  • It is necessary to develop an efficient optimization technique to perform optimum designs which have given design spaces, discrete design values and several design goals. As optimization techniques, direct search method and stochastic search method are widely used in designing of ship structures. The merit of the direct search method is to search the optimum points rapidly by considering the search direction, step size and convergence limit. And the merit of the stochastic search method is to obtain the global optimum points well by spreading points randomly entire the design spaces. In this paper, Pareto Strategy (PS) multi-objective function method is developed by considering the search direction based on Pareto optimal points, the step size, the convergence limit and the random number generation. The success points between just before and current Pareto optimal points are considered. PS method can also apply to the single objective function problems, and can consider the discrete design variables such as plate thickness, longitudinal space, web height and web space. The optimum design results are compared with existing Random Search (RS) multi-objective function method and Evolutionary Strategy (ES) multi-objective function method by performing the optimum designs of double bottom structure and double hull tanker which have discrete design values. Its superiority and effectiveness are shown by comparing the optimum results with those of RS method and ES method.

  • The first-order plus dead time(FOPDT) and second-order plus dead time(SOPDT), which describes a linear monotonic process quite well in most chemical and industrial processes and is often sufficient for PID and IMC controller tuning. This paper presents an application of heuristic harmony search(HS) optimization algorithm to the identification of linear continuous time-delay systems from step response. This recently developed HS algorithm is conceptualized using the musical process of searching for a perfect state of harmony. It uses a stochastic random search instead of a gradient search so that derivative information is unnecessary. The effectiveness of the proposed identification method has been demonstrated through a number of simulation examples.

  • The purpose of this paper is to review global stochastic optimization algorithms(GSOA) in case binary response experimentation is used and to compare the performances of them. GSOAs utilise estimator of probability of success $\^p$ instead of population probability of success p, since p is unknown and only known by its estimator which has stochastic characteristics. Hill climbing algorithm algorithm, simple random search, random search with random restart, random optimization, simulated annealing and particle swarm algorithm as a population based algorithm are considered as global stochastic optimization algorithms. For the purpose of comparing the algorithms, two types of test functions(one is simple uni-modal the other is complex multi-modal) are proposed and Monte Carlo simulation study is done to measure the performances of the algorithms. All algorithms show similar performances for simple test function. Less greedy algorithms such as Random optimization with Random Restart and Simulated Annealing, Particle Swarm Optimization(PSO) based on population show much better performances for complex multi-modal function.

  • Many gradient-based mathematical methods have been developed and are in use for structural size optimization problems, in which the cross-sectional areas or sizing variables are usually assumed to be continuous. In most practical structural engineering design problems, however, the design variables are discrete. The main objective of this paper is to propose an efficient optimization method for structures with discrete-sized variables based on the harmony search (HS) meta-heuristic algorithm that is derived using penalty function. The recently developed HS algorithm was conceptualized using the musical process of searching for a perfect state of harmony. It uses a stochastic random search instead of a gradient search so that derivative information is unnecessary. In this paper, a discrete search strategy using the HS algorithm with a static penalty function is presented in detail and its applicability using several standard truss examples is discussed. The numerical results reveal that the HS algorithm with the static penalty function proposed in this study is a powerful search and design optimization technique for structures with discrete-sized members.

  • This paper presents a new method to find a optimal solution for stochastic system. This method uses Genetic Algorithm(GA) and simulation. GA is used to search for new alternative and simulation is used to evaluate alternative. The stochastic system has one or more random variables as inputs. Random inputs lead to random outputs. Since the outputs are random, they can be considered only as estimates of the true characteristics of they system. These estimates could greatly differ from the corresponding real characteristics for the system. We need multiple replications to get reliable information on the system. And we have to analyze output data to get a optimal solution. It requires too much computation to be practical. We address the problem of reducing computation. The procedure on this paper use GA character, an iterative process, to reduce the number of replications. The same chromosomes could exit in post and present generation. Computation can be reduced by using the information of the same chromosomes which exist in post and present current generation.

  • Electric utilities has been considered the necessity to introduce AM(asset management) of electric power facilities in order to reduce maintenance cost of existing facilities and to maximize profit. In order to make decisions in terms of repairs and replacements for power transformers, not only measuring by counting parts and labor costs, but comprehensive comparison including reliability and cost is needed. Therefore, this study is modeling input cost for power transformer during its entire life and also the life cycle cost (LCC) technique is applied. In particular, this paper presents an application of heuristic harmony search(HS) optimization algorithm to the convergence and the validity of economic life assessment of power transformer from LCC technique. This recently developed HS algorithm is conceptualized using the musical process of searching for a perfect state of harmony. It uses a stochastic random search instead of a gradient search so that derivative information is unnecessary. The effectiveness of the proposed identification method has been demonstrated through an economic life assessment simulation of power transformer using HS optimization algorithm.

  • We propose a quantized gradient search algorithm that can achieve global optimization by monotonically reducing the quantization step with respect to time when quantization is composed of integer or fixed-point fractional values applied to an optimization algorithm. According to the white noise hypothesis states, a quantization step is sufficiently small and the quantization is well defined, the round-off error caused by quantization can be regarded as a random variable with identically independent distribution. Thus, we rewrite the searching equation based on a gradient descent as a stochastic differential equation and obtain the monotonically decreasing rate of the quantization step, enabling the global optimization by stochastic analysis for deriving an objective function. Consequently, when the search equation is quantized by a monotonically decreasing quantization step, which suitably reduces the round-off error, we can derive the searching algorithm evolving from an optimization algorithm. Numerical simulations indicate that due to the property of quantization-based global optimization, the proposed algorithm shows better optimization performance on a search space to each iteration than the conventional algorithm with a higher success rate and fewer iterations.

  • This paper presents a hybrid method to compute the solutions of an optimization Problem. The present hybrid algorithm is the synthesis of an artificial life algorithm and the random tabu search method. The artificial life algorithm has the most important feature called emergence. The emergence is the result of dynamic interaction among the individuals consisting of the system and is not found in an individual. The conventional artificial life algorithm for optimization is a stochastic searching algorithm using the feature of artificial life. Emergent colonies appear at the optimum locations in an artificial ecology. And the locations are the optimum solutions. We combined the feature of random-tabu search method with the conventional algorithm. The feature of random-tabu search method is to divide any given region into sub-regions. The enhanced artificial life algorithm (EALA) not only converge faster than the conventional artificial life algorithm, but also gives a more accurate solution. In addition, this algorithm can find all global optimum solutions. The enhanced artificial life algorithm is applied to the optimum design of high-speed, short journal bearings and its usefulness is verified through an optimization problem.
