The nonlinear response statistics of an spring-pendulum system with internal resonance under narrow band random excitation is investigated analytically- The center frequency of the filtered excitation is selected to be close to natural frequency of directly excited spring mode. The Fokker-Planck equations is used to generate a general first-order differential equation in the dynamic moment of response coordinates. By means of the Gaussian closure method the dynamic moment equations for the random responses of the system are reduced to a system of autonomous ordinary differential equations. The nonlinear phenomena, such as jump and multiple solutions, under narrow band random excitation were found by Gaussian closure method.

The manufacturing environment is rife with nonlinear processes. In this context, an intelligent production controller should be able to predict the dynamic behavior of various subsystems as they react to transient environmental conditions, the varying internal condition of the manufacturing plant, and the changing demands of the production schedule. This level of adaptive capability may be achieved through a coherent methodology for a learning coordinator to predict nonlinear and stochastic processes. The system is to serve as a real time, online supervisor for routine activities as well as exceptional conditions such as damage, failure, or other anomalies. The complexity inherent in a learning coordinator can be managed by a modular architecture incorporating case based reasoning. In the interest of concreteness, the concepts are presented through a case study involving a knowledge based robotic system.

Long-span cable-stayed bridges exhibit some features which are more critical than typical long span bridges such as geometric and aerodynamic nonlinearities, higher probability of the presence of multiple vehicles on the bridge, and more significant influence of wind loads acting on the ultra high pylon and super long cables. A three-dimensional nonlinear fully-coupled analytical model is developed in this study to improve the dynamic performance prediction of long cable-stayed bridges under combined traffic and wind loads. The modified spectral representation method is introduced to simulate the fluctuating wind field of all the components of the whole bridge simultaneously with high accuracy and efficiency. Then, the aerostatic and aerodynamic wind forces acting on the whole bridge including the bridge deck, pylon, cables and even piers are all derived. The cellular automation method is applied to simulate the stochastic traffic flow which can reflect the real traffic properties on the long span bridge such as lane changing, acceleration, or deceleration. The dynamic interaction between vehicles and the bridge depends on both the geometrical and mechanical relationships between the wheels of vehicles and the contact points on the bridge deck. Nonlinear properties such as geometric nonlinearity and aerodynamic nonlinearity are fully considered. The equations of motion of the coupled wind-traffic-bridge system are derived and solved with a nonlinear separate iteration method which can considerably improve the calculation efficiency. A long cable-stayed bridge, Sutong Bridge across the Yangze River in China, is selected as a numerical example to demonstrate the dynamic interaction of the coupled system. The influences of the whole bridge wind field as well as the geometric and aerodynamic nonlinearities on the responses of the wind-traffic-bridge system are discussed.
This paper investigates the impact of the forecast error on performance of a reservoir system for hydropower production. Forecast error is measured as th Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) and parametrically varied within a Generalized Maintenance Of Variance Extension (GMOVE) procedure. A set of transition probabilities are calculated as a function of the RMSE of the GMOVE procedure and then incorporated into a Bayesian Stochastic Dynamic Programming model which derives monthly operating policies and assesses their performance. As a case study, the proposed methodology is applied to the Skagit Hydropower System (SHS) in Washington state. The results show that the system performance is a nonlinear function of RMSE and therefor suggested that continued improvements in the current forecast accuracy correspond to gradually greater increase in performance of the SHS.

Dynamic characteristics are investigated when a nonlinear system showing periodic and chaotic responses under harmonic excitation is exposed to random perturbation. About two well potential problem, probability of homoclinic bifurcation is estimated using stochastic generalized Meinikov process and quantitive characteristics are investigated by calculation of Lyapunov exponent. Critical excitaion is calculated by various assumptions about Gaussian Melnikov process. To verify the phenomenon graphically Fokker-Planck equation is solved numerically and the original nonlinear equation is numerically simulated. Numerical solution of Fokker-Planck equation is calculated on Poincare section and noise induced chaos is studied by solving the eigenvalue problem of discretized probability density function.

Classical linear models have been generally used to analyze and forecast hydrologic time series. However, there is growing evidence of nonlinear structure in natural phenomena and hydrologic time series associated with their patterns and fluctuations. Therefore, the classical linear techniques for time series analysis and forecasting may not be appropriate for nonlinear processes. In recent, the BDS (Brock-Dechert-Scheinkman) statistic instead of conventional techniques has been used for detecting nonlinearity of time series. The BDS statistic was derived from the statistical properties of the correlation integral which is used to analyze chaotic system and has been effectively used for distinguishing nonlinear structure in dynamic system from random structures. DVS (Deterministic Versus Stochastic) algorithm has been used for detecting chaos and stochastic systems and for forecasting of chaotic system. This study showed the DVS algorithm can be also used for detecting nonlinearity of the time series. In this study, the stochastic and hydrologic time series are analyzed to detect their nonlinearity. The linear and nonlinear stochastic time series generated from ARMA and TAR (Threshold Auto Regressive) models, a daily streamflow at St. Johns river near Cocoa, Florida, USA and Great Salt Lake Volume (GSL) data, Utah, USA are analyzed, daily inflow series of Soyang dam and the results are compared. The results showed the BDS statistic is a powerful tool for distinguishing between linearity and nonlinearity of the time series and DVS plot can be also effectively used for distinguishing the nonlinearity of the time series.

The nonlinear modal interaction of an autoparametric system under a broadband random excitation is investigated. The specific system examined is an autoparametric vibration absorber with internal resonance, which is typical of many common structural configurations. By means of Gaussian closure scheme the dynamic moment equations explaining the random responses of the system are reduced to a system of autonomous ordinary differential equations of the first and second moments. In view of equilibrium solutions of this system and their stability we examine the system responses. We could not find the destabilizing effect of damping, which was reported in References (18) and (20). The saturation phenomenon, which is well known in deterministic nonlinear system, did not take place lot this system subject to broadband random excitation.
A method for the dynamical analysis of FE discretized uncertain linear and nonlinear structures is presented. This method is based on the moment equation approach, for which the differential equations governing the response first and second-order statistical moments must be solved. It is shown that they require the cross-moments between the response and the random variables characterizing the structural uncertainties, whose governing equations determine an infinite hierarchy. As a consequence, a closure scheme must be applied even if the structure is linear. In this sense the proposed approach is approximated even for the linear system. For nonlinear systems the closure schemes are also necessary in order to treat the nonlinearities. The complete set of equations obtained by this procedure is shown to be linear if the structure is linear. The application of this procedure to some simple examples has shown its high level of accuracy, if compared with other classical approaches, such as the perturbation method, even for low levels of closures.
Within the context of Structural Health Monitoring (SHM), it is often the case that structural systems are described by uncertainty, both with respect to their parameters and the characteristics of the input loads. For the purposes of system identification, efficient modeling procedures are of the essence for a fast and reliable computation of structural response while taking these uncertainties into account. In this work, a reduced order metamodeling framework is introduced for the challenging case of nonlinear structural systems subjected to earthquake excitation. The introduced metamodeling method is based on Nonlinear AutoRegressive models with eXogenous input (NARX), able to describe nonlinear dynamics, which are moreover characterized by random parameters utilized for the description of the uncertainty propagation. These random parameters, which include characteristics of the input excitation, are expanded onto a suitably defined finite-dimensional Polynomial Chaos (PC) basis and thus the resulting representation is fully described through a small number of deterministic coefficients of projection. The effectiveness of the proposed PC-NARX method is illustrated through its implementation on the metamodeling of a five-storey shear frame model paradigm for response in the region of plasticity, i.e., outside the commonly addressed linear elastic region. The added contribution of the introduced scheme is the ability of the proposed methodology to incorporate uncertainty into the simulation. The results demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed methodology for accurate prediction and simulation of the numerical model dynamics with a vast reduction of the required computational toll.

The response statistics of a hinged-clamped beam under broad-band random excitation is investigated. The random excitation is applied at the nodal point of the second mode. By using Galerkin's method the governing equation is reduced to a system of nonautonomous nonlinear ordinary differential equations. A method based upon the Markov vector approach is used to generate a general first-order differential equation in the dynamic moment of response coordinates. By means of the Gaussian and non-Gaussian closure methods the dynamic moment equations for the random responses of the system are reduced to a system of autonomous ordinary differential equations. The case of two mode interaction is considered in order to compare it with the case of three mode interaction. The analytical results for two and three mode interactions are also compared with results obtained by Monte Carlo simulation.
