effects of various mechanisms responsible for the horizontal circulations for two different seasons, summer and winter. The unique double gyre, a cyclonic northern gyre and an anti-cyclonic southern gyre, occurred during the winter cooling season when wind stress curl, stratification, and Coriolis effect were all incorporated. The horizontal structure of the upwelling and downwelling formed due to basin-scale internal waves found to be closely related to the rotating direction of each gyre. In the summer, the spatially varying wind field and the Coriolis effect caused a dominant anti-cyclonic gyre to develop in the center of the lake. In the winter, a significant wind event excited internal waves, and a persistent (2 week long) cyclonic gyre formed near the upwelling zone. Mechanism of the persistent cyclonic gyre is explained as a geostrophic circulation ensued by balancing of the baroclinc pressure gradient (or baroclinic instability) and Coriolis effect. Topographic effect, examined by simulating a flat bathymetry with constant depth of 300m, was found to be significant during the winter cooling season but not as significant as the wind curl and baroclinic effects.

In this study, the impact of climate change on extreme drought events is investigated by comparing drought severity-area-duration curves under present and future climate. The depth-area-duration analysis for characterizing an extreme precipitation event provides a basis for analysing drought events when storm depth is replaced by an appropriate measure of drought severity. In our climate-change impact experiments, the future monthly precipitation time series is based on a KMA regional climate model which has a $27km{\times}27km$ spatial resolution, and the drought severity is computed using the standardized precipitation index. As a result, agricultural drought risk is likely to increase especially in short duration, while hydrologic drought risk will greatly increase in all durations. Such results indicate that a climate change vulnerability assessment for present water resources supply system is urgent.

In this study, the changes in morphology of Dokdo's gravel beach and its responses due to a storm event were analyzed using the aerial photos and 3D LiDAR data obtained during an ecosystem survey of the Dokdo in 2020. Dongdo Island's gravel beach, shown by aerial photo analysis, increased in area due to sedimentation after the construction of a dock, but there was no more significant changes in area after having grown to Sutdolbawi inside the dock. The changes in volume of the gravel beach were indicated based on 3D data acquired in May and November 2020. A strong typhoon that passed in September, 2002, caused erosion on the backshore and sedimentation on the foreshore and formed the berm by about 1.5 to 2 m high. The analysis showed that the sedimentation was 94.76 m3 in volume and 329 m2 in area and the erosion was 250.75 m3 in volume and 603m2 in area, which suggested that the overall change of the gravel beach was erosion. The changes in the morphology of the gravel beach on Seodo Island occurred with the seasons along with the changes in area. In addition, berms of different altitudes appeared on the southern and northern sides of the spit, which was also estimated to have formed by the seasonal current direction and wave energy.

By analyzing the observations from a number of ground- and space-based instruments, including ionosonde, magnetometers, and ACE interplanetary data, we examine the response of the ionospheric TEC over Korea during 2003 magnetic storms. We found that the variation of vertical TEC is correlated with the southward turning of the interplanetary magnetic field $B_z$. It is suggested that the electric fields produced by the dynamo process in the high-latitude region and the prompt penetration in the low- latitude region are responsible for TEC increases. During the June 16 event, dayside TEC values increase more than 15%. And the ionospheric F2-layer peak height (hmF2) was ${\sim}300km$ higher and the vertical $E{\times}B$ drift (estimated from ground-based magnetometer equatorial electrojet delta H) showed downward drift, which may be due to the ionospheric disturbance dynamo electric field produced by the large amount of energy dissipation into high-latitude regions. In contrast, during November 20 event, the nightside TEC increases may be due to the prompt penetration westward electric field. The ionospheric F2-layer peak height was below 200km and the vertical $E{\times}B$ drift showed downward drift. Also, a strong correlation is observed between enhanced vertical TEC and enhaaced interplanetary electric field. It is shown that, even though TEC increases are caused by the different processes, the electric field disturbances in the ionosphere play an important role in the variation of TEC over Korea.
In order to examine effects of sampling frequency during rainfall-runoff process from paddy field on the estimation of pollution load, EMCs of several water sampling frequencies were examined. Water quality samples were conducted by every two hours interval for each event. It was found that difference of load estimation between five times sampling and two hours consecutive sampling during rainfall-runoff showed $15.2{\sim}-15.2%$ for T-N, $20.0{\sim}-26.2%$ for T-P, $28.6{\sim}-35.7%$ for the SS, respectively. In the same way, the effects of number of sampling data on estimation of pollution load using runoff-mass load(L-Q) method were investigated. L-Q equation made of five times sampling data provided 10% differences in estimation of mass loads of T-N, T-P, and SS when compared to those by L-Q equation using entire two hours consecutive sampling data during runoff process.
