Feeding Habits of Hexagrammos otakii off the Yoesu Coast of Korea (여수 연안에서 서식하는 쥐노래미(Hexagrammos otakii)의 식성)

  • The feeding habits of Hexagrammos otakii were studied by analyzing the stomach contents of 508 specimens collected from July 2009 to December 2010 off the Yeosu coast of Korea. The total length of the H. otakii specimens ranged from 10.7 to 41.5 cm. H. otakii was found to be a bottom-feeding carnivore that mainly consumed brachyura, amphipoda, but also sonsumed cephalopoda, pisces, anomura, polychaeta, and gastropoda. It was shown through relative importance analysis that the benthic share was 58.1% for brachyura, 24.5% for amphipoda, 7.5% for caridea, and 7.3% for pisces. Brachyura was the main prey item for H. otakii, occupying 35% of the stomach contents. The proportion of brachyura and amphipoda decreased with the growth of H. otakii, and their decrease paralleled the increased consumption of pisces. The shift in feeding habits to larger prey organisms with increasing fish size seems to be one of survival strategies to maximize net energy gain.

  • Diet and feeding patterns of 10 species of gonostomatid fish in the Rockall Trough and Porcupine Seabight, northeastern Atlantic, were investigated as a part of studies analyzing the meso-and upper bathypelagic micronektonic fish communities in these two areas. Copepods were the major food organisms, composing more than 72% in both areas, and ostracods the second most abundant prey organisms (〉13%). The results of stomach content analyses reveals that most of gonostomatids, including two important species, Cyclothone braueri and C. microdon, feed continuously regardless of light cycle and a little at a time. The gonostomatids appear to be planktivores that consume small-sized prey; relative size of most preys was about one-tenth of fish length. These feeding patterns could be an adaptive characteristic of fish living in great deep water where the food items are scarcely present. In general there are no considerable inter-and intraspecific differences, not to mention regional differences, in the feeding of the gonostomatids at both stations except the large specimen of Gonostoma elongatum fed fish. Thus several coexisting species of the gonostomatid fish utilize the same resources, showing competitive relationships.

  • The review of side dishes, oereal dishes and seasonings of the banquet on the 24th year of King Kojong in Chosun Dynasty were summarized as follows: 1. Ten kinds of soups(=Tang), that is Yyolguja Tang$.$Guja Tang$.$Keumjung Tang$.$Whanja Tang$.$Jap Tang$.$Gol Tang$.$Seunggiwa Tang$.$Jeopo Tang$.$Haesam Tang$.$Yang Tang were served. The most frequently served soup among them was Yyolguja Tang. 2. Various kinds of dried meat/fish were piled up most highly among dishes. Sliced beef and minced beef among dried meats, white cud$.$yellow cud$.$flatfish$.$skate$.$shark$.$octopus$.$dried abalone$.$cuttle fish$.$dried scallop were piled up together. 3. Sliced of boiled beef/pork and gelatined knuckles were assorted. Boiled meat which was made of beef, pork, lamb, liver, stomach, brisket and plat flank of caw was chiefly used for boiled beef, hams for boiled pork, mediumsized lamb for boiled lamb. And the legs and stomach of caw, old chicken, mullet were used for gelatined knuckle. 4. Three kinds of pan-frying dishes that was stomach and liver of caw, and mullet were usually piled up, If one kind in one dish, sea cucumber and mullet were used respectively. 5. Boiled abalone was dried abalone with soaked, sliced and boiled down in soysauce. 6. Roasted dish was usually made of assorted food stuffs. Sometimes chicken an pheasant was used for roasted dish. 7. Steamed dish was like this : assorted beef, fresh abalone, sea cucumber, mullet, young pork, chicken, dried abalone. 8. Raw dish was made of intestine of caw, fresh abalone and mullet. 9. Poached egg was serving decorated with red pepper, pine-nut and green onion. 10. Seasoned green-been-jelly was served only one time. 11. Radish kimchi was served only one time. 12. Chief foods were nuddle and stuffed bun. 13. Served seasings were honey, mustard, soysauce with vinegar, salt. Review from banquet menu, 34 kinds of side dishes were served : 10 kinds of soup, dried fish/meat, boiled beef, boiled pork, gelatined knuckle, 5 kinds of panfrying, boiled-down-abalone in soysauce, 3 kinds of roast, 5 kinds of steamed, 3 kinds of raw dishes, pouched egg, green-bean-jelly, kimchi. 4 kinds of chief foods were served : nuddle, dry nuddle, 2 kinds of dumping.

Gastric anisakiasis cases in Cheju-do, Korea (고래회충유충증 107례 보고 및 어류감염 실태 조사)

  • Human anisakiasis may occur after ingestion of raw marine flesh infected with nematode larvae of Anlsi,hidae. Anisakiasis caused by the migration of the larva into the wall of stomach, small intestine and other portion has been reported in Korea. This prospective study was made of all cases referred to parasitological laboratory in Cheju-do between. Tune 1989 and June 1992. Gastric anisakiasis was confirmed if larvae invading the gastric wall were observed by gastrofiberscopy One hundred and seven cases were diagnosed, most of which were in 30-49 years old. Most of the patients complained acute epigastric pain with history of eating raw marine fish. This symptom usually occurred about 12 hours to 1 day after ingestion of infected marine fish. Edema, erosion or ulcer of the mucosa and hemorrhage from the gastric wall were observed in the involved areas. Ninety larvae removed from the stomach were identified; the larva of Anisqkis siwlex was the most prevalent species, and the Iarva of Pseudntewanoua decipien was also detected. The important species of marine fish from which the patients became infected was demonstrated as yellow corvina, sea eel, ling, cuttle fish, yellowtail and others. Five species of marine fish as a possible source of infection were examined, and Anisakis simplex larvae and Pseunotewqnoua decipirens larvae were collected from the mackerel and rock cod. This study demonstrates that anisakiasis is recognized as a public health problem in Korea.

Effect of Juvenile Fish Predation on the Zooplankton Community in the Large Regulated Nakdong River, South Korea (저수지화 성향을 띤 낙동강에서 치어 섭식이 동물플랑크톤 군집에 미치는 영향)

  • In the large regulated Nakdong River, the Predation effect of juvenile fish on the zooplankton community was evaluated by gut and stomach analyses of fish in 1999. Juvenile fish of five species showed high density from May to early June when river discharge was low and water body became stagnant. During this period, large rotifers, Asplanchna spp. and Brachionus spp. declined and the decrease of cladoceran (Moina micrura and Bosminopsis deitersi) density was also obeserved. At this time, small rotifers including Polyarthra spp. reached maximum density. Gut analysis of fish demonstrated that small-sized juvenile fish (< 15 mm in total length)preferred large rotifers as well as cladocerans, while large sized fish (> 15 mm)selected only cladocerans. On the other hand, juvenile Micropterus salmoides of which size was larger than other juvenile fish consumed not only zooplankton but also other small juvenile fish. Based on these results, the decline of large rotifers and cladocerans during early summer in the river seems to be result of predation by juvenile fish. However, the period when juvenile fish maintained their high density was as short as one month and the decreased density of cladocera rapidly recovered as soon as juvenile fish became scarce. Such a short period of juvenile fish devel-opment in the river can be attributed to the consumption of juvenile fish by the young-of-the-year cohorts as well as adults of M. salmoides. The high trophic state of the river might permit the rapid recovery of the cladoceran community. The predation impact of juvenile fish in the Nakdong River seems to be affected by the existence of piscivore as well as high trophic status.

Feeding Habits of Chub Mackerel (Scomber japonicus) in the South Sea of Korea (남해에 출현하는 고등어 (Scomber japonicus)의 식성)

  • The feeding habits of chub mackerel (Scomber japonicus) were studied based on an examination of the stomach contents of 512 specimens collected between November 2005 and October 2006 in the South Sea of Korea. The specimens ranged in fork length (FL) from 23.4-37.5 cm. Chub mackerel is a piscivore and consumes mainly Teleosts such as Engraulis japonicus. Its diet also includes amphipods, crabs, Euphausia, chaetognaths and shrimp. Smaller individuals (<26 cm FL) consume mainly crabs. The proportion of these prey items decreases with increasing fish size, and this decrease paralleles the increased consumption of fish. The prey size increases with S. japonicus size.

  • We examined the stomach contents of juvenile Lophius litulon, which were collected monthly in the coastal waters of Kori, Korea from January to December, 1996. L. litulon was a bottom feeding carnivore which mainly consumed fish, euphausiids, sagittoids, and shrimp. Its diet also included small quantities of copepods amphipods, and stomatopods. It showed distinct ontogenetic changes in feeding habits. Small individuals (1-2 cm SL) mainly preyed on sagittoids and euphausiids. However, individuals eve, 3 cm SL mainly preyed on fish and shrimp.

  • The high mortality of cultured juvenile turbot, Scophthalmus maximus occurred in Gochang on June, 2003. The diseased fish was lethargic with reduced feed intake. Grossly, these fish showed pale body, abdominal extension and exophthalmia. The dominant internal gross features of diseased fish were severely enlarged spleen, pale gills and/ or liver. Diseased fish histologically showed basophilic enlarged cells in the kidney, spleen, gill, heart, stomach, intestine, liver, pancreas and adipose tissue. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) reveled hexagonal virions in the cytoplasm of necrotic cells. The viral particles lead a central electron-dense core and an electron translucent zone, and were 136-159 nm in diameter. These results suggest that the virus belonging to the iridoviridae was responsible for the mortality of cultured juvenile turbot.

  • The feeding habits of the blackthroat seaperch Doederleinia berycoides were studied using 650 specimens collected in the Southern Sea of Korea, from January to December, 2005. The size (standard length, SL) of the specimens ranged from 6.3 to 35.2 cm. D. berycoides is a piscivore that consumes mainly teleosts such as Engraulis japonicus, Acropoma japonicum, and Myctophum nitidulum. Of the fish species Engraulis japonicus was the preferred prey. D. berycoides also eats small quantities of shrimps, amphipods, euphausiids, mysids, and crabs. D. berycoides showed ontogenetic changes in its feeding habits. Smaller individuals (5-10 cm SL) fed mainly on shrimp. The proportion of shrimp decreased with increasing fish size, and this decrease paralleled the increased consumption of fish. Fish accounted for almost all of the stomach contents of individuals larger than 15 cm SL. Cluster analysis based on the percentage dry weight (%DW) identified two size groups: group A (<15 cm SL) consumed primarily shrimp and fish; and group B (15< cm SL) preyed exclusively on fish. There was little seasonal change in the diet of D. berycoides, but shrimp constituted 41.8% of the summer diet in %W.

Behaviour Studies of Red Till Fish, Branchiostegus Japonicus to a Longline Gear for Hook Design (연승어구에 대한 옥돔의 행동과 낚시형상 설계)

  • The responses of red tile fish, Branchiostegus Japonicus to a longline gear were examined in an experimental tank using two video cameras, in order to know hooking mechanism and improve longline hook. In attraction stage, the fish swim to upstream direction slowly just above the bottom toward the baited hook. The majority of the fish then biting the bait incompletely, after the biting, the fish made a backward swimming with low intense, and the bait was usually spitting out when snood was stretched. In most case, hooking took place at the moment the fish made jerk or rush after the bait wallowed. The behaviour sequence closely related to hooking are chewing and jerking or chewing and rushing. According to the field experiments, the tested hooks of long shank show very low catching efficiency compared to the traditional hook with short shank, and the hooked position of the traditional hooks were oesophagus or stomach but the tested hooks were mouth in the most cases. For catching efficiency, desirable hook shape were inferenced inner-curved point and short shank because its ease to swallow. The shape and demensions of a porposed hook were determined in consideration of mechanized gear handling and hooking performance.
