This study was carried to select the tolerance in rice varieites for ozone treatment through comparing SOD, POD and stomata resistance. In SOD Acivity, Sangnambatbyeo showed the highest activity on 1 hr after ozone treatment and after 24 hr, SOD activity was decreased. SOD activity of Hangangchalbyeo was not different in observed all times after ozone treatment. In POD activity, Hangangchalbyeo, Sangnambatbyeo and Ilpumbyeo were similar to POD activity but Baeknabyeo was the lowest activity on 1 hr after ozone treatment. Also, all varieties represnted the highest activity (above 90 %) an 24 hr after ozone treatment. In stomata resistance, Sangnambatbyeo was decreased stomata resistance on 1 hr after ozone treatment. Hangangchalbyeo, Sangnambatbyeo and Baekna were decreased stomata resistiance on 24 hr after ozone treatment except Ilpumbyeo.

This study was carried out to know pathogenicity of the pathogen isolated in several location of Korea and penetration mechanism of the Pseudocercospora vitis ($(L\acute{e}v)$.) Speg. Inoculation tests at room temperature were performed on both sides of leaves with different isolates of the fungus. The typical symptoms appeared on the abaxial leaf surface, but no symptom was observed on the adaxial leaf surface with all isolates. The average incubation period was nine days, since all symptoms appeared from 8 to 10 days after inoculation. In order to know the mechanism of invasion of P. vitis to grapevine, the behavior of penetration hyphae through stomata were compared in two cultivars having different level of resistance. In order to know the mechanism of resistance of grape vine to P.vitis, two cultivars having different level of resistance were compared by counting the numbers and measuring size of the stomata per leaf. In a susceptible cultivar Campbell Early, the number of stomata was more than that of a resistance cultivar 'Kyoho'. In a susceptible cultivar 'Campbell Early', the fungus entered readily into stomata after inoculation. However, in a resistant cultivar 'Kyoho', the fungus seemed to pass over or surrounded only the guard cells. In comparison of height of guard cells of stomata between the two cultivars, significant differences were observed by scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy. The height of guard cells of 'Campbell Early' showed a little higher than those of 'Kyoho' known to be resistant to the fungus.
In order to develop the standards for the measurement of drought resistance in mulberry trees (Morus genus) the varietal differences of drought resistance were measured for 30 mulberry varieties, and the relationships between the drought resistance and the histological and physiological characteristics of mulberry leaves were investigated. The results were summarized as follows; 1. It is reasonable to use the drought resistance ratio, expressed by D/D'*100, for the standard of drought resistance measurement for mulberry tree as a perennial tree crop. Where: D stands for growth amount(shoot length) in the plot of dry treatment, at the end of treatment. D' stands for an expected value of D which is expressed by B*C/A. Here, A is the growth amount of wet treatment plot at the beginning of treatment, B is the growth amount of dry treatment plot at the beginning of treatment, and C is the growth amount of wet treatment plot at the end of treatment. 2. The results obtained from the application of above formula showed that the varieties Cadaneo, Tahozosaeng, Yongchunchuwu, Kaeryang suban. and Kabsun were highly resistant to drought and the varieties Jukmok, Shipyung, Sobun, Kaeryangzosaeng shipmoonza and Chungagokyo were highly susceptible. 3. Among leaf tissues. the rate of inter-cellular space showed the highest relationship with drought resistance. The correlation coefficient calculated (r=0.4153) was highly significant. Other leaf tissues such as epidermis and palisade showed no significant correlations with drought resistance. 4. The size and density of stomata were correlated to drought resistance. That is: Correlation between drought resistance and size of stomata(length ${\times}$ width)......r= -0. 3253(signif. at 5%) density(No. of stomata/l$\textrm{mm}^2$......r= +0.5047(signif. at 1%)
Diurnal acid fluctuation, stomatal resistance, and solar radiation with regard to the cladode orientation were investigated in Opuntia lanceolata Haw. growing at WPeolryeong-ri, Hallim-eup, Chejudo, Korea. Diurnal changes of titratable acidity showed the typical CAM pattern in all investigated cladodes. Water tissue in the cladode had the same pattern of acid fluctuation as mesophyll tissue. Stomatal resistance was low during the night, increased rapidly to be a peak right after sunrise and decreased again thereafter. The southern side of the cladode showed higher stomatal resistance than the northern side during the day time. It suggests that the stomata of the northern side opens under diffuse radiation. The amount of solar radiation varied depending upon the cladode orientation. It is thought that C4 acids move inter and intra mesophyll tissues in the cladode through the unknown pathways. RuBP carboxyulase activity in the cladode was very high at 14:00, but was not significant at 01:00. PEP-carboxylase had high activities both at 14:00 and at 01:00. The results of this study showed the possibility that O. lanceolata Haw. had the C3, C4 and CAM photosynthetic patterns under the environmental conditions at Weolryeong-ri.
Diurnal acid fluctuations, stomatal resistance, and morphology and anatomy were investigated in leaves and stems P. oleracea L. growing under the natural environmental condition. A CAM-like pattern of acid fluctuation was exhibited not in leaves of the young purslane but in its stems. Defoliated stems showed a decreased in diurnal changes of total acidity as compared with normal stems. Excised stems stored in continuous darkness exhibited diurnal acid rhythms, and they showed light deacidifications for three days. Kranz-type arrangement was observed in leaves, but not in stems. Micrography of cross sections of stems showed cells with relatively large vaculoles and a few chloroplasts. The number of stomata was 3,275cm-2 in leaves, while the stomata could not be observed in stems. Stomatal resistance was high at night and low in daytime in leaves of the young purslane, and the range of its value was 5~40 sec.$\textrm{cm}^{-1}$. But stomatal resistance in leaves of the water-stressed plant was comparratively high in day time, and its value was 30 sec.$\textrm{cm}^{-1}$. The result of these studies showed the possibility that the stem of P.oleracea L. possesses CAM under certain stressed conditions.

A growth chamber fumigation was conducted to evaluate the ozone (O3) on the physiology of three hot pepper, Capsicum annuum L. cultivars, 'dabotab', 'buchon' and 'pochungchun'. Thirty-day old plants were exposed to O3 of 120 nl 1-1 in the chambers for 8 h d-1 for 3 days. Foliar damage due to O3 was different from the varieties, 'dabotab'was most sensitive to O3, 'pochungchun' was medium, and 'buchon' was resistant. Ozone symptom on the leaves was bifacial necorsis. Photosynthesis and stomatal conductance were decreased due to O3 treatment, but they were not much different from the variety. Decreases of net photosynthesis by O3 were 56%, 40% and 35% on 'dabotab', 'buchon' and 'pochungchun', respectively Decreases of stomatal conductance by O3 were 66%, 63%, and 50% on each varieties. Ozone closed the stomata and decrease net photosynthesis on hot peppers regardless of the variety. Light curves on the three varieties were showing similar patterns that O3 damage on net photosynthesis were started at the low levels of light with or without the visible injury, Assimilation-internal CO2 concentration curves of the three cultivars were not different due to the treatment. It means there was not significant biochemical damage Inside the leaves by O3. In conclusion, ozone closed the stomata and damaged light capturing system of the pepper leaves with or without the visible damage. Although visible damage of the leaves could be a good indicator of O3 resistance, the ecophysiological change by O3 were not proportional to the amout of visible injuries
These studies were conducted to verify the effect of the supplementary lighting by reflective film mulching and its establishment in the north side of greenhouse on the utility of light at tomato by means of investigating changes of leaf temperatures, stomatal features, transpiration rates and photosynthetic rates. Stomatal density of leaves were high in the reflective film mulching but sizes of stomata were not different. As the osmotic potential in rooting zone was low, the stomatal resistance was high, transpiration rate was low, and leaf temperature was increased by 40.62$^{\circ}C$. And also in the block of reflective film mulching photosynthetic rates were decreased hut chlorophyll contents were not different. Especially, there is an effect of controlling greenhouse whiteflies by treatment of reflective film mulching. It is thought that the reason of high quality or increasing yield at several crops by supplementary lighting, such as reflective film mulching, would be caused by influences of absorption and distribution of nutrients through high transpiration rate and photosynthesis which resulted from increase of stomata.
Crop yield is critically related to the physiological responses and disease resistance of the crop, which could be strongly affected by high temperature conditions. We observed the changes in the growth of barley under higher than ambient air-temperature conditions using a temperature gradient field chamber (TGFC) during winter and spring. Before the stem extension stage of barley growth, Cladosporium sp. spontaneously appeared in the TGFC. The severity of disease became serious under warmer temperature conditions. Further, the stomata closed as the severity of the disease increased; however, stomatal conductance at the initial stage of disease was higher than that of the normal leaves. This was likely due to the Iwanov effect, which explains that stressed plants rapidly and transiently open their stomata before longer-term closure. In this study, we tested three optical methods: soil-plant analysis development (SPAD) chlorophyll index, photochemical reflectance index (PRI), and maximum quantum yield (Fv/Fm). These rapid evaluation methods have not been used in studies focusing on disease stress, although some studies have used these methods to monitor other stresses. These three indicative parameters revealed that diseased barley exhibited lower values of these parameters than normal, and with the increase in disease severity, these values declined further. Our results will be useful in efficient monitoring and evaluation of crop diseases under future warming conditions.
Diurnal changes in leaf stomatal resistances were measured on leaf positions and both surfaces to investigate the stomatal response to irradiance in wheat, var. Chokwang and barley, var. Dongbori 1. Stomatal frequency and size were also determined to explain the control mechanism of gas exchanges in two species. The leaf diffusive resistances of two species decreased, as the sun rose, to minimum at 10 to 11 o'clock a.m. and increased gradually in the afternoon, even faster at sunset. As the adaxial irradiance increased, stomatal resistances decreased sensitively in the range of 30uEm$^{-2}$ㆍsec$^{-1}$ to 150uEm$^{-2}$ㆍsec$^{-1}$ quantum flux density. The stomatal opening of the abaxial surface began at lower irradiance and was completed earlier than the adaxial surface. The adaxial irradiances decreased in order of leaf position, flag, the 2nd, the 3rd leaf, and the stomatal resistances increased in the same order. Even under the same irradiance, the stomatal resistance of lower leaves were higher than those of upper leaves. The stomatal frequencies of lower leaves were less, but the stomatal size was greater than those of upper leaves. Consequently, the relative leaf area occupied by stomatal pores were constant among leaf positions in two species.
Pepper plants were flooded at 0, 5, 10 and 15cm at seedling stage under the condition of greenhouse. Treatment of flooding times are 6, 12, 24, 48 and 120 hours. The results obtained are summarized as follows. Plant height, number of leaves, shoot and root fresh weight were not recovered the flooding damages regardless of flooding time and depth. Pepper plant died in flooding depth of 5cm or more for over 48 hours. Plants in fallen leaves were found at more than 5cm depth and 6 hours of floodings. Photosynthesis and respiration rate decreased in the 5cm flooding depth or more for 24 hours. Chlorophyll content and root activity decreased for 12 hours or more at all the flooding depth. Also, diffusion resistance of stomata cell increased as increased flooding time and depth. Diseases occurred remarkably in proportion to the depth and hours of flooding treatment. It was not possible to control the desease by fungicide, also then was no effects of foliar spray of urea. Weight of fruit per plant not decrease by the 12 hours of 0cm and the 6 hours of 5cm flooding but decreased at deeper and longer flooding. Average weight of a fruit increased. The yield could not expected in the depth of 5cm or more for over 48 hours, There was significant positive correlation between all the investigated characteristics of growth and yield. There was, however, negative correlation between number of leaf and diffusion resistance of stomata.
