Ice accretion on the aircraft components, such as wings, fuselage, and empennage, can occur when the aircraft encounters a cloud zone with high humidity and low temperature. The prevention of ice accretion is important because it causes a decrease in the aerodynamic performance and flight stability, thus leading to fatal safety problems. In this study, a shape design optimization of a multi-element airfoil is performed to minimize the amount of ice accretion on the high-lift device including leading-edge slat, main element, and trailing-edge flap. The design optimization framework proposed in this paper consists of four major parts: air flow, droplet impingement and ice accretion simulations and gradient-free optimization algorithm. Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) simulation is used to predict the aerodynamic performance and flow field around the multi-element airfoil at the angle of attack 8°. Droplet impingement and ice accretion simulations are conducted using the multi-physics computational analysis tool. The objective function is to minimize the total mass of ice accretion and the design variables are the deflection angle, gap, and overhang of the flap and slat. Kriging surrogate model is used to construct the response surface, providing rapid approximations of time-consuming function evaluation, and genetic algorithm is employed to find the optimal solution. As a result of optimization, the total mass of ice accretion on the optimized multielement airfoil is reduced by about 8% compared to the baseline configuration.

In the present study, the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations, together with the equations of the $k-{\varepsilon}$ model of turbulence, were solved numerically in a general body-fitted coordinate system for three-dimensional turbulent flows around the six basic shapes of the magnetically levitated train(MAGLEV). The numerical computations were conducted on the MAGLEV model configurations to provide information on shapes of this type very near the elevated track at a constant Reynolds number of $1.48{\times}10^{6}$ based on the body length. The coordinate system was generated by numerically solving a set of Poisson equations. The convective transport equations were discretized using the finite-analytic scheme which employed analytic solutions of the locally-linearized equations. A time marching algorithm was employed to enable future extensions to be made to handle unsteady and fully-elliptic problems. The pressure-velocity coupling was treated with the SIMPLER-algorithm. Of particular interests were wall effect by the elevated track on the aerodynamic forces and flow characteristics of the six models calculated. The results indicated that the half-circle configuration with extended sides and with smooth curvature of sides was desirable because of the low aerodynamic forces and pitching moment. And it was found that the separation bubble was occured at wake region in near the elevated track.
The lattice Boltzman method (LBM) and the finite difference-based lattice Boltzmann method (FDLBM) are quite recent approaches for simulating fluid flow, which have been proven as valid and efficient tools in a variety of complex flow problems. They are considered attractive alternatives to conventional finite-difference schemes because they recover the Navier-Stokes equations and are computationally more stable, and easily parallelizable. However, most models of the LBM or FDLBM are for incompressible fluids because of the simplicity of the structure of the model. Although some models for compressible thermal fluids have been introduced, these models are for monatomic gases, and suffer from the instability in calculations. A lattice BGK model based on a finite difference scheme with an internal degree of freedom is employed and it is shown that a diatomic gas such as air is successfully simulated. In this research we present a 2-dimensional edge tone to predict the frequency characteristics of discrete oscillations of a jet-edge feedback cycle by the FDLBM in which any specific heat ratio $\gamma$ can be chosen freely. The jet is chosen long enough in order to guarantee the parabolic velocity profile of a jet at the outlet, and the edge is of an angle of $\alpha$=23$^{o}$. At a stand-off distance w, the edge is inserted along the centerline of the jet, and a sinuous instability wave with real frequency is assumed to be created in the vicinity of the nozzle exit and to propagate towards the downstream. We have succeeded in capturing very small pressure fluctuations resulting from periodic oscillation of the jet around the edge.
The guideline of selecting the number of snapshot dataset, $N_s$ in proper orthogonal decomposition(POD) was presented via the analysis of Eigen values based on the singular value decomposition(SVD). In POD, snapshot datasets from the solutions of Euler or Navier-Stokes equations are utilized to SVD and a reduced order model(ROM) is constructed as the combination of Eigen vectors. The ROM is subsequently applied to reconstruct the flowfield data with new set of flow conditions, thereby enhancing the computational efficiency. The overall computational efficiency and accuracy of POD is dependent on the number of snapshot dataset; however, there is no reliable guideline of determining $N_s$. In order to resolve this problem, the order of maximum to minimum Eigen value ratio, O(R) from SVD was analyzed and presented for the decision of $N_s$; in case of steady flow, $N_s$ should be determined to make O(R) be $10^9$. For unsteady flow, $N_s$ should be increased to make O(R) be $10^{11\sim12}$. This strategy of selecting the snapshot dataset was applied to two dimensional NACA0012 airfoil and vortex flow problems including steady and unsteady cases and the numerical accuracies according to $N_s$ and O(R) were discussed.

In the FSI (Fluid-Structure Interaction) problems, two different governing equations are to be solved together. One is fur the fluid and the other for the structure. Furthermore, a kinematic constraint should be imposed along the boundary between the fluid and the structure. We use the combined formulation, which incorporates both the fluid and structure equations of motion into a single coupled variational equation so that it is not necessary to calculate the fluid force on the surface of structure explicitly when solving the equations of motion of the structure. A two-dimensional channel flow divided by a Bernoulli-Euler beam is considered and the dynamic response of the beam under the influence of channel flow is studied. The Navier-Stokes equations are solved using a P2P1 Galerkin finite element method with ALE (Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian) algorithm. The internal structural damping effect is not considered in this study and numerical results are compared with a previous work fer steady case. In addition to the Reynolds number, two non-dimensional parameters, which govern this fluid-structure system, are proposed. It is found that the larger the dynamic viscosity and density of the fluid are, the larger the damping of the beam is. Also, the added mass is found to be linearly proportional to the density of the fluid.
Uniform semiclassical (WKB) solutions are obtained for nonseparable systems without using a close coupling formalism and are given explicitly in terms of well known analytic functions for various physically interesting and realistic cases. They do not become singular at turning points or surfaces and when taken in their asymptotic forms, they reduce to the usual WKB solutions that could be obtained if the Stokes phenomenon was properly taken care of for solutions. In obtaining such uniform solutions, the Schroedinger equations for nonseparable systems are suitably "renormalized" to solvable "normal" forms through certain transformations. Ehrenfest's adiabatic principle plays an important guiding role for obtaining such "renormalized" uniform solutions for nonseparable systems. The eigenvalues of the Hamiltonian can be calculated from the extended Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization rules when appropriate classical trajectories are obtained. An application is made to many-electron systems and for one of the simplest examples to show the utility of the method the approximate wavefunction is calculated of the ground state helium atom.
Although a rubber isolation cushion can reduce the dynamic response of a structure itself, it has little influence on the height of a sloshing wave and even may induce magnification action. Vertical baffles are set into a base-isolated Concrete Rectangular Liquid Storage Structure (CRLSS), and baffles are opened as holes to increase the energy dissipation of the damping. Problems of liquid nonlinear motion caused by baffles are described using the Navier-Stokes equation, and the space model of CRLSS is established considering the Fluid-Solid Interaction (FSI) based on the Finite Element Method (FEM). The dynamic response of an isolated CRLSS with various baffles under an earthquake is analyzed, and the results are compared. The results show that when the baffle number is certain, the greater the number of holes in baffles, the worse the damping effects; when a single baffle with holes is set in juxtaposition and double baffles with holes are formed, although some of the dynamic response will slightly increase, the wallboard strain and the height of the sloshing wave evidently decrease. A configuration with fewer holes in the baffles and a greater number of baffles is more helpful to prevent the occurrence of two failure modes: wallboard leakage and excessive sloshing height.

This study deals with the design and implementation results for a high-capacity vol-oxidizer that can convert Uranium Dioxide pellets to $U_3O_8$ powder for up to several tens of kg HM/batch. We developed two versions of the $1^{st}$ vol-oxidizer and the $2^{nd}$ vol-oxidizer. Through an experiment with the $1^{st}$ vol-oxidizer, we deduced some problems concerning the design considerations such as the recovery rate of $U_3O_8$, the oxidation time of the Uranium Dioxide pellets, the exothermic reaction, and the powder dispersion. From the analyses of the drawbacks of the $1^{st}$ vol-oxidizer, we devised some novel items such as a folding type mesh, vibrators, and mixing blades. Also, we used the Stokes and Density ratio Eq. to determine the most reasonable flux for preventing a powder dispersion. Compared with the results of the $1^{st}$ vol-oxidizer, we showed that both the permeability of the $U_3O_8$ powders and the oxidation rate of the Uranium Dioxide pellets of the $2^{nd}$ vol-oxidizer were remarkably increased, and the temperature of the reactor was controlled well in spite of an exothermic reaction. Also, the powder was not entirely dispersed through the outlet of the voloxidizer. The experimental results of this work can help in the design of a novel and efficient vol-oxidizer with a higher capacity.
In this study, a nonlinear wave simulation code is developed using a higher-order spectral (HOS) method. The HOS method is very efficient because it can determine the solution of the boundary value problem using fast Fourier transform (FFT) without matrix operation. Based on the HOS order, the vertical velocity of the free surface boundary was estimated and applied to the nonlinear free surface boundary condition. Time integration was carried out using the fourth order Runge-Kutta method, which is known to be stable for nonlinear free-surface problems. Numerical stability against the aliasing effect was guaranteed by using the zero-padding method. In addition to simulating the initial wave field distribution, a nonlinear adjusted region for wave generation and a damping region for wave absorption were introduced for wave generation simulation. To validate the developed simulation code, the adjusted simulation was carried out and its results were compared to the eighth order Stokes theory. Long-time simulations were carried out on the irregular wave field distribution, and nonlinear wave propagation characteristics were observed from the results of the simulations. Nonlinear adjusted and damping regions were introduced to implement a numerical wave tank that successfully generated nonlinear regular waves. According to the variation in the mean wave steepness, irregular wave simulations were carried out in the numerical wave tank. The simulation results indicated an increase in the nonlinear interaction between the wave components, which was numerically verified as the mean wave steepness. The results of this study demonstrate that the HOS method is an accurate and efficient method for predicting the nonlinear interaction between waves, which increases with wave steepness.
As a valid numerical method to obtain a high-resolution result of a flow field, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) have been widely used to study coolant flow and heat transfer characteristics in fuel rod bundles. However, the time-consuming, iterative calculation of Navier-Stokes equations makes CFD unsuitable for the scenarios that require efficient simulation such as sensitivity analysis and uncertainty quantification. To solve this problem, a reduced-order model (ROM) based on proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) and machine learning (ML) is proposed to simulate the flow field efficiently. Firstly, a validated CFD model to output the flow field data set of the rod bundle is established. Secondly, based on the POD method, the modes and corresponding coefficients of the flow field were extracted. Then, an deep feed-forward neural network, due to its efficiency in approximating arbitrary functions and its ability to handle high-dimensional and strong nonlinear problems, is selected to build a model that maps the non-linear relationship between the mode coefficients and the boundary conditions. A trained surrogate model for modes coefficients prediction is obtained after a certain number of training iterations. Finally, the flow field is reconstructed by combining the product of the POD basis and coefficients. Based on the test dataset, an evaluation of the ROM is carried out. The evaluation results show that the proposed POD-ROM accurately describe the flow status of the fluid field in rod bundles with high resolution in only a few milliseconds.
