  • Although the measurement of oil globule size distribution is necessary to detect the process of demulsification, the reasonable methodology for its measurement has not been suggested because the solution of soymilk contains insoluble soybean particle and the protein to interfere with the detection of oil globule or oil content. The oil globule size distribution was measured by the homogeneous suspension and cumulative method under gravitational force or centrifugal force, which were modified with Stokes' low. The geometric mean diameter of oil globules in this soymilk was $033{\mu}m\;and\;031{\mu}m$ under gravitational method and centrifugal method, respectively. The differences of oil globule size distribution in the solutions emulsified by different pressures were detected by this method. The mean diameter of the solutions treated at higher pressure was shifted to smaller size and the distribution pattern of the solutions at higher pressure became more compact around the mean diameter.

  • This paper considers the influence of floc on the sedimentation rate for the cohesive material. The effects of floc density and size changes were also taking into consideration during the experiment. The settling velocity of a discrete floc was measured in a quiescent water column. Floc diameter and density were investigated using a modified Stokes equation with some constants such as water density, viscosity, material density and the floc fractal dimension $n_f$ obtained from the relationship between the floc diameter and the floc settling. The floc diameter of quartz and alumina increased at increasing initial concentrations. The floc size of quartz with increasing NaCl concentration varied between approximately 0.8 um to $10{\mu}m$. Floc density decreased as floc size increased. The floc settling velocity and the floc diameter have a straight line relationship on a logarithm. The floc fractal dimension nf was 2.65 with increasing of initial concentration and 2.93 with increasing of NaCl. The exponent n to predict the settling velocity was proposed and varied from 1 to 1.93.

  • Laminal natural convection heat transfer in the annulus between isothermal horizontal non-circular cylinders is studied by solving the Navier-Stokes and energy equation using an elliptic numerical procedure. Results are obtained to determine the effects of the diameter ratio($D_o/D_i$) and Rayleigh number on heat transfer. The diameter ratio is varied from 1.5 to 13.0 at Pr=0.7, H/L=1.5 and $10^3{\leqslant}Ra_L{\leqslant}4{\times}10^4$. It is found that the diameter ratio causes a more significant on the local heat transfer coefficient of lower semi-circular cylinder and plate than upper semi-circular cylinder. The mean Nusselt number increases as the diameter ratio and Rayleigh number increase, and is higher than that of the circular annulus with a same wetted perimeter.

  • A numerical analysis of the pulse-jet cleaning characteristics in a porous ceramic candle filter system was performed. To obtain the detailed velocity and pressure distribution during the cleaning process in a porous filter system, the axi-symmetric compressible Navier-Stokes equations including energy conservation equation were solved by using the FLUENT code which adopts FVM (Finite Volume Method). The effects of pulse cleaning nozzle diameter, nozzle tip position, permeability of a porous ceramic candle filter, diffuser throat diameter, and cleaning pressure on the cleaning flow characteristics were investigated extensively.

  • This study presents a numerical procedure to optimize the shape of dimple surface to enhance turbulent heat transfer in a rectangular channel. The response surface based optimization method is used as an optimization technique with Reynolds-averaged Wavier-Stokes analysis of fluid flow and heat transfer with shear stress transport (SST) turbulence model. The dimple depth-to-dimple print diameter ratio, channel height-to-dimple print diameter ratio, and dimple print diameter-to-pitch ratio are chosen as design variables. The objective function is defined as a linear combination of heat transfer related term and friction loss related term with a weighting factor. full factorial method is used to determine the training points as a mean of design of experiment. The optimum shape shows remarkable performance in comparison with a reference shape.

The RBNN method is used as an optimization technique with Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes analysis of fluid flow and heat transfer with shear stress transport (SST) turbulence model. • The present study addresses a computational work to investigate the influence of a turbulent wake flow on the pressure recovery of a subsonic diffuser. The turbulent wake is generated by a cylinder with a small diameter, which is installed at the inlet of a 2-dimensional diffuser. Computation are applied to three-dimensional steady Navier-Stokes equations. The fully implicit finite volume scheme is used to discretize the governing equations. The computational results are qualitatively well compared to the experimental results. The results show that the pressure recovery of the subsonic diffuser is dependent on the diameter and location of cylinder. It is found that a certain diameter and location of the cylinder to generate the turbulent wake give a better pressure recovery, compared with no cylinder flow.

  • Particle motion through a disk type critical orifice placed in a 3.0cm diameter chamber has been studied numerically. In the simulation, the velocity field is solved using Pantankar's SIMPLER algorithm for the compressible flow and convergence of the computation is confirmed if the mass source at each control volume is smaller than $10^{-7}$. The particle motion in the flow field is solved in Lagrangian method. The particle trajectories showed that the particles injected away from the center line are expanded rapidly. At lower pressures, this expansion phenomena are more dominant. At lower pressures, the clear difference in particle and air speed is showed all the way down to the exit plan. It was found that particles with Stokes number of ca.2.5 tend to focus close to the center line very well except the particles travelling near the wall. However, particles with Stokes number greater than ca.2.5 show a tendency to cross the center line.
